Chapter 768 - THE NATION’S EMBRACE

The humid August air of New Delhi hung over the Indira Gandhi International Airport, but the heat gave way to national euphoria.

The Air India Boeing 777, chartered to bring the 2024 Paris Olympic contingent home, kissed the tarmac. Before the jet engines began to spool down, a pair of airport fire trucks flanked the aircraft and gave a water salute. The arcs of water caught the morning sun and cast a rainbow over the fuselage.

India had not just returned from Paris; they had returned as conquerors.

Twenty-three medals. Seven Gold, eight Silver, and eight Bronze. It was a result that broke the old history of Indian Olympic sports.

As the cabin doors opened, the roar from outside flooded into the aircraft. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Delhi Police had deployed extra battalions to hold back the crowd gathered outside Terminal 3. Tens of thousands of fans, draped in the tricolor, were beating traditional dhols, dancing, and chanting the names of athletes who, a month prior, had been unknown to the public.

Sanjali, the Gold medalist from Jharkhand, stepped out of the aircraft door. She looked down at the red carpet, the flashing cameras, and the politicians waiting with garlands of marigolds.

She gripped the gold medal against her chest, overwhelmed. Eight years ago, she had been shooting bamboo arrows in a village courtyard. Now the capital had stopped to welcome her.

Pawan Kumar, the towering Wrestling Gold medalist from Haryana, walked out behind her, letting out a roar of joy and waving to the crowd on the tarmac.

The athletes were ushered through the VIP corridors, bypassing customs, and loaded into secured, air-conditioned buses. The convoy, escorted by police sirens, carved a path through the streets of New Delhi toward the most guarded address in the country.

7 Lok Kalyan Marg. The official residence of the Prime Minister of India.

---

The green lawns of the Prime Minister's residence were quiet. The chaos of the Delhi streets stayed outside the security walls.

White canopies stood across the grass, shading round tables draped in linen. A breakfast had been laid out: Gujarati dhokla, Punjabi chole bhature, South Indian idlis, and platters of fruit and Indian sweets.

The twenty-three medalists, in their white and blue Indian Olympic blazers, stood near the tables. Despite what they had done on the mats, tracks, and ranges of Paris, they looked nervous, adjusting their collars and gripping their medals.

A silence fell over the lawn as the wooden doors of the residence opened.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a white kurta and a peach Nehru jacket, walked out onto the grass, hands folded in a Namaste.

The athletes stood at attention and returned the greeting.

Modi smiled and walked into the group of athletes, and the tension eased.

He walked straight up to Neeraj Chopra, the back-to-back Javelin Gold medalist.

"Neeraj bhai," Modi smiled, grasping the athlete's hand. "You have made the spear the official weapon of India. Two consecutive Golds! But tell me the truth... what did they feed you in Paris? Where is the churma? You look like you have lost weight eating all that continental food."

The athletes around them burst into laughter.

"Sir, the food was actually perfect," Neeraj grinned, relaxing. "We didn't have to eat the village food. We had our own desi chefs in our camp. Plenty of ghee and protein, sir."

"Ah, the famous Nexus camp," Modi noted.

The Prime Minister moved through the crowd. He stopped in front of Pawan Kumar, the Haryana wrestler who had bullied his European opponent for the Gold, and Amit, the bruised, bandaged Bronze medalist boxer.

Modi, shorter than both of them, looked up with theatrical intimidation.

"Looking at the size of your shoulders, I am very glad I am in politics and not in the wrestling ring," Modi joked, patting Pawan's bicep. The wrestler blushed and ducked his head. "You boys eat mountains for breakfast. Amit, your eye looks terrible, but that Bronze medal looks beautiful. You fought like a lion for the flag."

"Thank you, sir," Amit mumbled, touching his bandaged eyebrow.

Modi then turned to Meera Devi, the weightlifter from rural Manipur.

