Chapter 44 - The Night I Chose to Run

My fingers trembled so badly I lost strength in my knees. I fell on the cold floor, my palms hitting the ground as my body collapsed under the weight of what I was seeing.

"No… no…" I whispered as tears spilled endlessly.

Everything inside me shattered—not slowly, but all at once, like a glass thrown from a tower.

Darius stopped walking. He looked at me with a bored expression, not even shocked to see me crying.

"Oh… you're awake?" he said carelessly, as if I was a stranger he accidentally bumped into.

I shook my head, sobbing. "Why… why did you not come to me?"

He stared at me blankly for a second. Then he sighed.

"Don't start crying, Aria. It's annoying."

Annoying.

My tears… my pain… my shattered heart… was annoying to him.

"I waited the whole night…" my voice cracked. "I waited for you… why didn't you come?"

"I was tired," he said casually. "And occupied."

Occupied.

With Belleah.
