Chapter 2 - WHEN MEMORIES FAIL

The next morning, the school halls felt impossibly crowded and yet painfully empty at the same time. Eliah's chest tightened with a strange kind of ache as she searched for Rin among the throng of students rushing to their classes. Her fingers nervously twisted the edges of the journal she had passed to Rin yesterday, the same journal filled with memories that felt like echoes of a life they'd lived together.

And there, at the far end of the corridor, was Rin. She was walking ahead, her steps purposeful, her face set in an expression that didn't invite recognition Eliah was a stranger passing by.

"Rin?" Eliah called out, her voice barely above a whisper, but it echoed oddly in the noisy hallway.

Rin stopped mid-step and slowly turned around. Her eyes scanned Eliah's face, but there was no spark, no flicker of familiarity. Instead, a polite, almost rehearsed smile curved her lips. "Hello. I don't think we've met."

Eliah's heart froze. "We did. Yesterday. I gave you this." She extended her hand instinctively, as if the journal might magically reappear. "You... you took it."

Rin's gaze flickered down to the empty air where the journal had been, then back to Eliah's face. "I think you're mistaken. I don't remember any of that."

Confusion twisted deep inside Eliah like a knife. "But—how? I'm sure you're Rin." She paused, swallowing the lump forming in her throat. "You smiled at me. You thanked me."

The smile on Rin's face wavered for just a heartbeat before she straightened. "I'm sorry if you're confused, but I'm not the person you think I am."

Eliah opened her mouth to protest, but no words came out. The system, which had once hummed quietly in her mind, ready to help decode Rin's actions and guide her, was now silent, dead air where answers should have been.

She watched as Rin turned away, slipping back into the crowd, her figure swallowed by a sea of students.

Eliah stood rooted, the weight of her confusion and disappointment settling heavily on her shoulders. The journal felt like a burning secret in her bag, a puzzle piece she couldn't fit anywhere.

She wandered to her locker, heart pounding as she tried to make sense of what had just happened. Was Rin really the same person? If not, then who was she? And why did that journal feel so important, so alive with memories that only they should know?

The silence of the system gnawed at her. Normally, it buzzed softly, providing hints and advice, but today it was mute. Had Rin's coldness somehow severed their connection?

Later that day, Eliah sat in the school courtyard, the journal spread open on her lap. Her fingers traced the familiar handwriting, loops and flourishes she had seen before, yet didn't recognize as her own. Each page was filled with thoughts and memories that tugged at her soul like a faint melody from a past life.

As she read, a strange sensation prickled at the back of her mind. The journal wasn't just a collection of memories,it was a message. Someone had written these words, hoping to reach her across a vast and tangled web of time and space.

But who?

The question lingered, unanswered.

Back in class, Eliah caught snippets of conversations that felt like pieces of a puzzle she was desperate to solve. Someone mentioned the system,a mysterious guide some students had whispered about, a digital consciousness that some claimed helped them unlock hidden potential.

Had Rin gotten one too? Or was the silence in her system something worse,an intentional blockade?

Days passed, but Rin continued to avoid her gaze and the journal's weight in Eliah's bag grew heavier. The distance between them was painful, like watching someone you love disappear through a fog you can't penetrate.

Yet, beneath it all, Eliah felt a persistent pull, like invisible threads tugging at her heart, refusing to let the connection fade.

One evening, as she sat on her bed, journal open and fingers trembling, the system finally stirred.

"You must be patient."The voice was soft, almost hesitant.

Eliah's breath caught. "Why is Rin acting like this? Why won't she remember?"

"Something is interfering. Someone else is watching. Trying to prevent the reunion."

The words sent a shiver down her spine.

"Who? Why?"

"Unknown. But the bond remains strong. You must find her before the interference grows."

Determined, Eliah decided to look for more clues. She retraced the moments before Rin handed her the journal, hoping for a missed detail, a hidden message.

At the school library, she found an old yearbook with photos that looked eerily familiar,Rin's face, but with subtle differences, as if time had rewritten her story.

And in one photo, barely visible, was a shadowy figure watching from the background.

Eliah's heart raced as she closed the book. Whoever that figure was, they were tied to the interference, to the silent system, to the forgotten memories.

She knew one thing for sure: the reunion was far from over. The fight for their love, for their souls intertwined across universes, had only just begun.
