The Xtreme Sports Bar in Jubilee Hills was practically vibrating. It was 11:30 AM on a Friday, but the dim, neon-lit interior felt like midnight on New Year's Eve. The air was thick with the scent of stale spilled beer, heavily spiced Chicken 65, and the nervous sweat of intensely focused cricket fans.
Prakash, Ravi, and Kiran had secured a circular booth near the back wall, offering them an unobstructed, prime view of the massive 100-inch projector screen.
"Boss! Excuse me, boss!" Kiran yelled over the deafening hum of the crowd, waving frantically at a waiter navigating the narrow aisles with a tray full of glass mugs. "One Kingfisher tower! And bring the peanut masala fast, the toss is happening!"
The waiter gave a hurried nod and vanished into the crowd.
On the massive screen, the broadcast cut to the sun-drenched WACA ground in Perth. The volume on the bar's surround sound system was cranked to the absolute maximum, drowning out the ambient music.
[COMMENTARY BOX - ON TELEVISION]
Harsha Bhogle:"A very warm welcome to the WACA! We are live from Perth for this crucial Pool B encounter between India and the West Indies. The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing. I have the two captains, MS Dhoni and Jason Holder, with me. Jason Holder flips the coin..."
Match Referee:"Heads is the call. It is Tails."
Harsha Bhogle:"Jason, you've won the toss on a fast, bouncy Perth wicket. What are you going to do?"
"We're going to bat first, Harsha," Jason Holder's voice echoed through the bar speakers. "It looks like a very good surface. We want to put runs on the board and apply pressure later. We have a couple of changes. Kemar Roach comes in."
Harsha Bhogle:"MS, would you have batted as well?"
"We actually wanted to bowl first," Dhoni replied with his trademark calm smile. "The pitch has a bit of moisture early on. Our fast bowlers have been doing well, and we want to exploit that early bounce. We are playing an unchanged eleven."
A graphic flashed on the screen, displaying the playing XIs.
INDIA: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Siddanth Deva, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav.
WEST INDIES: Dwayne Smith, Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Lendl Simmons, Jonathan Carter, Darren Sammy, Andre Russell, Jason Holder (c), Jerome Taylor, Kemar Roach.
Prakash, adjusting his glasses, leaned over the table, assuming his role as the group's armchair expert.
"Look at that West Indies lineup," Prakash stated, tapping his index finger on the wooden table. "If Chris Gayle bats for fifteen overs, we are finished. The WACA boundaries are too small square of the wicket for a guy like him. Shami and Umesh need to bowl back-of-a-length. If they pitch it up, he will hit them into the Swan River."
"Relax, Prakash. Shami is in the form of his life," Ravi argued, carefully arranging the salt and pepper shakers into a perfectly straight line. Ravi was heavily superstitious; he believed that if the table condiments were misaligned, India would lose early wickets. "And we have Siddanth. The bounce here is going to make him unplayable."
The waiter arrived, slamming a towering three-liter tube of cold beer onto the center of the table alongside two bowls of spicy peanut masala and a plate of sizzling chicken. Kiran immediately began dispensing the beer into their frosted mugs.
"To the quarter-finals!" Kiran cheered, clinking his heavy glass against his friends' mugs.
"Just drink, idiot. Don't jinx it," Ravi muttered, not breaking eye contact with the screen.
The Indian team walked out onto the bright green turf of the WACA. Mohammed Shami marked his run-up. Dwayne Smith and the towering, imposing figure of Chris Gayle walked out to the middle.
The entire sports bar fell into a tense, collective silence as Shami charged in for the first ball.
0.1 Shami bowled a beautiful, full-length delivery that swung away slightly from Dwayne Smith. Smith pushed at it tentatively, missing the outside edge by a fraction.
A loud, collective "Ooooh!" echoed through the bar.
"Good start, good start," Prakash nodded approvingly, throwing a handful of peanuts into his mouth. "Keep it there, Shami."
The first few overs were a cagey affair. Shami and Umesh Yadav hit the deck hard, utilizing the extreme pace and bounce of the Perth pitch. Dwayne Smith looked incredibly uncomfortable against the rising ball, but at the other end, Chris Gayle was ominously quiet, leaving the good balls and waiting for his opportunity.
In the 5th over, Umesh Yadav pitched it slightly full on the pads. Gayle simply flicked his wrists. The ball rocketed off the heavy bat, clearing the deep square-leg boundary for a massive six.
The collective groan in the bar was palpable.
"I told you!" Prakash yelled, slamming his hand on the table. "Don't bowl full on his pads! What is Umesh doing? MS needs to push the square leg fielder back!"
"It's just one six, calm down," Kiran reasoned, taking a gulp of beer.