"Meera ji," Modi said, his voice lower. "From the hills of Manipur to lifting the heaviest weights in Paris. You carried the pride of the entire Northeast on your shoulders. A flawless Gold."

Meera bowed her head, tears in her eyes, overwhelmed by the recognition.

The Prime Minister stepped back and gestured for the athletes to sit. He took a microphone from an aide and addressed them as they ate.

"Today, 1.4 billion people are holding their heads high because of your sweat, your blood, and your unyielding dedication," Modi announced, in the cadence of his public speeches, even here.

"The government recognizes the life-changing sacrifices you have made," Modi continued, his tone shifting back to business. "It is our duty to ensure that your futures are secure. Therefore, the Central Government is honored to announce an official cash reward for your historic achievements in Paris."

The Prime Minister raised his hand and listed the figures.

"For every athlete who has brought home the Gold, the Central Government awards ₹75 Lakhs," Modi declared. "For every Silver medalist, ₹50 Lakhs. And for every Bronze medalist, a reward of ₹30 Lakhs."

The athletes clapped, but not thinking much of cash reward, they got a lot of money because NEXUS with all the activities they conduct every year.

The luncheon went on for another hour, then the athletes were ushered out to prepare for their flights home.

---

Within two hours of the banquet ending, the press wing of the Prime Minister's Office released edited video clips of the interaction on social media.

The clips showed Modi joking with Neeraj Chopra about the churma, looking intimidated by the wrestlers.

The internet, focused on sports and patriotism for three weeks, snapped back to a political meme war.

Opposition IT cells and ruling party defenders clashed online, using the Olympic athletes as ammunition.

@DesiPolitico: Look at the Supreme Leader trying to steal the credit! 😂 The man literally did NOTHING to fund these athletes! Siddanth Deva and Nexus paid for their training, their food, and their flights, and Modi Ji swoops in for a photo-op! #CreditChor

@BJP_Warrior: Cry more, opposition! PM Modi personally motivated these athletes before they left for Paris! His 'Khelo India' vision laid the foundation! Siddanth Deva is just contributing to the Vishwaguru's masterplan! 🇮🇳🔥🚩

@CongInsider: "Vishwaguru's masterplan"?! Bro, the sports federations couldn't even arrange proper shoes for the archers! Siddanth Deva literally bypassed the corrupt government federations and bought a mansion in Paris with his own money! Modi is a Camera-jeevi! 📸💀

@Bhakti_Movement: Siddanth Deva is a true nationalist! He is working WITH the government to build the nation! The opposition is just jealous that the PM has such a great relationship with our Olympic heroes! Look at how happy the athletes are! 🦁🔥

@LeftWingTruth: Ah yes, ₹75 Lakhs for a Gold medal from the Central Government. Meanwhile, the athletes were spending ₹8 Lakhs a year on proper elite nutrition which Nexus had to pay for. The Central reward is peanuts compared to what Nexus invested! 🥜📉

@Saffron_Shield: Peanuts?! The PM just gave them massive, tax-free cash rewards! The government also provides them with top-tier security and national honors! The Left always finds a way to complain when India wins! 🇮🇳🤫

@MemeNeta_007: Athletes win 23 medals funded entirely by a billionaire cricketer.

Modi Ji putting on his best kurta for the photoshoot: "Our hard work has finally paid off, brothers and sisters." 😭📸😂

@RightWing_Roar: Deva and Modi Ji are the two pillars of modern India! One dominates the sports world, the other dominates the geopolitical world! Stop trying to create a rift between them! They are a united front! 🚩🤝🏆

@Troll_Sarkar: I love how the wrestlers looked like they could physically pick the PM up and throw him over the lawn canopy. Pawan Kumar is an absolute unit! 🤼‍♂️💪😂

@Anti_Propaganda99: Camera-jeevi strikes again! He made sure the lighting was perfect before he went to shake hands with Neeraj Chopra! The PR machinery of this government works harder than the actual athletes! 🎥🤡

@Nationalist_Voice: The opposition leaders are hiding in their mansions while the PM is eating breakfast with champions! Where is your supreme leader today? Probably vacationing in Europe! 😂✈️

@Satire_Central_IN: Indian Olympic Committee: "We have no budget."

