Without saying another word, she moved to where he sat and simply let herself sink down beside his chair.
The cool tiles of the balcony floor felt good against her legs as she settled herself, grateful to finally be off her feet.
Then she carefully lowered her head to rest on his lap.
The fabric of his jeans was warm and familiar against her cheek, and the simple contact made some of the tension begin to leave her body.
Eric's hand immediately found her hair, his fingers threading through the dark strands with gentle care.
The motion was soothing, almost like a lullaby, and Hailey felt herself beginning to relax for the first time all day.
"This is exactly what I needed," she murmured against his leg, her voice barely audible.
"You look exhausted," Eric observed quietly.
"I am exhausted," Hailey confirmed.
"Should I make you some tea?" Eric offered.
"No, just keep doing this," Hailey said, referring to his fingers in her hair.
