Chapter 336 - IPL 2014 - 10

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore was a pulsating, living entity. The altitude provided a cool breeze, but the temperature inside the arena was absolutely boiling over. It was the night of the 2014 Indian Premier League Final.

In the VIP enclosures, the atmosphere was a stark contrast of nervous energy and glamorous celebration. Shah Rukh Khan, the charismatic co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, was leaning over the balcony with his family, wearing a bright purple KKR jersey and waving passionately to the sea of supporters in the stands below.

On the other side of the hospitality tier, Kalanithi Maran and his family sat with quiet, intense anticipation; it was their first time seeing their franchise in an IPL Final, and the stakes were monumental.

Actor Venkatesh, fully embracing the spirit of the occasion, was wearing a custom-made orange button-up shirt with the Sunrisers Hyderabad logo stitched over the chest. He was chatting animatedly with a few other celebrities who had flown in from Hyderabad.

A few boxes down, a special enclosure hosted the legends of the game. Sourav Ganguly sat with a neutral expression, analytically observing the pitch roller, while Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman shared quiet, technical observations about the outfield and the impending dew factor.

In the North Stand, a family of die-hard KKR fans from Bengal—Mr. Banerjee, his wife, and their two teenage sons—were painted in purple and gold. They clutched their replica flags tightly, hoping Gautam Gambhir could weave his tactical magic one more time and stop the SRH juggernaut.

Just a few rows behind them, a massive group of traveling SRH fans from Hyderabad had practically taken over the block. Among them was Karthik, an engineering student who had driven down with his friends.

They were chanting Siddanth Deva's name to the rhythmic, deafening beat of traditional Telugu drums, turning their section of the stadium into a sea of orange flags.

---

Inside the Sunrisers Hyderabad dressing room, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaos outside. It was a sanctuary of absolute, focused calm. The scent of Deep Heat muscle rub and fresh leather cricket balls filled the enclosed space.

Siddanth Deva sat in front of his locker, his customized Nike bat resting between his knees. The grueling, two-month campaign had culminated in this single night. He looked around the room, observing his squad.

David Warner was silently stretching his hamstrings on a yoga mat, his earphones dialed to a heavy bass track.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was tossing a new white cricket ball from hand to hand, feeling the pronounced seam, his eyes closed in deep visualization.

Dale Steyn was staring blankly at the wall, a terrifying, quiet intensity settling over him.

Tom Moody stood at the center of the room, looking at the tactical whiteboard.

"We know the pitch," Moody said, his voice steady. "It's a concrete runway. The boundaries are notoriously short, especially square of the wicket. A par score here tonight is easily 200, maybe even 220. Kolkata Knight Riders are riding a massive wave of momentum. They've won eight on the bounce, and they have the best spin attack in the tournament."

Moody pointed to a list of KKR players. "We do not let Sunil Narine settle into a rhythm. We attack their pacers, Umesh Yadav and Morne Morkel, in the powerplay. Force Gambhir to bring the spinners on early before the ball gets soft. When we bowl, we stick to wide lines and yorkers. No free width for Robin Uthappa or Yusuf Pathan."

Moody turned to Siddanth. "Captain?"

Siddanth stood up, adjusting his orange jersey.

"Kolkata has forgotten how to lose," Siddanth addressed his team, his voice low but carrying absolute authority. "Gautam Gambhir is going to come out tonight and try to impose his will on this game from ball one. He thrives on aggressive body language. We do not let him dictate the tempo. We strike first."

Siddanth met the eyes of his core players. "If we bat, we hit them so hard in the first ten overs they forget their entire game plan. If we bowl, we suffocate them in the powerplay. We've been the best team in this tournament for a reason. Let's go out there and prove it one last time."

A collective nod rippled through the squad.

[COMMENTARY BOX - PRE-MATCH]

Sunil Gavaskar:"A very warm welcome to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore! It all comes down to this. The grand finale of the 2014 Indian Premier League. The Sunrisers Hyderabad taking on Gautam Gambhir's unstoppable Kolkata Knight Riders. The atmosphere is absolutely electric. Harsha, this pitch looks like an absolute belter for the batsmen."

Harsha Bhogle:"It truly is a concrete runway, Ravi. The boundaries are notoriously short here, the outfield is lightning fast, and we have two of the most explosive batting lineups in the tournament. Let's head down to the middle for the toss."

Siddanth walked out to the center of the pitch. Gautam Gambhir stood opposite him, his expression intense and entirely unsmiling.

"Tails," Siddanth called as Gambhir flipped the coin.

It landed on Heads.

Ravi Shastri:"Gautam, you've won the toss in the big final. What are you going to do?"

"We are going to bowl first, Ravi," Gambhir stated immediately. "It's a great chasing ground, the pitch is hard, and we have a specific target in mind. Our spinners have been doing a fantastic job, and we want to restrict them early."

