Chapter 554 - IPL 2018 - 7

The morning sun broke through the light curtains of the bedroom in Shamshabad. The house was quiet.

Siddanth sat in a comfortable armchair near the window, holding a cup of warm black coffee. He looked toward the center of the room. Rishi and Aadhya were awake inside their wooden cradles. They were not crying. They were simply looking up at the small, colorful toys hanging above them, occasionally moving their small hands.

Krithika walked into the room carrying a folded stack of clean baby clothes. She placed them on the dresser and walked over to the cradles. She smiled, leaning down to gently touch Aadhya's cheek.

"They woke up early today," Krithika said softly.

"They slept through the night," Siddanth noted, taking a sip of his coffee. "They are finding their routine."

"Are you finding yours?" Krithika asked, turning to look at him. "The group stage is finally over. You have a few days before the final."

Siddanth nodded. The long, demanding schedule of the Indian Premier League league phase had concluded the previous night.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad had achieved something that no other franchise had ever managed to do in the history of the tournament. They had played fourteen league matches. They had won all fourteen. It was a perfect, unbeaten run.

The campaign was built on clear planning and player management. Once the team had officially secured their spot in the playoffs after the tenth match, Siddanth had utilized the remaining fixtures to test the squad depth.

He rested the senior players who had carried the heavy workload. Shikhar Dhawan was given a break for the final two league matches. Instead of bringing in a replacement middle-order batsman, Siddanth promoted young Shubman Gill to open the innings alongside him. It was a direct show of faith. Gill took the opportunity, scoring steady runs and experiencing the pressure of facing the new ball in a packed stadium.

While the batting order saw changes, the bowling unit remained focused. Rashid Khan specifically requested to play every single match. The young Afghan spinner was in a tight race for the Purple Cap. Siddanth obliged, allowing Rashid to bowl his full quota of overs in every game, which helped him secure the top spot on the wicket-taking leaderboard by the end of the league stage.

Siddanth himself had not slowed down. He used the final stretch of group games to refine his timing and shot selection. He scored three more centuries in those last five matches, firmly cementing his position as the undisputed top run-scorer of the season. He played with a calm, unbothered rhythm, treating the matches as extended practice sessions for the upcoming knockouts.

The playoff bracket was set. Sunrisers Hyderabad finished at the top of the table. Chennai Super Kings finished second. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals secured the third and fourth spots.

The structure of the playoffs gave the top two teams a clear advantage. They played each other in Qualifier 1. The winner advanced directly to the final. The loser received a second chance in Qualifier 2.

Qualifier 1 took place earlier in the week. Sunrisers Hyderabad faced the Chennai Super Kings.

It was a quiet, clinical game. The Chennai batsmen struggled against the tight lengths of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the deceptive spin of Rashid Khan. Sunrisers chased the moderate target down comfortably. Siddanth anchored the innings, rotating the strike and finding the boundaries without taking any risks. Sunrisers won the match, securing their place in the grand final and earning a few extra days of rest.

Chennai Super Kings traveled to face the winner of the Eliminator match. They played a hard-fought game in Qualifier 2, eventually winning it to secure their return to the final.

The stage was set for a rematch.

Siddanth finished his coffee and set the cup on the windowsill. He stood up and walked over to the cradles. He reached down and gently picked Rishi up, supporting his head. The baby boy looked at him with dark, calm eyes.

"The team bus leaves for the stadium at four," Siddanth told Krithika, rocking his son slightly.

"We will be there," Krithika promised, picking Aadhya up from the other cradle. "Anjali already prepared her orange jersey. Athamma and Mamayya will take care of the kids."

"Tell Anjali not to bring those loud plastic horns into the box," Siddanth requested with a slight smile.

Krithika laughed softly. "I will warn her."

They spent the rest of the morning together in the quiet house. There were no tense strategy meetings or frantic phone calls. The plans for the Chennai Super Kings were already finalized. The field placements were decided. The bowlers knew their roles.

In the late afternoon, Siddanth drove to the ITC Kakatiya hotel. He joined his teammates. They boarded the luxury bus and drove toward Nagole.

The city of Hyderabad was ready for the final.

The streets leading to the NEXUS Smart Stadium were flooded with fans. Vendors sold flags, hats, and face paint on the sidewalks. The traffic moved slowly, guided by a heavy police presence.

The stadium itself looked impressive against the evening sky. The entire LED exterior shell of the building glowed in a vibrant, continuous orange color. Thousands of fans were already streaming through the digital turnstiles, eager to find their seats.

Inside the stadium, the atmosphere was festive. Music played over the speakers. The ground staff was putting the final touches on the pitch, painting the white crease lines and rolling the surface one last time.

High up in the broadcast box, the pre-match show went live.

A sleek glass desk sat in the center of the studio. The large screen behind the panel displayed the two team logos.

Harsha Bhogle looked into the camera. He was joined by Sunil Gavaskar, Kevin Pietersen, and Michael Clarke.

"Good evening, and welcome to the grand final of the 2018 Indian Premier League," Harsha began, his voice carrying a familiar, engaging tone. "We are here at the magnificent NEXUS Smart Stadium in Hyderabad. Tonight, two very different teams will face off for the ultimate prize. The Chennai Super Kings, returning to the league with their vast experience, taking on the defending champions, the Sunrisers Hyderabad."

Harsha turned to the panel. "Michael, let us start with the visiting team. Chennai took the long route to get here, playing in Qualifier 2. What makes them so resilient in these knockout games?"

