Ravi Shastri:"A very good evening from the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata! The atmosphere here is absolutely electric. Welcome to Qualifier 1 of the 2014 Indian Premier League. It is the table-toppers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, taking on the explosive Kings XI Punjab. The winner books a direct ticket to the grand finale!"
Harsha Bhogle:"It's the clash of contrasting philosophies, Ravi. The unstoppable batting force of Punjab against the immovable bowling object of Hyderabad. The pitch today looks like a traditional Eden Gardens beauty—hard, true bounce, and lightning-fast outfield. There is also a significant dew factor expected later in the evening."
Ravi Shastri:"Which makes the toss crucial. I can see Siddanth Deva and George Bailey walking out to the center with the match referee. Let's head down for the toss."
The roar of the Kolkata crowd was deafening, a wall of sound that rivaled even the Hyderabad home matches. Siddanth stood in his orange jersey, completely relaxed, flipping the coin in his hand. George Bailey, the ever-smiling Punjab captain, stood opposite him.
"Tails," Bailey called as the coin went up.
It landed on Heads.
Ravi Shastri:"Siddanth, you've won the toss in this high-pressure Qualifier. What are you doing?"
"We're going to bowl first, Ravi bhai," Siddanth said smoothly into the microphone.
Ravi Shastri:"Bowling first in a big knockout game. Are you backing the dew factor, or backing your bowlers to restrict them?"
"A bit of both," Siddanth replied, looking perfectly grounded. "Eden Gardens has always been a great chasing ground, and the dew will definitely help the ball skid on nicely in the second innings. But primarily, we back our bowling unit to do the job upfront. We've made one change today Ishant Sharma comes in for Karn Sharma. We want to utilize that early bounce."
Ravi Shastri:"Excellent. Good luck. George, you would have bowled first too?"
"Yeah, definitely," Bailey smiled. "The dew is a concern. But it's a great wicket, and our boys have been striking the ball beautifully. We just need to put a massive total on the board now. We are going in unchanged."
Ravi Shastri:"The news from the center—SRH have won the toss and inserted KXIP to bat. Grab your popcorn, folks, this is going to be a cracker!"
Siddanth led his team out onto the pristine outfield. The floodlights illuminated the stadium perfectly. He set an attacking field for Virender Sehwag and Manan Vohra, placing a slip and a gully for Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Bhuvneshwar started his run-up for the opening over. He hit the seam perfectly on his first delivery, pitching it on a length and swinging it away late as Sehwag let it pass.
Unbothered, Sehwag stepped into the second ball, throwing his hands at a fuller delivery and slashing it over point for a boundary.
Bhuvneshwar pulled his length back slightly for the third, which Sehwag punched through the covers for two runs.
After defending a tight in-swinger on the fourth ball, Sehwag went entirely on the attack. He stepped out to a wider delivery, carving it beautifully over extra cover for a massive six, before tapping the final ball down to third man for a single
. The strike was rotated, putting Vohra at the striker's end for the next over.
COMMENTARY BOX - OVER 1
Harsha Bhogle:"Thirteen runs off the first over! Virender Sehwag has come out with absolute intent today. He is not letting Bhuvneshwar settle at all."
Dale Steyn took the ball from the pavilion end for the second over. He steamed in at 148 kmph for his first delivery, forcing an inside edge onto Vohra's pads for a dot ball.
Steyn immediately banged the second ball in short, but Vohra was ready, pulling it fiercely in front of square for a boundary.
Steyn followed up with a searing yorker that Vohra managed to dig out, scrambling for a quick single to put Sehwag back on strike.
Facing his first ball from Steyn, Sehwag slashed hard at a length delivery outside off; the ball flew off the thick outside edge, clearing the slip cordon for another boundary.
The assault continued relentlessly. Siddanth rotated his bowlers, bringing in Ishant Sharma in the fourth over to extract bounce, but Sehwag and Vohra were in a punishing mood.
They treated the good balls with respect but ruthlessly dispatched anything slightly off-target.
Ishant's first over went for 14 runs. Bhuvneshwar's third over went for 12.
The Punjab openers were dismantling the best bowling attack in the tournament. By the end of the powerplay, the scoreboard painted a dominant picture.
COMMENTARY BOX - END OF POWERPLAY
Ravi Shastri:"What an incredible display of batting! 62 for no loss at the end of the powerplay. Kings XI Punjab are absolutely flying! Siddanth Deva looks calm, but he knows this game is running away from him very quickly."