Ravi Shastri:"Siddanth, you have to set a target now. Are you disappointed with losing the toss?"

"Not at all, Ravi bhai," Siddanth smiled calmly. "We were actually looking to bat first anyway. Scoreboard pressure in a knockout game is a very real thing. If we can put up a massive total on this track, it allows our bowlers to attack freely."

The stage was set. The umpires walked out to the middle, followed by the KKR team. Aaron Finch and Shikhar Dhawan strode out to the middle. Morne Morkel took the new white ball.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad innings began with absolute fireworks. Aaron Finch and Shikhar Dhawan took full advantage of the flat Bangalore track.

Morkel ran in hard, hitting the deck at 145 kmph, but the true bounce allowed Finch to cut and pull with devastating power.

Umesh Yadav was in the 2nd over, and Dhawan effortlessly drove him flawlessly through the covers for two consecutive boundaries.

However, the aggressive start cost them their first wicket. In his 2nd over, Morkel dug one in short. Finch went for a massive pull but top-edged it high into the night sky, landing safely in the gloves of Robin Uthappa.

David Warner walked out to bat at number three.

Gambhir immediately introduced Sunil Narine in the fifth over. Narine managed to stem the flow slightly, but Warner happily tapped the ball into the gaps for singles while ruthlessly attacking the pacers at the other end.

By the end of the 8th over, SRH had raced to a staggering 85 for 1.

In the 9th over, Piyush Chawla was brought into the attack. He tossed his second ball up generously. Dhawan stepped out, aiming to clear deep mid-wicket, but the ball skidded on faster. It took the thick inside half of the bat and flew straight into the hands of Manish Pandey at long-on.

COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET

Harsha Bhogle:"Caught! Piyush Chawla provides the crucial breakthrough! A vital wicket for KKR, but look at who is walking out to the middle."

Ravi Shastri:"The stadium has absolutely erupted! Siddanth Deva makes his way to the crease. KKR needs to get him early, or they will be chasing a mountain."

Siddanth strode out to the middle, taking his guard. He seamlessly tapped his first ball to long-off for an easy single.

In the next over, he dispatched Morne Morkel for two effortless boundaries—one a flat-batted pull shot, the other a delicate late cut. Warner continued his assault at the other end, bringing up his half-century.

By the end of the 13th over, SRH was cruising beautifully at 150 for 1. Siddanth was batting on a rapid 32 off just 12 deliveries.

Gautam Gambhir, visibly frustrated by the constant hemorrhaging of runs, threw the ball to his premier left-arm all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan.

[COMMENTARY BOX - THE 15TH OVER]

Danny Morrison:"Here comes Shakib! Gambhir needs his experienced man to deliver right now. Siddanth Deva is looking incredibly dangerous."

14.1 Shakib fired the first ball in flat and quick at Siddanth's pads. Siddanth stayed deep in his crease, opening the face of the bat and carving it brilliantly behind square leg for a boundary.

Shakib glared down the pitch.

14.2 Shakib bowled a slower, looped delivery wide outside off. Siddanth casually stepped out of his crease, met the pitch of the ball perfectly, and lofted it effortlessly over the extra-cover boundary for a massive six.

As Siddanth tapped his bat inside the crease, Shakib walked aggressively down the pitch on his follow-through. Humiliated by being hit so easily, the bowler's frustration boiled over.

Shakib assumed Siddanth only spoke Telugu, Hindi, and English. He decided to vent his humiliation using his native tongue.

"Bhalobhasha dekhacchish? Boka choda," Shakib spat, his voice laced with venom. "Tor moto onek faporbaaz dekhechi. Khelte eshechis na natok korte? Shuorer baccha, crease e giye dara." (Showing off? Stupid f***. I've seen many show-offs like you. Did you come to play or do drama? Son of a pig, go stand in your crease.)

Siddanth didn't look confused. The Tower of Babel passive trait instantly decoded the Bengali insults in his brain.

The polite demeanor instantly vanished. The 'Devil' took complete control. Siddanth didn't step back. He took three quick steps toward Shakib, closing the distance until they were chest to chest, his eyes blazing.

Siddanth leaned in and replied in perfect, flawless Bengali.

"Mukh shomle kotha bol, madarchod," Siddanth warned, a lethal growl picked up clearly by the stump microphones. "Kake ki bolchish bhabe bol. Nahole tor bowling career aaj raate ekhanei shesh kore debo. Ekta ball o ar pitch korbe na." (Watch your mouth, mfer. Think before you speak to me. Or I'll end your bowling career right here tonight. Not a single ball will pitch again.)

Shakib completely froze, paralyzed by the shock of hearing the South Indian captain threaten him back in perfect Bengali. But the shock quickly morphed into explosive rage.