The tension spiked in the 8th over. Mohammed Shami returned for his second spell. Gayle was on strike, batting on 21, starting to look incredibly dangerous. He had just clubbed Shami for a boundary through the covers on the previous delivery.
[COMMENTARY BOX - ON TELEVISION]
Ian Bishop:"Shami has to adjust his length here. Gayle is standing tall, waiting for the full delivery. He cannot offer any width on this WACA pitch."
Shami steamed in. He didn't pitch it up. He banged it in short, angling it sharply into Gayle's ribcage.
Gayle, cramped for room, instinctively went for the pull shot. But the WACA bounce was faster and steeper than he anticipated. He was late on the shot. The ball took the top edge of the massive bat and flew incredibly high into the Perth sky.
Every single person in the Xtreme Sports Bar stood up from their chairs simultaneously.
The camera panned to deep square leg. Umesh Yadav was settling underneath the swirling, high ball.
"Catch it! Catch it! Catch it!" Ravi chanted repeatedly, his hands clasped together in a desperate prayer, refusing to blink.
Umesh kept his eyes glued to the white leather, formed a secure reverse cup, and took the catch cleanly, falling onto his knees safely inside the boundary rope.
[COMMENTARY BOX - ON TELEVISION]
Harsha Bhogle:"CAUGHT! MOHAMMED SHAMI GETS THE BIG FISH! Chris Gayle is gone! He rushed him with the short ball, and Umesh Yadav takes a brilliant, high-pressure catch in the deep!"
The sports bar absolutely erupted.
Kiran screamed in delight, jumping up and high-fiving the complete stranger at the adjacent table. Prakash pumped his fists, nearly knocking over his beer mug.
"YES! SHAMI BHAI! WHAT A BALL!" Kiran roared over the noise of the cheering crowd. "That's how you bowl to the Universe Boss! Pack your bags, Gayle!"
"That is exactly what I said!" Prakash yelled, pointing a vindicated finger at the screen. "Back of a length! Cramp him! Dhoni knows exactly what he's doing!"
Ravi slowly sat back down, wiping a layer of nervous sweat from his forehead. He immediately reached out and realigned the salt shaker, which had vibrated out of place during the celebration. "Okay. One down. Now we squeeze them."
Marlon Samuels walked out to bat at number three. He joined the struggling Dwayne Smith.
With Gayle gone, the Indian fast bowlers turned the screws. Shami and Umesh bowled with relentless discipline. The West Indian run rate plummeted. By the 15th over, the score was a meager 52 for 1.
MS Dhoni signaled for a bowling change. The camera focused on Siddanth Deva taking his cap off and handing it to the umpire.
The bar buzzed with renewed excitement.
"The Devil is here," Kiran grinned, pouring himself another mug of beer. "Dwayne Smith is going to be dancing on the crease now. Watch the speed gun."
[COMMENTARY BOX - ON TELEVISION]
Ian Bishop:"And here comes Siddanth Deva. The WACA pitch is custom-built for his style of bowling. Dwayne Smith has looked very uncomfortable against the short ball today."
Siddanth measured his run-up. He ran in smoothly, a terrifying combination of athletic grace and coiled power.
15.1 Siddanth hit the deck hard on a fourth-stump line. The speed gun flashed 152 kmph. Dwayne Smith awkwardly fended it away to point.
15.2 A sharp bouncer aimed at the helmet. Smith ducked clumsily, taking his eyes off the ball entirely.
"He's terrified," Prakash laughed, munching on a piece of spicy chicken. "Smith doesn't want to be there. Siddanth is going to eat him alive."
15.3 Siddanth pitched it slightly fuller, slanting it back into the right-hander at 154 kmph. Smith tried to defend from the crease, his feet completely cemented to the pitch.
The ball seamed back viciously off the hard surface, took the inside edge of the bat, and crashed violently into the top of the leg stump, sending the bail flying.
[COMMENTARY BOX - ON TELEVISION]
Harsha Bhogle:"BOWLED HIM! Siddanth Deva strikes in his very first over! Beaten for sheer pace and seam movement! Dwayne Smith's agonizing stay at the crease comes to an end!"
"BOOM!" Kiran shouted, slamming his hand on the table. "What did I tell you?! Unplayable on this pitch!"
"That seam position is just flawless," Prakash nodded, highly impressed, completely ignoring his beer. "He didn't even try to bowl a yorker. He just hit the seam and let the pitch do the work."
Denesh Ramdin walked out to join Marlon Samuels. The West Indies were 54 for 2, staring down the barrel of a massive collapse.
For the next ten overs, Siddanth and Ravichandran Ashwin bowled in tandem. Ashwin, using his height, extracted surprising bounce from the WACA pitch, keeping Ramdin quiet. Siddanth continued to hit hard lengths from the other end, refusing to offer any width.