Michael Clarke adjusted his posture. "It comes down to leadership and experience, Harsha. You look at their dressing room. MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo. These guys have played hundreds of high-pressure games. They do not panic when the required run rate climbs. They know how to take the game deep and capitalize on the mistakes of the opposition."

"They rely heavily on their spin attack," Sunil Gavaskar added. "Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja control the middle overs. Dhoni uses them perfectly to slow the game down. If the pitch here in Hyderabad offers any grip, Chennai will be very dangerous."

"But they are facing a team that simply does not make mistakes," Harsha pointed out, shifting the focus. "Kevin, we have to talk about Sunrisers Hyderabad. They have not lost a single match this entire season. Fourteen wins in the group stage. One win in the qualifier. It is a spotless record."

Kevin Pietersen leaned forward, tapping his pen on the desk. "It is a complete team, Harsha. They have every single base covered. If you look at their bowling, it is relentless. Bhuvneshwar Kumar swings the new ball. Rashid Khan is unreadable in the middle. Siddarth Kaul handles the death overs. The opposition batsmen never get a chance to breathe."

"And they are led by a man who has completely changed the way we view this format," Gavaskar said, his tone full of respect.

The screen behind them shifted to display a massive graphic of Siddanth Deva. The numbers next to his picture were staggering.

SIDDANTH DEVA - IPL 2018 SEASON STATS

Runs: 1,534

Wickets: 20

Centuries: 9

"We talk about T20 cricket being a game of risks," Gavaskar explained to the viewers, gesturing to the graphic. "What makes Siddanth so terrifying is his mastery over the entire 360-degree canvas. He plays the most pristine, textbook cover drives you will ever see, perfectly orthodox. But the moment the bowler adjusts their line, he drops to one knee and executes an outrageous reverse sweep or a fine scoop over the wicketkeeper's head. He has every single conventional and unorthodox shot in the manual, and he executes them without losing his balance."

"Just look at those numbers on the screen," Michael Clarke pointed out, shaking his head in disbelief. "Fifteen matches played so far. 1,534 runs. And 20 wickets. That is not just a purple patch; that is monopolization of the tournament. He has outscored entire batting line-ups on his own."

"He has redefined the opening role this season," Pietersen added. "Taking the responsibility to face the new ball, bat through the innings, play every shot in the book, and still manage the field placements when he bowls. His fitness levels are extraordinary."

"The question now is whether Chennai can find a way past him and this impenetrable fortress," Harsha said, wrapping up the segment. "Can MS Dhoni's men slay the giant tonight? Or will Sunrisers Hyderabad become the 'Invincibles', completing a flawless, unbeaten season to lift the IPL trophy for an unprecedented third time in a row? Gentlemen, it is time for your final predictions."

"You cannot bet against an unbeaten team," Clarke said simply. "Sunrisers Hyderabad for the three-peat."

"Hyderabad has the better bowling attack. They will win," Gavaskar stated.

"Sunrisers. The momentum is entirely with them," Pietersen agreed.

"A unanimous decision from the panel," Harsha smiled. "Let us head down to the middle for the toss."

The broadcast switched from the studio to the center of the pitch.

The stadium noise swelled as the two captains walked out. The crowd was a massive sea of orange, with small pockets of yellow scattered throughout the stands.

Siddanth Deva walked to the pitch wearing his orange and black jersey. MS Dhoni walked next to him in yellow. They were teammates for the national side, and they shared a deep, mutual respect. They bumped fists and shared a quick, quiet laugh before turning to the presenter.

Sanjay Manjrekar held the microphone. The match referee stood by with the coin.

"I am here with the two captains for the final of the 2018 IPL," Sanjay announced to the stadium. "MS Dhoni and Siddanth Deva. Siddanth, you are the home captain. Give the coin a flip."

Siddanth took the gold coin. He tossed it high into the air.

"Heads," MS Dhoni called out calmly.

The coin landed on the dry pitch and settled.

"It is tails," Sanjay said, looking down. "Siddanth, you have won the toss. What is your decision for the final?"

Siddanth looked at the presenter. The crowd quieted down slightly to hear his answer.

"We are going to bowl first, Sanjay," Siddanth said clearly.

"Bowling first in a big final?" Sanjay asked, slightly surprised. "Teams usually prefer to put runs on the board in these pressure games."

"We are very comfortable chasing," Siddanth explained his reasoning. "The pitch looks good, but there is always a chance of dew forming later in the evening under these lights. We want to know what target we are chasing. Our bowlers have done an excellent job restricting teams all season, and we back them to do it again tonight."

"Any changes to your playing eleven?" Sanjay asked.

"No changes from the qualifier," Siddanth confirmed. "We are playing the same team. We are ready."

Sanjay turned the microphone to MS Dhoni. "Mahi, you have to bat first. What are your thoughts?"

"We would have bowled first as well," Dhoni admitted with a small smile. "The dew is a factor here. But the toss is not in our control. We need to assess the pitch quickly, build a few good partnerships, and put a challenging total on the board. We are also playing the same eleven."

The two captains shook hands one more time. They turned and jogged back to their respective dugouts to finalize their preparations for the first innings.

The stadium lights blazed at full capacity. The umpires walked out to the middle, carrying the new white ball.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad players gathered near the boundary rope for a brief huddle. Siddanth spoke a few words, his tone calm and focused. The team broke the huddle and spread out onto the green outfield.