Before the umpires could intervene, Gautam Gambhir sprinted in from extra-cover. Known for his famously short temper, the KKR captain inserted himself directly between the two, forcefully pushing his chest toward Siddanth.

"Ae! Who the f*** do you think you are talking to?" Gambhir barked aggressively in Hindi, unaware of what Siddanth had actually said. "He's bowling! You think you're some god? Shut your mouth and bat!"

"Tell your bowler to mind his f***ing language, Gautam," Siddanth fired back instantly, completely unintimidated. "Or I'll end him tonight."

"Don't you dare threaten my players on my pitch," Gambhir yelled, pointing his finger inches from Siddanth's face. "I will end you right here!"

"I'll show you exactly what I own," Siddanth said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly icy whisper.

Umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Richard Illingworth finally wedged themselves between the two captains. David Warner ran down the pitch to pull Siddanth away, while Morne Morkel dragged a violently swearing Gambhir back toward the covers.

[COMMENTARY BOX - THE FIGHT]

Ravi Shastri:"Whoa! Things are boiling over at the Chinnaswamy! Gautam Gambhir and Siddanth Deva are going head-to-head! Shakib said something to Deva, and all absolute hell has broken loose!"

Harsha Bhogle:"This is ugly, Ravi. Gambhir is absolutely furious, defending his bowler, but Siddanth Deva is not backing down one inch."

Ravi Shastri:"You do not want to poke the Devil, Harsha. Shakib might have just made the biggest mistake of the tournament."

The umpires issued a stern, final warning. Gambhir angrily pushed all his boundary riders back to the rope.

Siddanth walked back to his crease. He stared dead ahead at Shakib with absolute, terrifying focus.

14.3 Shakib, rattled and trying to be clever, fired a quick, 95 kmph darting arm-ball at the leg stump to cramp the batsman. Siddanth cleared his front leg and launched a brutal helicopter shot. The ball cleared the deep mid-wicket boundary by forty yards. SIX.

14.4 Shakib panicked, bowling short and wide. Siddanth threw his hands at the ball, executing a ferocious flat-bat cut that sliced over point like a bullet. SIX.

14.5 Shakib tossed a flighted delivery up on middle stump. Siddanth stepped out and hit it with a straight bat. It flew over the bowler's head, smashing into the black sight screen. SIX.

14.6 Shakib looked completely broken. He bowled a flat, Standard delivery on the off-stump. Siddanth dropped onto one knee and executed a breathtaking slog-sweep, sending the ball soaring over deep square-leg. SIX.

[COMMENTARY BOX - THE RETALIATION]

Ravi Shastri:"SIX MORE! 34 RUNS OFF THE OVER! Siddanth Deva has absolutely dismantled Shakib Al Hasan!"

Harsha Bhogle:"This is the most terrifying display of retaliation I have ever seen! You provoke him, you abuse him, and he responds with sheer, unadulterated violence. Gautam Gambhir looks shell-shocked."

Siddanth didn't say a single word to Shakib or Gambhir as the over ended. He bumped gloves with David Warner. The statement was definitively made.

Fueled by adrenaline, Siddanth tore the entire KKR bowling attack to pieces in the final five overs. He showed no respect to Sunil Narine, stepping down the track and hitting him effortlessly over long-on. Morne Morkel tried bowling short, and Siddanth hooked him into the stands.

In the 19th over, facing Umesh Yadav, Siddanth flicked a full toss down to fine leg for a single.

In the 19th over, facing Umesh Yadav, Siddanth flicked a full toss down to fine leg for a single.

He had brought up his century in just 24 balls—shattering the record for the fastest century in IPL history. The crowd was on its feet, bowing to the masterclass.

David Warner provided phenomenal support at the other end, finishing with an unbeaten, magnificent 88. Sunrisers Hyderabad finished their 20 overs with a gargantuan, demoralizing total of 268 for 2. Siddanth Deva walked off unbeaten on 102* off 24 deliveries (one 4, fourteen 6s).

---

The target was 269. The required run rate was 13.45 from ball one. It was a mathematical mountain, demanding blind aggression from the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa walked out to open the batting. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took the new ball.

Gambhir came out swinging, looking to set the tone immediately. He slashed Bhuvneshwar over point for a boundary on the third ball of the first over. But the pressure was simply too immense to pace an innings.

In the second over, Dale Steyn steamed in at 150 kmph. Gambhir tried to step out and hit him over mid-off, but Steyn followed him with a sharp, rising delivery aimed at the ribs. Gambhir awkwardly fended it away, taking the splice of the bat. Warner ran in from short cover and took a diving catch.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Harsha Bhogle:"Caught! Gambhir goes early! Steyn with the extra pace and bounce, and the KKR captain is walking back for 8. The mountain just got steeper."