Harsha Bhogle:"It's the fearless approach we talked about, Ravi. They haven't let Steyn or Bhuvneshwar dictate terms. Sehwag is batting on 38 off just 18 balls. The Sunrisers desperately need a wicket here."
Siddanth stood at mid-off, tossing the ball from hand to hand. With the powerplay field restrictions lifted, he pushed four fielders back to the boundary—long-on, long-off, deep mid-wicket, and deep square leg.
He didn't panic. The analytics he had studied were clear. Punjab attacked the pacers in the powerplay, but they occasionally struggled to rotate the strike against disciplined spin in the middle overs. He threw the ball to Amit Mishra for the seventh over.
Mishra tossed up a beautiful leg-break to Vohra, which dipped and turned away.
Vohra defended it carefully before pushing a flatter delivery on middle stump down to long-on for a single.
Sehwag tried to step out on the third ball, but Mishra saw him coming and fired it down the leg side; Naman Ojha whipped the bails off in a flash, but Sehwag had grounded his back foot just in time.
After driving the fourth ball straight to extra cover for no run, Sehwag misread a quick googly, taking an inside edge onto his pads. He managed to punch the final ball down to long-off for a single, rotating the strike and putting Vohra back in the firing line for the next over.
COMMENTARY BOX - OVER 7
Harsha Bhogle:"Just two runs off the over! Brilliant control from Amit Mishra. That is exactly what the captain ordered to stem the run flow."
Siddanth decided it was time to introduce himself into the attack for the eighth over. He marked his run-up.
On the very first delivery, instead of his express pace, Siddanth rolled his fingers over the seam, delivering a 125 kmph cutter that gripped the dry Eden Gardens surface.
Vohra was completely early on his drive, chipping it softly into the air. Kane Williamson, stationed at short cover, dove forward and took a brilliant low catch.
COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET
Ravi Shastri:"CAUGHT! The captain strikes immediately! A perfectly disguised cutter, the pace taken right off. Vohra couldn't check his shot, and Sunrisers have the breakthrough they desperately needed. KXIP are 64 for 1!"
Glenn Maxwell, the most feared batsman of the tournament, walked out to the middle. The stadium buzzed with anticipation.
Siddanth greeted Maxwell with a sharp, 145 kmph delivery aimed right at the ribcage, forcing him to defend awkwardly off the back foot.
Siddanth then went wide outside off stump, taking the pace off again; Maxwell reached for it and missed completely.
Another wide, slower delivery followed, which Maxwell tried to reverse sweep but failed to connect.
Finally, on the fifth ball, Siddanth pitched it on a length on middle stump. Maxwell pushed it to mid-on and scrambled for a quick single to get off the mark.
Sehwag solidly defended the final ball of the over, keeping the strike for the next.
The eagle was beginning to circle its prey. Over the next two overs, Mishra and Siddanth bowled beautifully in tandem, conceding only 9 runs. The run rate, which had been over 10 during the powerplay, was steadily dropping.
In the tenth over, Siddanth brought Dale Steyn back into the attack. He had promised Steyn a crack at Maxwell, but Sehwag was on strike for the first delivery.
Steyn steamed in and unleashed a vicious, 148 kmph bouncer aimed straight at the badge on Sehwag's helmet. Sehwag instinctively tried to hook it, but the ball got big on him. The top edge flew high into the night sky toward fine leg. Bhuvneshwar Kumar settled underneath it and took a comfortable catch.
COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET
Harsha Bhogle:"Steyn strikes! The raw pace hurries Sehwag, and the dangerous opener is walking back. This is a brilliant fightback from the Sunrisers. They are tearing through the Punjab innings!"
David Miller walked out to join Maxwell.
Steyn greeted him with a searing yorker on off stump, which Miller quickly dug out.
After defending a hard length delivery, Miller flicked the fourth ball to deep square leg for a single, bringing Maxwell on strike.
Siddanth moved from mid-off to short mid-wicket.
Steyn ran in with absolute fury. He pitched it short of a length, angled into the body at a staggering 150 kmph.
Maxwell attempted to play his trademark pull shot, but the pace was simply too much. He was late. The ball rushed onto him, taking the splice of the bat and lobbing gently toward short mid-wicket. Siddanth didn't even have to move, taking the simplest of catches.
COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET
Ravi Shastri:"GOT HIM! Dale Steyn, you absolute beauty! He removes the Big Show! He rushed him for pace, absolutely hurried him. Siddanth Deva takes the catch, and the Sunrisers are ecstatic! Punjab are collapsing here!"
George Bailey walked in, and Steyn finished the over with a dot ball. A double-wicket maiden for the South African legend.
The momentum had completely shifted. The explosive start was a distant memory. Siddanth and Mishra resumed their operation, squeezing the scoring zones, setting traps, and forcing the batsmen to hit towards the longer boundaries.
In the thirteenth over, Amit Mishra tossed up a googly to George Bailey. Bailey tried to sweep but missed it entirely. The ball crashed into his pads, resulting in a plumb LBW. The score was 92 for 4.
Miller was still there, struggling to find his timing against the disciplined bowling. In the fifteenth over, Siddanth brought Bhuvneshwar back.
After Miller failed to reach a wide yorker on the first delivery, Bhuvneshwar bowled a brilliant knuckleball on the second. Miller swung wildly and edged it. Naman Ojha dove to his right, taking a sharp catch.
COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET
Harsha Bhogle:"Killer Miller is gone! Another one bites the dust! The knuckleball completely deceives him. Sunrisers Hyderabad are putting on a bowling masterclass here at Eden Gardens."
From 62 for 0 in 6 overs, Kings XI Punjab had spectacularly collapsed to 98 for 5 in 15 overs.
The death overs were an absolute procession. Siddanth and Steyn executed their yorkers flawlessly. Wriddhiman Saha managed to hit a couple of boundaries, but the tailenders had no answer to the pace and accuracy.
In the eighteenth over, Siddanth uprooted Akshar Patel's middle stump with a 149 kmph in-swinging yorker.
In the nineteenth over, Steyn picked up his third and fourth wickets, bowling Mitchell Johnson with a full, straight delivery, and getting Rishi Dhawan caught at deep point.
The innings concluded at 128 for 8.
COMMENTARY BOX - INNINGS BREAK
Ravi Shastri:"What an incredible turnaround! From 62 for no loss in the powerplay to 128 for 8 at the end of 20 overs. Kings XI Punjab scored just 66 runs in their last 14 overs! That is the lethal eagle strike of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in full effect."
Harsha Bhogle:"Sunil Gavaskar's words rings true tonight, Ravi. Bowlers win you tournaments. Dale Steyn was breathtaking, finishing with 4 for 20. Siddanth Deva took 2 for 24, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Amit Mishra were economical. 129 is not going to be enough on this pitch with the dew coming in."
Inside the SRH dressing room, the mood was calm and clinical. There was no over-the-top celebration. They had executed the plan perfectly.
"Brilliant job, boys," Tom Moody said, looking at the white board. "We choked them out. Steyn, unbelievable spell. Now, the dew is already settling on the outfield. The ball is going to skid nicely. Davey, Shikhar, take your time in the first three overs. Let the ball come to you. Once you have the pace of the pitch, finish it clinically. No unnecessary risks."
Siddanth sat in his chair, taking off his bowling spikes. "They will try to attack with Mitchell Johnson early. Don't give him any cheap wickets. If they bring spin, rotate the strike. We have plenty of time."
David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan padded up. They walked out to the middle, greeted by a slightly subdued Kolkata crowd that had witnessed the dramatic collapse.
Mitchell Johnson took the new ball for Punjab, charging in and hurling it at 145 kmph. Dhawan solidly defended a back-of-a-length delivery to start the chase.
On the second ball, Johnson pitched it fuller; Dhawan leaned in and drove it past mid-off for a beautiful boundary.
After ducking easily under a sharp bouncer on the third delivery, Dhawan clipped a leg-stump ball to square leg for a single.
Warner faced the final two deliveries of the over, leaving a wide ball outside off alone before defending a straight delivery back down the pitch.
Sandeep Sharma bowled the second over. He tried to swing the ball, but the heavy dew made the ball wet and difficult to grip. It didn't swing nearly as much as it had in the first innings.
Warner and Dhawan capitalized on this immediately. They played risk-free cricket, putting the bad balls away and rotating the strike effortlessly. By the end of the powerplay, SRH were 45 for no loss, completely in control of the chase.
