"Grandmother."
She finally spoke, her voice choked and trembling, her eyes filled with tears that silently rolled down her cheeks.
Those long-buried memories flooded back like a tidal wave—
She remembers hiding behind the stove as a child, sneaking bites of sweet cakes, and her grandmother finding her but never scolding, only smiling and wiping her mouth;
Remembers getting a fever on a stormy night, and her grandmother carrying her ten miles through mud to the clinic;
Remembers being bullied in high school, her grandmother finding the school with a cane, standing silently at the classroom door yet enough to awe the whole room...
She was a foster granddaughter, an orphan brought into the family.
But her grandmother never treated her differently because of it.
She used all her strength throughout her life to hide her origins from her, giving her a complete family.