Manish Pandey walked in at number three. Robin Uthappa, carrying his incredible tournament form, refused to back down. He took on Ishant Sharma in the third over, hitting him for three exquisite boundaries. Uthappa reached a rapid fifty off just 28 balls, playing beautiful, textbook cricket shots while the required rate continued to climb.

In the sixth over, Siddanth introduced his spinners. Amit Mishra flighted the ball perfectly. Pandey, trying to hit against the spin, mistimed a slog-sweep straight into the hands of David Warner at deep mid-wicket. Score: 65 for 2.

Yusuf Pathan arrived, tasked with doing the impossible. He hit Karn Sharma for a massive six over long-on in the seventh over, briefly igniting the KKR fans. However, in the eighth over, Amit Mishra struck again. He bowled a perfectly disguised googly that spun back sharply. Pathan played for the leg-break, missed completely, and was bowled through the gate. Score: 80 for 3.

The middle overs became a chokehold. Uthappa fought a lone, brilliant battle at one end, but the sheer volume of runs required meant every new batsman had to hit out immediately. Suryakumar Yadav tried to sweep Karn Sharma in the eleventh over but was struck plumb in front of middle stump. LBW. Score: 105 for 4.

In the thirteenth over, the resistance finally broke. Uthappa, exhausted and desperate, tried to clear the long-on boundary against Dale Steyn. He didn't get enough elevation, and Siddanth took a comfortable, reverse-cup catch on the boundary rope. Uthappa departed for a valiant 72. Score: 120 for 5.

Shakib Al Hasan walked out to the middle.

Siddanth immediately brought himself into the attack for the fifteenth over. He marked his run-up, his eyes locked onto the Bangladeshi all-rounder.

14.1 Siddanth ran in and delivered a brutal, 152 kmph bouncer aimed straight at the throat. Shakib, rushed for pace and completely cramped for room, instinctively threw his hands up to protect his face. The ball took the glove and popped up softly to Naman Ojha behind the stumps.

Siddanth didn't celebrate. He just offered Shakib a cold, silent stare as the batsman walked back to the pavilion. Score: 135 for 6.

Andre Russell walked in next, managing to hit two massive sixes off Amit Mishra before holing out to deep mid-wicket in the sixteenth over. Score: 155 for 7.

The tail was exposed. In the seventeenth over, Piyush Chawla tried to play a ramp shot against Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but a perfect, dipping knuckleball crashed into his off-stump. Score: 162 for 8.

Siddanth returned for the eighteenth over to finish the job.

18.2 A 148 kmph in-swinging yorker castled Umesh Yadav. Score: 168 for 9.

18.4 Morne Morkel faced a toe-crushing yorker that he couldn't get his bat down to in time. The middle stump was uprooted, sending the bails flying into the night sky.

$$COMMENTARY BOX - MATCH FINISH$$

Ravi Shastri:"BOWLED HIM! The Sunrisers Hyderabad are the 2014 IPL Champions! A comprehensive, completely dominant victory by 98 runs! They were tactically perfect all season, and tonight, they unleashed pure, unadulterated carnage."

Harsha Bhogle:"An unbelievable performance. Siddanth Deva led from the front with a record-breaking century, and the bowlers executed the defense flawlessly. The Eagle has conquered Bangalore!"

The SRH players rushed onto the pitch in absolute jubilation. Siddanth remained calm, shaking hands with the umpires and making a point to walk over and shake hands with Gautam Gambhir and the KKR team. Whatever was said on the pitch, ended on the pitch.

$$POST-MATCH PRESENTATION$$

The presentation stage was set up in the middle of the Chinnaswamy outfield. Gold confetti littered the grass. Siddanth stood next to Ravi Shastri, holding the Man of the Match trophy and wearing the Orange Cap.

Ravi Shastri:"Siddanth, an absolute masterclass tonight. 102 not out off 24 balls. The fastest century in IPL history. But we have to ask about what happened in the 15th over. Things got incredibly heated out there with Shakib and Gautam. What sparked that fiery altercation?"

"It's a high-pressure final, Ravi bhai," Siddanth said smoothly, defusing the situation for the cameras. "Emotions run high. Shakib is a fierce competitor, Gautam is a passionate captain who fiercely defends his players, and I desperately want to win for my franchise. Sometimes adrenaline takes over and things are said in the heat of the moment. But we are professionals. What happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch. I have massive respect for both of them."

Ravi Shastri:"A very diplomatic answer! But you certainly let your bat do the talking right after that. 34 runs off the over."

"I just saw the ball well," Siddanth downplayed it effortlessly. "The pitch was excellent for hitting through the line. The bowlers gave me the lengths, and I just executed the shots. I have to give credit to Davey at the other end. He kept me grounded and focused."

Ravi Shastri:"Well, you executed them perfectly. You've led this team with absolute brilliance. Your third IPL trophy, Siddanth. Go celebrate with your team."

"Thank you, Ravi."
