Ficool

Chapter 45 - Chapter 45

The Dimensional Gate opened.

For the first time since its construction began, the colossal structure above Exegol fulfilled the purpose for which Darth Palpus had designed it. Five harvested stars supplied its power, their energy collected and compressed through an array of stellar harvesting stations before being directed into the gate's enormous reactor network. Rings of black metal rotated around the central aperture, while reality anchors activated one after another, stabilizing the space between dimensions.

Inside the control chamber, thousands of engineers watched their instruments with nervous anticipation. Scientists who had spent their entire lives studying the laws of physics stood beside Sith alchemists whose knowledge predated the Galactic Republic. Neither group entirely understood the other's work, yet together they had constructed a machine that challenged the boundaries of existence itself.

Palpus stood before the main observation window, his hands clasped behind his back.

He wore black robes beneath a long, dark coat, its surface reinforced with materials produced by the Matter Extractor. Ancient Sith symbols had been incorporated into the fabric, though their significance remained hidden from everyone except their creator. His eyes remained fixed on the gate.

Behind him, Emperor Palpatine watched the energy readings climb.

"How much longer?" the Emperor asked.

"The reactor network is stable. The reality anchors are functioning within acceptable tolerances, and the dimensional barrier is weakening." Palpus examined the final calculations. "We can initiate the crossing whenever you are ready."

Palpatine looked toward the immense structure.

"And where exactly will we emerge?"

"The destination is uncertain in the conventional sense. We have selected a reality whose physical laws resemble our own, but the dimensional coordinates are unstable. The gate will identify a viable point of entry before establishing the connection."

"An unknown universe."

"An unknown universe with unknown civilizations, unknown resources, and unknown threats."

Palpatine smiled.

"At last, something interesting."

Palpus turned toward him.

"Father, I recommend that we do not underestimate whatever lies beyond the gate. We have conquered our galaxy, defeated the Yuuzhan Vong, and eliminated Abeloth. None of those accomplishments guarantees that we will dominate another reality immediately."

The Emperor's expression became thoughtful.

"You believe there may be beings capable of challenging us?"

"I believe that assuming otherwise would be an act of stupidity."

Palpatine laughed quietly.

"Very well, my son. We shall proceed cautiously."

Palpus returned his attention to the control panel.

"Begin the activation sequence."

The order travelled throughout the facility.

Deep within the gate, reactors ignited. Energy rushed through conduits reinforced with quantum-crystalline materials, while the kyber arrays began converting the immense power into a controlled dimensional field.

The rings accelerated.

Space distorted.

A brilliant sphere formed at the center of the structure, its surface rippling like liquid glass. Beyond it, the engineers detected something resembling a star field, although the readings refused to remain consistent.

The dimensional barrier broke.

A doorway appeared.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the sensors began receiving information from the other side.

Radiation signatures.

Gravitational fluctuations.

Unidentified energy sources.

And something else.

A vast region of space filled with countless stars.

Palpus studied the readings.

"Interesting."

"What is it?" Palpatine asked.

"The destination appears to be a large galaxy. Its stellar density is considerably higher than the average density of our own galaxy's inhabited regions."

"An opportunity, then."

"Potentially."

Palpus activated a separate display.

"Send an unmanned probe through the gate."

A small reconnaissance drone detached from its launch platform and entered the dimensional aperture.

Its telemetry remained stable for eleven seconds.

Then the signal disappeared.

The engineers froze.

Palpus examined the final transmission.

The drone had not been destroyed.

Its signal had simply vanished.

He initiated another probe, this time equipped with improved dimensional communication systems and additional shielding.

It crossed the threshold.

The signal returned.

Weakly, but consistently.

Palpus smiled.

"Now we are getting somewhere."

He turned toward his father.

"Prepare the reconnaissance fleet."

Palpatine nodded.

"Let us see what awaits us."

The first Imperial vessels to cross the Dimensional Gate were not the mighty Extinguisher-class dreadnoughts or the enormous Xeyon-class Star Destroyers.

They were exploration ships.