The scoring dried up completely. The pressure in the bar eased, shifting from nervous tension to a comfortable, relaxed watch party.
"Waiter! Another plate of Chicken 65, extra spicy," Ravi ordered, finally relaxing his rigid posture.
Kiran suddenly stood up from the booth. "I need to hit the washroom. Don't let them take a wicket while I'm gone."
"Hurry up, you have a weak bladder," Prakash teased him.
Kiran navigated through the crowded bar, disappearing around the corner toward the restrooms.
On the screen, Siddanth Deva was steaming in for the fourth over of his spell. Marlon Samuels, who had been struggling to rotate the strike, was on strike.
24.4 Siddanth bowled a sharp, back-of-a-length delivery outside off stump. It wasn't particularly wide, but Samuels, frustrated by the lack of boundaries, threw his hands at a forceful square cut.
The extra bounce from the WACA pitch defeated the shot. The ball caught the thick outside edge and flew sharply toward MS Dhoni. Dhoni didn't even have to dive; he just raised his gloves and pouched the ball safely at chest height.
[COMMENTARY BOX - ON TELEVISION]
Ian Bishop:"Edged and taken! Siddanth Deva has his second! Marlon Samuels perishes trying to break the shackles! A brilliant, disciplined piece of bowling, extracting that extra bounce."
The bar cheered loudly. Prakash and Ravi high-fived across the table.
Exactly ten seconds later, Kiran emerged from the washroom, wiping his hands on his jeans. He looked at the giant screen, seeing the replay of Samuels walking back to the pavilion.
"Are you kidding me?!" Kiran complained loudly, walking back to the booth. "I leave for two minutes and he takes a wicket!"
As Kiran tried to slide back into the booth, Ravi immediately stood up and physically blocked his path, his eyes wide with absolute, irrational superstition.
"No, no, no! Stop right there!" Ravi commanded, holding his hand up like a traffic cop.
"What?" Kiran asked, confused.
"You went to the washroom, and Siddanth took a wicket," Ravi explained, his logic completely flawless in the context of an Indian sports bar. "It's a lucky charm. You cannot sit back down. You have to go back to the washroom."
"Are you insane, Ravi?" Kiran groaned. "It smells like bleach in there. I am not standing in the men's toilet for the rest of the match!"
"I don't care if it smells like a sewer, Kiran! You are messing with the cosmic alignment of the match!" Ravi argued loudly. Several people at the adjacent tables nodded in absolute, solemn agreement with Ravi's superstitious logic.
"Just stand near the hallway, Kiran," Prakash laughed, finding a compromise. "Don't sit down until the over is finished."
Kiran sighed dramatically, grabbing his half-full beer mug, and went to stand near the dark corridor leading to the restrooms. "I hate you both."
The West Indian innings descended into a grim battle for survival. Lendl Simmons and Jonathan Carter tried to rebuild, but the Indian spinners, Ashwin and Jadeja, bowled an incredibly tight middle phase. By the 35th over, West Indies had managed to crawl to 135 for 4, with Umesh Yadav returning to remove Ramdin.
Darren Sammy and Andre Russell, the two explosive lower-order hitters, were now at the crease. This was the exact phase where the West Indies usually accelerated, utilizing raw power to push their totals past 250.
"Here comes the danger," Prakash noted, leaning forward as Andre Russell took strike against Shami. "Russell can hit them miles. We need a wicket right now, or they will score 80 runs in the last ten overs."
"Bring Siddanth back," Ravi said, checking the on-screen graphics. "He has three overs left."
As if hearing Ravi's command, MS Dhoni threw the ball back to Siddanth Deva for the 41st over.
The bar patrons settled back in. The atmosphere tensed up again. Everyone knew Andre Russell's capability. If he got going, the momentum would shift entirely.
Siddanth marked his run-up. He knew exactly what he was bowling against the big Jamaican all-rounder.
40.1 Siddanth steamed in and delivered a brutal, 150 kmph bouncer directed right at Russell's throat. Russell awkwardly fended it away, the ball falling safely on the pitch.
40.2 Siddanth pitched it slightly fuller, but extremely wide outside off. Russell threw a massive swing at it and missed completely.
"He's setting him up," Prakash whispered, analyzing the sequence. "He's pushing him back with the short ball and teasing him wide. The yorker is coming."
40.3 Siddanth ran in fast. He didn't drop his pace. He didn't bowl short.
He delivered an absolute missile. A 157 kmph swinging yorker, aimed directly at the base of the middle stump.
Andre Russell, expecting another short ball, was cemented deep inside his crease. His massive bat came down in a desperate, panicked arc, but the sheer velocity of the delivery beat him entirely.
