Chapter 1 - Awakening as a Summoner

"Soldier get up!! The skeleton army is approaching! Get to the wall as soon as possible!" Another soldier shouted while passing all the tents to wake up every soldier at the northern wall

This is the seventh month since the apocalypse started and monster armies started invading earth. To fight back against the monsters humans decided to set up a base on the other side of one of these portals. This base was called: Vindicta base. For 2 months soldiers have been stationed here.

20.000 troops were deployed here. Electronics do not work on this side of the portal so only weapons and ammunition and basic supplies are being sent over. However the portal has been showing problems since last week. Supply runs have not been made in a while. And no relief soldiers or new summoners have been sent in the last two weeks.

Summoners were the hope of humanity. Only one in 10.000 awakens as a summoner and of those that awaken only a few survive their first few months. Summoners all awaken as 1 star summoners, they awaken one element. And they get 1 summoned elemental beast for every star they gain. There are summoners that also awaken a talent but those that do awaken a talent are all pillars of humanity.

Summoners can evolve into a 2 star summoner by fighting with their summon. This will drain their mana and help stabilise and improve their core. Since last week only one summoner was left on the northern wall. The first summoner of humanity. The first summoner to reach 3-stars. Lukas Kaiser.

He is the summoner holding back the skeleton army for the last month on the north. And the northern wall has been under constant sieges. The eastern wall has seen almost no action. Humanity was lucky to have found an area easy to defend. The northern wall lead to a forest and a open grassland. The eastern wall however leads to a small rocky path where armies cannot easily traverse.

Djinn grabbed his stuff and ran towards the weapons case. Grabbing whatever weapon he could find. He picked up an assault rifle and a revolver as a secondary. However the moment he picked up the revolver his body was basked in a blinding light.

His blood started boiling and his bones and muscles were cracking down and being rebuilt. Mana started flooding into his body to repair the damages. These were the side effects of an awakening. A painful moment that would be remembered forever by those who had endured it. But all of this was worth it because those that did awaken would have the strength to fight back against their enemies.

Summoners were stronger physically, could use spells and summon strong companions to aid them in battle. Onlookers were stunned and started cheering however they soon remembered the dire situation and continued running towards the wall.

When the light gradually receded and the pain started subsiding. A white creature in a hat was looking at Djinn. "Ooh boy, I love the smell of gunpowder in the morning. Howdy partner." The creature said.

It wasn't just any creature. It was a skeleton cowboy dressed in a fully white outfit. Two revolvers hanging around his wast radiating a purifying aura. As well as the whip attached to his back.

"Yo.. you.. You're my summon?" Djinn stuttered. "That's right. Now are we needed somewhere cause I can hear the sweet melody of gunfire ringing in my ears." The cowboy asked him. "Follow me to the wall"

As they got closer to the wall. Lukas was already heading in their direction. A new summoner made him leave the wall for a bit. His summons could handle the skeletons until he was back.

"You're Djinn right kid. Come with me to the wall we'll talk on our way there." Lukas told him.

As they were climbing the stairs to the top Lukas explained to him what happened and what changed in him. Normally he would be sent back to earth to be trained but since the portal was having issues Lukas decided to train him himself.

He was after all one of humanities strongest summoners at the moment. The apocalypse had only begun for about half a year after all. Not many made it to 3-star within this time. As they got to the top of the wall Lukas asked him a question.

"So am I right to assume that your element as a summoner is the light element?" Lukas asked him. The cowboy asnwered before Djinn could even respond. "Right as rain mister. I could be considered a light elemental skeleton cowboy. At your service. If my master is that is."

"Fascinating. A skeleton of the light element. As if things couldn't get any weirder. But this is a good thing. The light element is one of the strongest elements against the monsters. Your awakening couldn't have come at a better time. Let's test your summon out" Said Lukas.

Djinn commanded the cowboy to let loose. He could not really see it on the skeletons face but Djinn knew for some reason that the skeleton was really excited to see combat.

The skeleton whistled and an astral white bull appeared before their eyes. The bull had beutiful white fur and it seemed as strong as some of the 2-star monsters Lukas had seen. And this was just the mount of The newly awakened kid's first summon. Lukas had high hopes for the future of this kid.

The cowboy mounted on top of the bull and looked at his summoner. "This ain't my first rodeo kid. Yee-haw!! While screaming that last bit the bull jumped off the platform. The skeletons hands went to his hips where two revolvers were holstered. He yanked them free and released a barrage of bullets.

Each bullet that was shot hit the head of a skeleton soldier in the opposing army. Normally a single bullet was not enough to kill the monsters. However these were not just any bullets. These bullets were constructed using the element of the summon. And there was nothing dark creatures feared more than light magic.

A dozen skeletons were killed before the skeleton reloaded his revolvers by spinning them, releasing the empty cases as new ones appeared in their place. The old casings hit the ground and dissolved into particles of light.

While the skeleton cowboy was raining down bullets on the enemies the bull was charging through them as if they were nothing. The bulls horn glowed with a radiant white light. Each skeleton pierced by his horns was killed and the bones of these skeletons turned into dust.

"You have quite the strong summon Djinn. After this battle you should join me at the wartable. We have a lot to discuss. But for now we should end this battle as soon as possible."

As Lukas said this his summons appeared in their vision again. They had been out of sight since Djinn joined him on the wall. Lukas had three summons. With every star you gain a new summon. How many stars a summoner could get was not really known yet.

But Lukas had three and his beasts were of the fire element. Also an element that was revered for its effectiveness against dark creatures and other monsters. A fire hawk, a fire wolf and a fire wyvern.

"It is time for the lich controlling these skeletons to show itself." Lukas said only a few seconds later enough skeletons were killed before a skeleton in dark robes was seen controlling these skeletons. It was hiding within the army.

The drake swooped in and breathed fire upon the lich's head before it could even retaliate. "The battle is over. Let the other soldiers take over and kill the remaining skeletons. We should head towards the command tent. Dismiss your summons or call him back."

Djinn called out to the cowboy to return. The cowboy and bull ran back towards the wall and the cowboy jumped off the bulls back onto the wall. Before the bull could crash into the wall it dissipated into light particles.

"Let's head to the saloon. What do ya say partner." The cowboy said. "We're heading to the commanders tent" said Djinn. "Allrighty then"