Siddanth Deva: "Here is 500 Crores."

Modi Ji: "Look what we have achieved together!" 💀💳

@Desi_Chanakya: The reality is, public-private partnerships are the future of Indian sports. The government handles the administration, and billionaires like Deva handle the high-performance execution. It is a win-win for the country. 📈🤝

@BJP_Commander: Do not forget that PM Modi personally called the athletes when they lost! He supports them in victory and defeat! A true leader of the masses! 🚩🙏

@Liberal_Tears_Taster: The opposition is having a meltdown because India is winning! 23 medals! The country is rising and they can't handle the positivity! Jai Hind! 🇮🇳🔥

@FactCheck_India: While Nexus funded the elite training, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) did provide the initial grassroots platforms for many of these athletes before 2016. It is a combined effort, not just a single corporate entity. 📝🔍

@Meme_Mantri: Neeraj Chopra looking at the PM when asked about the churma: "Sir, Siddanth Deva would literally murder me if I ate sugar before the finals." 😭🎂🚫

@Sarcastic_Babu: The best part of the video is Amit the boxer just standing there with a bruised, swollen eye, nodding politely while the politicians talk. The man just wants to go to sleep. 🥊🤕😂

@DesiPolitico: Let's wait for the state rewards. The Chief Ministers are going to try and out-bid the Prime Minister to claim the athletes as their own regional trophies! The political auction begins! 💰🏛️

@CongInsider: At least the state governments actually give them government jobs! The center just gives a photo-op and a speech! 🗣️📉

@Bhakti_Movement: State rewards are funded by taxpayers anyway! It is all Indian money going to Indian heroes! Stop dividing the country based on states! 🇮🇳🤝

@LeftWingTruth: Siddanth Deva watching this political circus from his hotel room in Sri Lanka, knowing he literally bought the medals with his own wallet: ☕😎

@Saffron_Shield: The PM's aura is unmatched! The athletes were glowing in his presence! A historic day for Bharat! 🚩✨

@MemeNeta_007: Politicians fighting over credit.

Siddanth Deva checking his bank balance: "Whatever, I'm buying the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics next." 💳🇺🇸💀

@Desi_Liberal: If Deva ran for Prime Minister tomorrow, he would sweep the elections. He actually delivers results instead of empty promises. 🗳️👑

@RightWing_Roar: Deva is the King of Sports, Modi Ji is the King of the Nation! Two legends! 🚩👑

@Troll_Sarkar: I am just here for the memes. The political IT cells fighting over archery and weightlifting is the funniest thing to happen this month. 🍿😂

@Polity_Nerd: The PR battle is tied. The PM got the viral video, but the internet knows the truth about Nexus. The true winner today is the Indian sporting ecosystem. 🏛️📈🏆

---

While the politicians fought online in the capital, the celebrations were getting ready in the heartlands.

The athletes boarded domestic flights and left New Delhi for their home states.

Haryana (The Land of Muscle)

The moment the flight carrying Pawan Kumar (Wrestling Gold) and Amit (Boxing Bronze) touched down in Chandigarh, Haryana went berserk.

This was the heartland of Indian combat sports.

Pawan and Amit were not met by buses. They were met by over fifty John Deere tractors, covered in orange marigolds and tricolor flags. Hundreds of traditional dhols filled the air.

The crowd lifted Pawan off his feet and put him on the hood of the lead tractor. He wore a turban, the gold medal against his chest. Women from his village threw flower petals and gulal (colored powder) from the rooftops.

The procession crawled through Rohtak. Sweet shops gave out free jalebis as fans danced in the streets.

At the open-air stadium, the Chief Minister of Haryana took the stage.