In the eighth over, Akshar Patel was introduced into the attack. He started with a flat, quick delivery. Dhawan stepped out and tried to hit it over long-on, but the ball skidded through faster than he expected. It took the inside half of the bat and went straight into the hands of George Bailey at mid-wicket.
COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET
Harsha Bhogle:"A wicket against the run of play! Dhawan falls trying to accelerate. A soft dismissal, but SRH are still in a very commanding position at 58 for 1."
Kane Williamson walked out to bat at number three. Known for his textbook technique and calm demeanor, he was the perfect player for this situation. He seamlessly tapped his first ball from Patel to long-off for a comfortable single.
Williamson and Warner completely shut the door on any Punjab comeback hopes. They milked the spinners for singles, capitalized on the wet ball when the pacers returned, and steadily brought the target down.
Warner reached his half-century in the fourteenth over with a crisp boundary through the covers. He briefly raised his bat to the dugout, where Siddanth and the rest of the team applauded.
By the sixteenth over, the required runs were in single digits. Glenn Maxwell was handed the ball to bowl his part-time off-spin.
Maxwell bowled a short delivery to start the over. Williamson rocked back and cut it past point for a boundary, before driving a flighted delivery to long-off for a single.
With only a few runs left to win, Warner faced a flighted delivery on his pads. He went down on one knee and swept it powerfully over the deep square leg boundary for a massive six.
The stadium erupted as the ball landed in the stands. The Sunrisers Hyderabad had successfully chased down the target with 27 balls to spare.
COMMENTARY BOX - MATCH FINISH
Ravi Shastri:"And that is it! David Warner finishes it off in style! Sunrisers Hyderabad march straight into the IPL 2014 Final! What an absolutely clinical, professional performance from the Orange Army today."
Harsha Bhogle:"They were brilliant in every department. After that early onslaught by Sehwag, they didn't panic. The bowlers clawed their way back incredibly, and then the top three batsmen finished the job without breaking a sweat. Siddanth Deva didn't even have to put his pads on tonight."
The SRH players jogged onto the field to congratulate Warner and Williamson. Siddanth shook hands with George Bailey and the rest of the Punjab team, keeping his demeanor respectful. There was no excessive celebration; they all knew the real job was still waiting in the final.
POST-MATCH PRESENTATION
The presentation podium was set up near the pitch. Ravi Shastri held the microphone, surrounded by the sponsor hoardings.
"Ladies and gentlemen, a commanding victory for the Sunrisers Hyderabad to book their place in the final. To begin the presentations, I'd like to call upon tonight's Man of the Match, for his magnificent spell of 4 for 20, Dale Steyn!"
Steyn walked up to the podium, looking exhausted but thrilled. He accepted the trophy with a smile.
Ravi Shastri:"Dale, what a spell. When Punjab were flying at 62 for no loss, how did you turn it around?"
"It was just about sticking to the plan, Ravi," Steyn said. "Sid came to me and told me exactly what lengths we needed to hit. We knew Maxwell and Miller would come hard, but the pitch had enough pace and carry to keep us in the game if we bowled aggressively. Getting Sehwag and Maxwell definitely shifted the momentum."
Ravi Shastri:"You look as hungry as ever. Congratulations on reaching the final."
"Thank you," Steyn nodded, walking back to his team.
Ravi Shastri:"And now, the winning captain, Siddanth Deva. Siddanth, your team goes straight to the final. Your thoughts on today's performance?"
Siddanth stepped up, looking relaxed in his training kit.
"I'm incredibly proud of the bowling unit today, Ravi bhai," Siddanth said, his voice calm and composed. "To get hit for 62 in the powerplay and then restrict them to 128 requires immense character and discipline. Dale was exceptional, and Bhuvi and Mishy bhai executed their roles perfectly in the middle overs."
Ravi Shastri:"The run chase looked like a walk in the park. You didn't even need to bat."
"That's exactly how we want it," Siddanth smiled slightly. "Davey and Shikhar gave us a great start, and Kane is just pure class in these situations. The dew made the pitch beautiful for batting in the second half, and they ensured there were no hiccups."
Ravi Shastri:"You've got a few days off before the big final. How will the team prepare?"
"We'll rest, recover, and watch Qualifier 2 to see who we face," Siddanth replied. "The job isn't done yet."
Ravi Shastri:"Well played today, Siddanth. We will see you in the final."
Siddanth thanked him and walked back towards his team. The eagle had successfully swooped down and eliminated its strongest challenger. Now, only one game remained.