The ball crashed into the base of the middle stump with a violent, resounding crack that was audible even through the bar's speakers. The stump cartwheeled backward out of the ground.
[COMMENTARY BOX - ON TELEVISION]
Harsha Bhogle:"BOWLED HIM! ABSOLUTELY SHATTERED THE TIMBER! Siddanth Deva produces a magical yorker! Andre Russell had absolutely no answer to that! The speed gun says 157 kilometers per hour!"
Ian Bishop:"That is fast bowling of the highest pedigree, Harsha! You simply cannot play that when you are expecting the short ball. Siddanth Deva has his third wicket, and he has completely broken the back of this West Indian lineup!"
The Xtreme Sports Bar exploded.
It wasn't just cheers; it was a visceral roar of primal satisfaction. To see an opposing power hitter completely dismantled by sheer, express pace was the ultimate thrill for an Indian cricket fan.
"DEVA! DEVA! DEVA!" a large group of college students in the corner booth started chanting, slamming their empty mugs on the tables.
Kiran sprinted back from the restroom hallway, spilling a few drops of beer onto the floor, completely abandoning the superstition. "DID YOU SEE THAT?! HE BROKE THE STUMP! HE ACTUALLY BROKE THE STUMP!"
"That's my Vice-Captain!" Ravi cheered, high-fiving Prakash aggressively. "What a ball! Who needs a spin chokehold when you can just rip the stumps out of the ground?!"
"Order another tower!" Prakash yelled happily to the passing waiter. "We are celebrating early!"
With Russell gone, the West Indian tail offered no resistance. Jason Holder tried to farm the strike, but the Indian bowling unit hunted in a pack. Shami returned to pick up his third wicket, bowling Holder, and Umesh Yadav cleaned up Jerome Taylor.
In the 44.2 over, Kemar Roach hit a ball straight into the air off Ravindra Jadeja. MS Dhoni called for it, taking a simple catch under the high ball.
The innings was over.
The West Indies were bowled out for just 182 runs.
[COMMENTARY BOX - INNINGS BREAK]
Harsha Bhogle:"And that is the end of the innings! West Indies are bowled out for a very disappointing 182. A sensational, highly disciplined bowling performance by India on a bouncy WACA pitch. Mohammed Shami was brilliant with his 3 wickets, but Siddanth Deva was the absolute standout, taking 3 for 25 in his spell, including that unplayable yorker to Andre Russell."
Ian Bishop:"It's a very sub-par total, Harsha. The Indian fast bowlers executed their plans perfectly. They used the bounce, they bowled the right lengths to Gayle, and they didn't allow any partnerships to build. Jason Holder will need a miracle from his fast bowlers, Taylor and Roach, to defend 182 here."
In the bar, the tension completely evaporated. The DJ switched off the commentary feed and blasted an upbeat Punjabi track. The waiters rushed around, clearing empty plates and bringing fresh rounds of drinks to the highly relaxed, celebrating patrons.
Prakash leaned back in his booth, sipping his fresh beer. "183 to win. It's a walk in the park. Rohit and Shikhar will finish this by the 30th over."
"Don't be so arrogant," Ravi warned, immediately reaching out to align the salt and pepper shakers again, preparing for the second innings. "It's still the WACA. Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach have the new ball. If it swings early, 183 can suddenly look like 283."
"Ravi is right," Kiran nodded, wiping his mouth. "Remember the Brisbane match in the Tri-Series? We collapsed against the moving ball. We just need a solid start. If we survive the first ten overs, we win."
"We have Virat, we have Rahane, and we have Siddanth in the shed. Even if we lose early wickets, we are not losing this match," Prakash stated confidently.
The massive projector screen faded to a commercial break, showing a glossy advertisement for the new NEXUS Apex smartphone, featuring Siddanth Deva in a sleek black suit holding the device.
"Look at him," Kiran laughed, pointing his beer mug at the screen. "He just broke Andre Russell's stumps, and now he's trying to sell me a phone. The guy is literally everywhere."
"I bought that phone last week," Ravi admitted, pulling a matte-black NEXUS Bolt out of his pocket. "It's actually really fast. The camera is insane."
"Of course it is. The man doesn't fail," Prakash smiled.
The commercial break ended. The broadcast returned to the stadium. The bright Perth sun beat down on the pitch. The West Indian team, looking desperate and fired up, walked out into the middle. Jerome Taylor was loosening his shoulders, holding the new white Kookaburra ball.
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma walked down the pavilion steps, tapping their bats, ready to begin the chase.
The chatter in the sports bar slowly died down. The music was muted, and the commentary was turned back up. The drinks were set down.
183 runs stood between India and their fourth consecutive World Cup victory.
"Here we go," Ravi whispered, crossing his fingers tightly under the table.
The second innings was about to begin.