"Haryana has always been the sword arm of India!" the Chief Minister roared into the microphone, the crowd going wild. "And today, our sons have brought the ultimate glory! The Government of Haryana is proud to announce a cash reward of ₹6 Crores for our Gold medalist, Pawan Kumar, along with a Class-I gazetted officer post! And ₹2.5 Crores for our brave Bronze medalist, Amit!"

The crowd roared. The state rewards dwarfed the central government's offering. Pawan and Amit's families, from farming households, were set for life.

Jharkhand (The Arrow's Flight)

A thousand kilometers east, Ranchi held its own festival.

Sanjali, the Archery Gold medalist, arrived to a traditional Santhal welcome.

Hundreds of tribal dancers in white and red sarees kicked up the red dust of the roads, beating mandar drums. Sanjali sat in an open-top jeep, tears on her face, as elders from her village — people who had watched her shoot bamboo arrows in the dirt — wept.

At the Morabadi Ground, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand addressed the crowd.

"Sanjali has pierced the heart of the world with her arrows!" the Chief Minister declared, his voice echoing over the drums. "She is the true pride of our tribal heritage! The Government of Jharkhand honors her flawless Gold with a cash reward of ₹3 Crores, a residential plot in Ranchi, and a senior police administrative post!"

Sanjali buried her face in her hands, overwhelmed. Her life, and the life of her village, had changed in a month.

Manipur (The Power of the Hills)

In the hills of the Northeast, Imphal was in celebration.

Meera Devi, the Weightlifting Gold medalist, was welcomed back with reverence. The traditional Pena (string instrument) played as she was draped in Manipuri shawls (Leirum Phee).

Meera had lifted a record weight, and the Northeast showed its pride.

The Chief Minister of Manipur, before a crowd of supporters, made the announcement.

"Meera has lifted the weight of our entire state on her shoulders," the Chief Minister announced. "The Government of Manipur is honored to award our Golden Girl a cash prize of ₹2 Crores, and she will be appointed as an Assistant Commissioner of Police!"

The homecomings ran across the country. The states had ensured the athletes would not have to worry about money again.

---

During the state felicitation ceremonies, broadcast live on regional and national television, the reality of the 2024 Olympic campaign was put in front of the public.

In Haryana, Pawan Kumar stood on the stage, a garland of money around his neck, and took the microphone from the Chief Minister.

The wrestler looked out at the crowd.

"I thank the government for this incredible reward," Pawan said, his tone serious. "But I must speak the truth today. Few years ago, I had no proper wrestling shoes. I had no protein. The federation was busy with politics. I was going to quit and work on a farm."

Pawan gripped the microphone.

"I am standing here with a Gold medal today because of one man, and one foundation," Pawan declared. "Siddanth Deva sir and the Nexus Sports Foundation found me. They took me out of the dirt. They paid for my coaches, my diet, and my flights. In Paris, they rented an entire estate so we didn't have to deal with the chaos of the Olympic village. This Gold medal belongs to the country, but it was forged entirely by the Nawab of Hyderabad."

The crowd in Rohtak went quiet for a second, then cheered the absent cricketer.

In Manipur, Meera Devi spoke plainly.

"Nexus gave me dignity," Meera stated. "They gave me a salary through the Nexus Sports Foundation before I even won a medal. They treated me like a professional superstar, not a beggar asking for funds. I owe my entire career to the vision of Siddanth Deva."

As the speeches went out across the country, the political meme war evaporated. The story shifted.

The public saw that the 23-medal haul was not a triumph of the government system. It was a corporate takeover of a broken sporting setup by a billionaire cricketer who hated losing.

Sports fans on the internet fell into awe.