Small by Imperial standards, but equipped with advanced sensors, defensive systems, and enough firepower to survive unexpected encounters.

Behind them followed several escort cruisers and a dedicated logistics vessel. Their mission was simple: establish a secure foothold, map the surrounding systems, and determine whether the new universe contained civilizations worth approaching.

Palpus accompanied the expedition aboard the Dementor, his personal flagship.

The vessel passed through the gate without difficulty.

For a moment, its sensors recorded nothing.

Then the stars appeared.

Palpus stood on the bridge, watching as the unknown galaxy filled the main display.

"Navigation?"

"Stable, my lord."

"Communications?"

"Operational."

"Dimensional connection?"

The chief engineer checked the readings.

"Stable, but maintaining the gate remotely will require considerable energy. We recommend establishing a local beacon before expanding operations."

"Do so."

The Dementor moved forward.

Its escorts spread into formation, their shields active and weapons ready.

Palpus studied the star charts as they developed.

There were thousands of inhabited systems within the initial scanning range. Some possessed technological signatures consistent with industrial civilizations. Others showed evidence of large-scale military activity.

One reading, however, attracted his attention.

A planet surrounded by an immense network of orbital installations.

Its surface was almost entirely covered in structures.

Factories.

Cities.

Military complexes.

Orbital platforms.

The planet's atmosphere contained unusually high levels of industrial pollutants, while its population density exceeded anything encountered in the Galactic Empire.

Palpus enlarged the image.

"What world is that?"

The navigation officer consulted the translated signal fragments.

"We have intercepted a transmission from the planet. The language is unfamiliar, but the translation matrix is making progress."

A few moments later, a series of words appeared.

TERRA. HOLY TERRA.

Palpus stared at the display.

Something about the name stirred his curiosity.

Then another transmission arrived.

It was heavily distorted, filled with religious declarations and references to an immortal ruler.

The translation system continued working.

Eventually, a title appeared.

THE EMPEROR OF MANKIND.

Palpus leaned forward.

"Interesting."

Palpatine, watching from the adjacent command station, raised an eyebrow.

"Another emperor?"

"Apparently."

"How charming."

Palpus did not answer immediately.

Instead, he ordered the reconnaissance ships to gather additional information.

The results were astonishing.

The galaxy was not merely inhabited.

It was consumed by war.

Thousands of military engagements occurred across its vast territories. Entire planetary populations were mobilized for warfare. Fleets numbering in the thousands moved between star systems, while immense armies fought over worlds whose names changed repeatedly as borders shifted.

The political structure was equally extraordinary.

A human empire ruled a vast portion of the galaxy, claiming millions of worlds and maintaining an enormous military establishment.

Its technology varied wildly.

Some systems possessed advanced starships and powerful energy weapons. Others relied on crude machinery, ancient industrial infrastructure, or technology they no longer fully understood.

Yet the empire endured.

Its armies were immense.

Its bureaucracy was staggering.

Its enemies were numerous.

And its citizens lived beneath a system of religious devotion, military obligation, and absolute obedience.

Palpus slowly leaned back in his chair.

"This is not an ordinary civilization."

"No," Palpatine agreed. "It appears to be a human-dominated empire."

"An empire at war with almost everything around it."

The Emperor's eyes narrowed.

"Then perhaps we have found a suitable destination."

Palpus looked toward the star map.

He had expected an interesting universe.

He had not expected one quite so familiar in its ambitions.

But the details were stranger than anything he had encountered before.

The intercepted communications repeatedly referenced something called the Warp.

Ships travelled through it.

Psychic powers operated through it.

Demons emerged from it.

And the entire civilization appeared to depend upon a dangerous method of interstellar travel involving this mysterious dimension.

Palpus ordered the reconnaissance vessels to avoid all unexplained energy phenomena until further investigation.

He had no intention of exposing his fleet to an unknown threat merely to satisfy curiosity.

Then a new report arrived.

One that changed everything.

A scouting vessel had detected an immense concentration of military installations in a nearby system.

