Chapter 21 - Leaving Everything Behind

Far below them, Stonehaven continued to shine.

Unaware that five of its sons were about to leave.

Perhaps forever.

The wind swept across the hill.

Cold.

Relentless.

The promise they had made lingered between them.

A promise to return.

A promise to remain themselves.

A promise none of them truly knew if they could keep.

For a while, nobody moved.

The city lights flickered in the darkness below.

The streets looked peaceful.

Small.

Normal.

As if nothing extraordinary existed beyond the boundaries of Earth.

As if another world wasn't waiting beyond reality itself.

Matthew eventually checked his phone.

5:23 AM.

"He should be here."

The words felt heavier than expected.

Nobody replied.

Because there was nothing left to say.

Everything important had already been said.

The promises.

The fears.

The goodbyes.

Now only one thing remained.

Leaving.

Then...

A faint blue flash illuminated a distant section of the forest.

Gone almost immediately.

But all five saw it.

Dak exhaled slowly.

"Well..."

His usual grin didn't appear.

"I guess this is it."

Nobody laughed.

Nobody mocked him.

Because they all felt the same.

Zeven took one final look at Stonehaven.

At the city where he had spent eighteen years.

The city where he had laughed.

Fought.

Failed.

Grown.

The city where his family waited.

The city where his life had begun.

Then he turned away.

And started walking.

The others followed.

The forest welcomed them with silence.

Not ordinary silence.

Something deeper.

Something unnatural.

The deeper they walked, the quieter the world became.

No birds.

No insects.

No distant traffic.

Nothing.

Only the sound of their footsteps.

Even Dak noticed it.

"This place feels creepy."

Ozias nodded.

"More than usual."

The trees seemed taller than Zeven remembered.

The shadows darker.

The air heavier.

Every instinct in his body told him something was different.

Not dangerous.

Important.

As if the forest itself understood what was about to happen.

Eventually the clearing appeared.

The same clearing.

The same place where everything had begun.

For a moment, none of them stepped forward.

They simply stared.

Memories flooded back instantly.

The first meeting.

The confusion.

The disbelief.

The anger.

The fear.

The moment they learned the truth.

The moment their lives changed forever.

Dak broke the silence first.

"Feels smaller."

Matthew looked around.

Then shook his head.

"No."

Dak glanced at him.

Matthew stared at the clearing.

"We're bigger."

Silence followed.

Because he was right.

Months ago they had entered this clearing as ordinary teenagers.

Now?

They had survived training that should have killed them.

They had learned to manipulate Nexis.

They had awakened powers impossible by Earth's standards.

They had become something else.

Not Nexaris.

Not yet.

But no longer ordinary humans either.

The Vanguard stood waiting near the center of the clearing.

Seven figures.

Motionless.

Silent.

Watching.

Kaelen stood at the front.

His silver eyes reflected the fading stars.

The sight reminded Zeven of the first time they had met.

Back then Kaelen had seemed impossible.

Now...

He seemed terrifying.

Not because of his strength.

Because Zeven finally understood how much strength Kaelen had been hiding.

"You came."

Kaelen's voice broke the silence.

Dak rolled his eyes.

"You keep saying that like we had another option."

A faint smile appeared on Kaelen's face.

"You always have a choice."

The answer immediately killed Dak's joke.

Because it was true.

They could have stayed.

They could have refused.

They could have chosen comfort.

Normal lives.

Safety.

Yet none of them had.

Kaelen looked around the clearing.

"The first time we met."

The boys nodded.

Kaelen continued.

"This place isn't random."

Immediately, everyone paid attention.

"This clearing sits above one of Earth's remaining Nexis convergence points."

Ozias frowned.

"A what?"

"A place where the boundaries between worlds are weaker."

The boys exchanged looks.

Kaelen knelt and placed a hand on the ground.

"The worlds overlap here."

"The barrier is thinner."

"The distance is smaller."

Matthew frowned.

"I thought Nythara was another world."

"It is."

Kaelen replied.

"But worlds are not separated by distance."

The clearing became silent.

"They are separated by reality."

Those words sent chills down Zeven's spine.

Kaelen slowly stood.

His expression became serious.

Far more serious than usual.

For the first time, Zeven realized something.

Kaelen respected what was about to happen.

That alone was unsettling.

"Opening a pathway between worlds is not a power."

Kaelen's gaze moved across the group.

"It is a violation."

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Even the Vanguard behind him seemed more alert.

As if preparing for something dangerous.

The wind suddenly stopped.

Completely.

The entire forest froze.

The silence became absolute.

Then Kaelen raised his right hand.

And reality screamed.

The sound exploded through the clearing.

Not from the sky.

Not from the ground.

From everywhere.

A noise that seemed impossible.

Like glass shattering inside the air itself.

Dak immediately stumbled backward.

"What the hell was that?!"

Nobody answered.

Because something was happening.

The space above the clearing began to distort.

The air twisted.

Folded.

Bent inward.

The trees surrounding the clearing groaned violently.

Branches snapped.

Leaves tore free.

The ground trembled.

Birds exploded from distant sections of the forest.

Animals fled in every direction.

The world itself seemed to be resisting.

Fighting.

Rejecting what Kaelen was doing.

Yet he remained motionless.

His silver eyes burned brighter.

The Nexis pressure became overwhelming.

Dak dropped to one knee.

Ozias looked ready to collapse.

Even Matthew struggled.

Zeven clenched his teeth.

Every instinct in his body screamed at him to run.

Then the sky cracked.

A jagged fracture appeared in empty space.

Thin at first.

Barely visible.

Then wider.

And wider.

And wider.

Blue lightning erupted from the wound.

The fracture stretched upward.

Twenty meters.

Thirty.

Forty.

Growing larger with every second.

The clearing shook violently.

Reality fought back.

But reality was losing.

Finally...

The fracture opened.

And the boys saw another sky.

Three moons.

Silver clouds.

Unknown stars.

A horizon that did not belong to Earth.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody spoke.

Because for the first time...

Nythara was real.

Not a story.

Not a dream.

Not a possibility.

Real.

Kaelen lowered his hand.

The portal remained open.

Towering over the clearing like a wound carved into existence itself.

Then he turned toward them.

His expression unreadable.

"Once you cross."

Silence consumed the clearing.

"There is no return."

The words settled heavily upon them.

No return.

No Earth.

No Stonehaven.

No family.

Only the future.

Only Nythara.

Only the unknown.

Kaelen stepped toward the portal.

Then disappeared.

The other Vanguard followed.

One after another.

Until only the five remained.

The portal waited.

Silent.

Watching.

Almost alive.

Dak laughed nervously.

"If we're ruining our lives..."

A grin finally appeared.

"...let's do it together."

For the first time since leaving the hill, the others smiled.

Then Dak stepped forward.

And vanished.

Matthew followed.

Then Ozias.

Then Kael.

Until only Zeven remained.

The wolf pendant rested against his chest.

His fingers wrapped around it.

A gift from home.

A reminder.

A promise.

Behind him lay everything he had ever known.

Ahead of him lay everything he didn't.

Fear.

Power.

Nythara.

The Conclave.

The Trials.

The unknown.

Zeven took one final breath.

Then stepped forward.

And the world disappeared.