---

@OlympicFanatic_IN: Listening to Pawan Kumar talk about the high-performance centers in Haryana... the sheer scale of the Nexus Sports Foundation is terrifying. Deva and Arjun Reddy treated the Olympics like a corporate hostile takeover and they conquered it. 🤼‍♂️🏢🔥

@TeluguBidda_99: ANNA IS NOT A MAN, HE IS AN EMPIRE! He was in Sri Lanka hitting boundaries while his athletes were on live TV calling him the architect of their Gold medals! The pride of Hyderabad is unmatched in human history! 💪👑🔥

@Sonia_Styles12: Meera Devi saying Nexus gave her dignity before she even won a medal... that broke me. Deva treats his athletes like royalty. He is the ultimate protector of Indian sports. We don't deserve him! 🏋️‍♀️🥺❤️

@MemeCentral_Desi: Indian Sports Federations: "We have no money, please compromise."

Siddanth Deva pulling out the black Nexus corporate card: "Buy the best equipment. Hire private chefs. Rent a mansion in Paris. Bring me the gold." 💀💳🥇

@TrackAndField_India: The athletes bypassing the politicians on stage to explicitly thank a cricketer for their Olympic medals is the most badass, cinematic thing I have ever seen. Loyalty cannot be bought; it is earned. 🏃‍♂️👏

@UK_Sports_Pundit: The case study of the Nexus Sports Foundation will be taught in sports management universities globally. A private corporate entity completely bypassing national bureaucracy to fund an elite, 23-medal Olympic pipeline. Siddanth Deva is a visionary. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🧠📈

@Virat_Army_Delhi: A true leader elevates everyone around him. Deva could have just bought a yacht with his billions, but he built wrestlers and archers instead. Supreme respect to the Warlord! 👑🤝🇮🇳

@WrestlingFan_Haryana: To hear our boy Pawan say he was going to quit and work on a farm before Nexus found him... thank God for Deva. Haryana owes a massive debt to the NSF. 🤼‍♂️🔥🙌

@Stats_Guy99: If you calculate the ROI (Return on Investment) of the NSF since 2016... they funded over 90% of the athletes who won the 23 medals in Paris. It is the most successful private sports venture in the history of the subcontinent. 📊💰

@BlueBleeders: Deva literally built a shadow empire of high performance. The athletes call it the "Nexus Bubble". No politicians, no PR stunts, just pure, cold execution. 🏢🥶

@Priya_Vlogs: I am watching all the felicitation speeches and every single athlete is crying when they mention Deva and Arjun Reddy. The emotional impact they have had on these kids from rural India is beautiful! 🌸😭❤️

@DesiSarcasm: Other countries: "Our government funds our Olympic dreams."

India: "Our angry billionaire cricket captain funds our Olympic dreams because he hates seeing us lose." 😂🥇

@TiredFastBowler: The discipline required to manage a global corporate foundation while simultaneously captaining the national cricket team... Deva's brain bats on a completely different pitch. 🧠⚙️

@Gamer_Boy007: Deva is literally operating like Bruce Wayne. He is a billionaire who uses his wealth to fight the corrupt system from the shadows and builds an army of highly trained warriors. 🦇🔥🎮

@CricCrazyJohn: The fact that Deva hasn't given a single interview or taken any credit publicly makes this even better. He let the athletes take the spotlight, and the athletes forced the spotlight onto him out of pure respect. 🤫🏆

@Hitman_Army_Mumbai: Putting all IPL and cricket rivalries aside... Siddanth Deva is a national treasure. What he has done for Olympic sports in India is phenomenal. Respect. 🇮🇳🤝

@HistoryBuff_IN: In fifty years, historians will look at the 2024 Paris Olympics and pinpoint the exact moment Siddanth Deva dragged Indian athletics into the modern era of high performance. 📜🏛️

@BCCI_Insider: The BCCI is honestly terrified. Deva wields more power and influence in Indian sports through his private foundation than the actual government federations do. He is untouchable. 🤫👑

@The_Master_Architect: The federations failed. The politicians talked. The Warlord acted. The empire of gold is built on execution, not promises. The revolution is officially televised. 👿🔥🥇
