Chapter 26 - not in the best shape

sitting in a carriage that was mainly transporting hay, everyone only had a little bit of room in the back to squeeze in.

"Sorry for the inconvenience" the grizzled man said, his tone changing entirely as he surveyed the golden coin. "I didn't plan for anyone to come back there"

"It's quite alright" Andrew said sitting on the floor of the carriage. Next to him was Damian, who was sitting across from Chase, who was obviously next to Donnie. "I'll be comfy enough" he continued.

As the carriage began moving, the sound of hooves clacking onto the floor becoming background noise, Chase was in thought. 'it's only been a few weeks, the greater part of a month starting today, yet I've destroyed many' he began wondering if anyone else here just thought it was normal.

"Who knows what kind of world I'm in? Maybe it is" Chase said, looking down at the floor. A "what are you talking about?" From Damian

Made him realize he was thinking out loud.

"Did you eat one of those weird mushrooms? Cause you might be in the world of the dead soon enough" Donnie said, looking at him with a hint of worry.

"I'm fine" Chase said, holding his hands up.

"But I just gotta know. What happened that night, when did something like that become something you can just brush off?"

A quiet overtook the group. It was clear a lot of unwanted memories rose to the surface.

Donnie was the only one without his face covered, he turned to chase with a deadpan expression. He looked as if his mind was in another place.

"If you still have a shred of normality and goodness in in your heart, I don't think it's possible. I know for a fact I was stamping out evil that night, but that wasn't always the case." Donnie replied.

just from the look, one could tell that he was more of an assassin. Chase could guess that he had done something unsavory for money, but he wasn't digging any deeper.

"I'll put a pause on this" Chase hoped to end the awkwardness, or at least focus on the mission at hand.

——

An hour later, they were at the destination.

Getting out Andrew thanked the driver "have a good evening sir." "You as well" the man said, nodding his head, before he tugged at the reigns and his horses began moving again.

"Big tipper how much money do you have anyway?" Donnie interrogated. "I could buy you a new suit and my money would not be affected"

everyone looked at him funnily after that.

"Have i ever told you how much I love being your bestest friend?" Chase said, putting his hand on Andrew's shoulder.

"Shaking his hand off, Andrew pointed, "you're gonna hate actually working for your money" Andrew said, causing Chase to slump his shoulders. They began walking towards a village with not nearly as much protection, wealth a power as the one they recently came to.

they're were fences and farm animals, small houses, it looked like a normal rural village. They're seemed to be a house on top of a small hill. Going into the village, they noticed most people stayed in their homes.

A hill was on the far left side of the village, and on top of it lie a house, bigger, better looking then the others, actually having stone steps that were somewhat maintained.

After coming to terms with not being able to mooch off of his friend, Chase sighed, staring at it."Lets figure out what where up against exactly"

Walking past the houses made up of straw, and clay, They continued upwards, walking up said stairs. Getting to the door, they saw a nice wooden door, with grooves on in resembling the same cross used by the holy church.

Everyone jumped a little. Only having bad memories with the holy church tended to do that to people. "They can't even see our faces" Chase said, realizing he was worried for nothing.

"Just let me do the talking" Donnie said, walking up the the door, lightly tapping it twice.

*knock knock*

While they waiting for the door to be opened,

Damian felt in a gambling mood.

"whadaya think the home owner looks like?

My bets on a fat old guy" "what if he's just a young man whose just got in?" Andrew said in reply.

"When did you get gambling money?" Chase asked, looking to his right. Just then the door swung open, revealing a man with brown hair and normal medieval pair of a brown shirt and yellow pants, then being way nicer than normal wasn't a surprise to anyone.

"hello strangers. Are you the people my grandfather is employing?" He said showing an odd expression. Everyone was in something to cover their faces at least slightly, 1 had a cloak, one had a helmet, the other wore a mask and yet he was the most offput about the man who wasn't hiding anything at all.

"Both" Damian said shrugging his shoulders.

"Both works" Andrew nodded "let's see if he's fat"

The man at the door was confused. "Are you sure you've come to the right house?"