The structures were ancient.

The energy signatures were unusual.

And something about them suggested that the civilization had once possessed technology far beyond what its current inhabitants understood.

Palpus smiled faintly.

"Now that is worth investigating."

Far away, upon Holy Terra, the Imperium of Man continued its endless struggle for survival.

The Imperial Palace stretched across an immense portion of the planet's surface, surrounded by fortifications, defensive batteries, and countless administrative complexes.

Within its deepest sanctums, the Emperor of Mankind sat upon the Golden Throne.

He had ruled humanity for ten thousand years.

Or, more accurately, he had endured for ten thousand years while his empire fought to preserve the remnants of his dream.

The Imperium had become something monstrous.

Its bureaucracy consumed entire planets.

Its religious institutions worshipped the very ruler who had once opposed religious superstition.

Its armies fought endless wars against aliens, heretics, mutants, and daemonic forces.

Humanity survived.

But survival came at a terrible cost.

And now, deep within the Imperial Palace, something stirred.

The Emperor's consciousness shifted.

A disturbance had appeared beyond the boundaries of his known reality.

It was faint.

Distant.

Yet unmistakably artificial.

Something had crossed a boundary that should not have been crossed.

The Emperor reached outward through the Warp.

For a moment, he sensed an unfamiliar presence.

Not a daemon.

Not a human psyker.

Not one of the countless alien minds that populated the galaxy.

Something else.

Something powerful.

Something disciplined.

Then the presence vanished beneath layers of shielding and dimensional interference.

The Emperor's psychic attention sharpened.

For ten thousand years, he had watched humanity struggle against forces that threatened to destroy it.

Now something new had entered the equation.

He did not know whether it represented salvation or catastrophe.

But he knew one thing.

It could not be ignored.

Aboard the Dementor, Palpus received the latest reconnaissance reports.

The destination was confirmed.

The Milky Way Galaxy.

The forty-first millennium.

The Imperium of Man.

He studied the information in silence.

The Emperor of Mankind.

The Adeptus Astartes.

The Imperial Guard.

The Inquisition.

The Mechanicum.

The Chaos Gods.

The Necrons.

The Aeldari.

The Orks.

The Tyranids.

The galaxy was filled with civilizations and entities capable of threatening entire sectors.

Some possessed technology that rivalled the Empire's greatest achievements.

Others wielded powers that operated according to rules his scientists had not yet understood.

Palpus smiled.

For the first time in many years, he felt genuine anticipation.

"Father."

Palpatine turned toward him.

"This universe will require a different approach."

"Because of its enemies?"

"Because of its scale, its history, and the nature of its threats. We must understand the Warp before committing our primary fleets. We must learn how this civilization operates, how its enemies fight, and what resources can be acquired without exposing our capabilities prematurely."

Palpatine considered the proposal.

"And Terra?"

"We observe first."

The Emperor nodded.

"Very well."

Palpus returned his attention to the star map.

"Dispatch additional reconnaissance vessels. Identify the major factions, locate their shipyards, and determine the capabilities of their fleets. I want information on their weapons, their power sources, their military doctrine, and their methods of interstellar travel."

The orders were transmitted immediately.

Across the newly discovered galaxy, Imperial exploration ships began moving into uncharted systems.

Their sensors swept across ancient battlefields.

They observed enormous manufactoria.

They detected vast military fleets.

They recorded strange energy signatures that seemed to originate beyond ordinary space.

And somewhere within the darkness, something noticed their presence.

The Imperium of Man had survived ten thousand years of war.

It had fought gods.

It had endured the rise and fall of civilizations.

It had watched entire sectors disappear beneath the hunger of alien empires.

Now a new power had arrived.

A power from beyond its own reality.

And its rulers had come not to worship the Emperor of Mankind, nor to submit to his Imperium.

They had come to explore.

To understand.

And eventually, perhaps, to conquer.

For Darth Palpus, the forty-first millennium represented the beginning of an entirely new campaign.

He intended to make certain that the Empire would be ready for whatever awaited it.
