Chapter 5 - The Game

"Well, that was embarrassing," I muttered, collapsing onto the enormous bed which felt like it had been torn from the sky itself. Good thing I was able to make a transaction directly from my game account to the hotel. If not... "I don't even want to think about it," I laughed at the scenarios that popped into my mind. "Hah," I heaved in relief, then sent a sweeping gaze once more around the luxury that would soon become part of my daily life. "This is the life," I smiled.

The room was so huge that three of my old apartments would probably fit right in, and there would still be enough space to rent out. Okay, maybe that was a bit exaggerated, but you get the picture.

There was a huge window at the far right corner of the room, just to the left of the bed. It gave quite a mesmerizing view of the cityscape below, and just added that feeling of superiority. There was a wardrobe just a meter away from the window, polished to elegance. It was white with a slickness that made it seem like ceramic, with bits and pieces of golden touches here and there, like by all its edges and even the handles themselves. It just screamed opulence. I am pretty sure this wardrobe could buy a number of buildings in the slums, and I am not exaggerating this time.

Just opposite the wardrobe was where I lay, sprawled on this enormous bed that was just the size of my apartment. Hm. Why do I keep comparing it to that shitty house? Well, whatever.

The frame of the bed was gold itself. Well, not literal gold, but every nook and cranny of it was sprayed and polished to sparkling gold, and the strange whitish design at the front only made it more beautiful. Anyway, just adjacent to it was a room I since dubbed the washroom. There was a transparent door just there. Well, it looked transparent but it was not, as you could only make out blurry colors of what was inside from where I stood.

Beside the bed was a table. It was not too big, but it was just about the right size to be placed close to a bed. It had a strange device placed at the center, but it would not take a genius to figure out just what that was. An alarm, I think.

Alright, enough of that. I have to act fast. Things would start to get interesting from this moment on.

With that thought in mind, I begrudgingly stood up and walked to the other extension of the room which had a huge table with a laptop on it. Well, the laptop was solely there because I had requested for one. Getting to the table, I pulled one of the chairs back and sat on it. I then tilted the laptop in my direction so that I was able to see it clearly. Next, I turned it on through a single command.

"Turn on."

The screen displayed a rather cool logo before booting.

"Alright, what should I do first?" I asked, gazing at the ceiling with amusement.

They are probably hunting for me right about now, and considering the influence they have in my last saved location, I cannot really move freely.

"Hah, this is really an enormous pain in the ass," I quipped, leaning back on the chair as the laptop finally displayed the welcome interface before proceeding to the desktop screen.

But I cannot lay low, at least not now.

"Well, technically I have about four months before the new map comes into play so..." Hmm. Perhaps laying low is not really that much of a bad idea. But I should at least get things sorted out just in case.

With one hand placed on the back of my neck, I twisted my head, hearing a satisfying cracking sound, before placing my hands on the keyboard. I scrolled the arrow head around the desktop searching for my favorite browser, but no luck. I then opted for the preinstalled browser which probably came with the laptop.

FlamingFox? Why does it sound so weird? Well, whatever.

I tapped the browser and it took about a grueling five seconds for it to start.

I typed in at the URL search, and just then, the familiar interface popped up. GlobalMarket. It was an ecommerce website for purchasing stuff online. I frequented this website a lot of times, but that was back when I was so desperate and naive, searching for any temporary skill patches sold online. Fucking scam bastards.

Well, the bad memories aside, I actually just liked checking out expensive stuff. I could not actually afford any of those things, but yeah, it was just oddly satisfying.

Sighs. I moved the arrow head to the plus sign just on top of the tab and was about to tap when I suddenly had a rethink. My game account is too precious to log into on just any device, at least not with everyone being a hacker these days.

With a resigned sigh, I opened my phone and logged in after a few minutes. With that, I exchanged some of those golds into USD, then proceeded to fund my account. Hmm. I owe the bank a loan, do I not? Tsk. Let me just buy it directly.

With that, I logged into my Global account, searched for a VR pod, one of the latest releases, rumored to be impossibly immersive.

Well, fuck me to death! A hundred thousand USD?

Well, good thing I am filthy rich.
