Nick Fury set down the White House authorization document, jaw tight with frustration. Political maneuvering had boxed him in—he couldn't shut down Red Ribbon Corporation without directly contradicting the President and Pentagon.
But that didn't mean S.H.I.E.L.D. had to stay completely sidelined.
"We can't ban the organization outright," Fury said, thinking aloud. "Coulson, how many superheroes are they recruiting through public auditions?"
Coulson pulled up additional files on the conference room screen. "Three external positions. They've already confirmed four internal members from the Fraternity." He handed over printed dossiers. "Here's what we have on them."
Fury opened the first folder.
SELENE
Nationality: British
Affiliation: Vampire Elder, second supernatural faction to join Fraternity
Abilities: Enhanced speed (near-teleportation), superhuman strength, centuries of combat experience
Notable: Vampires under her leadership no longer vulnerable to sunlight (method unknown)
Threat Assessment: High
Fury's frown deepened as he read. S.H.I.E.L.D. had tracked two major supernatural recruitment waves into the Fraternity—first werewolves, then vampires. Their undercover assets within the organization had confirmed both groups' integration.
The vampire situation particularly concerned him. British S.H.I.E.L.D. had maintained a working relationship with vampire covens for decades—artificial blood plasma in exchange for peaceful coexistence, no human predation. That arrangement had kept things stable.
But these vampires served Smith Doyle now. And somehow, they'd overcome their primary weakness. Vampires who could operate in daylight were exponentially more dangerous.
He moved to the second file.
MICHAEL CORVIN
Nationality: American
Former Occupation: Medical doctor, London
Current Status: Hybrid (vampire-werewolf), Werewolf Clan Leader
Abilities: Superhuman strength, speed, regeneration, transformation
Affiliation: Led werewolf integration into Fraternity
Threat Assessment: High
The transformation from ordinary doctor to hybrid alpha was unusual but not unprecedented in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s experience. Enhanced individuals often came from unexpected backgrounds. What mattered was capability and loyalty—Michael clearly possessed both.
Third file.
ALEXEI SHOSTAKOV
Codename: Red Guardian
Nationality: Former Soviet, current American resident
Background: Soviet super-soldier program (Cold War era)
Status: Missing since USSR collapse, recently resurfaced
Abilities: Enhanced strength, durability, decades of combat training
Affiliation: Red Ribbon Corporation / Fraternity
Threat Assessment: Moderate-High
Fury's headache intensified. He'd lived through the Cold War, fought in its shadows. The Red Guardian had been the Soviet Union's answer to Captain America—their symbol of communist strength and ideological superiority.
Finding Steve Rogers frozen in ice was miraculous. Having the Red Guardian resurface simultaneously felt like the universe's idea of a joke.
At least Alexei hadn't rejoined Russian intelligence. He'd thrown in with Smith Doyle instead, which was... well, not better from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s perspective, but at least predictable. The Fraternity collected powerful individuals the way some people collected stamps.
Final file.
WESLEY
Real Name: Wesley Gibson
Nationality: American
Background: Son of Cross (Fraternity elder), childhood friend of Smith Doyle
Abilities: Master assassin, gun-fu combat specialist, symbiote enhancement (Severance)
Affiliation: Fraternity senior leadership
Threat Assessment: Moderate-High
Fury closed the dossiers and looked at Coulson. "They've assembled a formidable core team. Vampire elder, hybrid alpha, Soviet super-soldier, enhanced assassin. The three public recruitment slots are almost irrelevant—these four could handle most threats independently."
"Which raises the question," Coulson said carefully, "of what they're really building. If it were purely about heroism, four would suffice."
"It's about optics," Fury replied. "Public engagement. Making people feel involved in the process. Smart politics wrapped in superhero packaging." He drummed fingers on the table. "Do we have any chance of infiltrating the recruitment process?"
Coulson nodded. "Their selection methodology is identical to reality television talent shows. Public submissions, viewer voting, personality assessments. It creates openings for our people."
"What kind of openings?"
"We'd need enhanced individuals—actual superhumans with legitimate abilities. Anything less gets screened out immediately. But if we can provide candidates who genuinely qualify and pass their vetting..." Coulson pulled up two new files. "I have recommendations."
The first profile appeared on screen.
CHEN HAORAN
Age: 26
Origin: Hong Kong
Ability: Pyrokinesis (fire generation and manipulation)
Status: Active
Coulson provided context: "Chen was recruited through our Hong Kong liaison network. Natural pyrokinetic ability emerged during adolescence—he could generate small flames, nothing combat-effective."
"We brought him to the Academy and administered the enhanced serum—a modified version of Erskine's original formula combined with modern biomolecular research. The enhancement amplified his pyrokinesis dramatically. He can now project streams of flame hot enough to melt steel, maintain sustained combustion, and control fire within a twenty-meter radius."
Fury studied the combat footage showing Chen incinerating target dummies with concentrated flame bursts. "Impressive. What's his psychological profile?"
"Stable. Loyal. Motivated by genuine desire to help people—his family's restaurant in Hong Kong was destroyed by Triad arson when he was twelve. He views his abilities as a chance to prevent others suffering similar losses."
"Perfect hero motivation," Fury observed. "Public would eat that story up. Who's the second candidate?"
The screen changed.
DONNIE GILL
Age: 19
Origin: American (Boston)
Ability: Cryokinesis (ice generation and manipulation)
"Donnie's a prodigy," Coulson explained. "Enrolled at S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy age sixteen on academic scholarship—his thesis on atmospheric supercooling caught our attention. During a weather manipulation experiment, lightning struck his equipment and triggered latent genetic expression. He developed cryokinetic abilities."
Footage showed Donnie touching surfaces and watching ice spread from contact points, freezing entire walls in seconds.
"Currently he can freeze anything he touches. Larger areas require longer contact time, but his range and speed improve monthly through natural development. He's shown 30% power increase in the last six months alone."
Coulson's expression grew more serious. "Donnie's also one of our brightest scientific minds. His research into thermodynamic manipulation could revolutionize cooling technology. Some analysts believe he should stay in research rather than field operations."
Fury considered that. Donnie Gill represented significant scientific investment—years of training, considerable talent, high potential value. Using him as an undercover asset was expensive.
But intel on Smith Doyle's private superhero team was worth the cost.
"Fire and ice," Fury mused. "Visually distinctive, thematically opposed, both useful in combat. They'd be attractive candidates for Red Ribbon's diversity requirements."
He made his decision. "Coulson, assign both Chen Haoran and Donnie Gill to the infiltration operation. Create false backgrounds that distance them from S.H.I.E.L.D.—we need legends that'll hold up under Fraternity vetting."
"Understood." Coulson made notes. "What's the success threshold? Both candidates placed, or—"
"Best case: both get selected. Realistic expectation: one makes the team." Fury's voice hardened. "I need eyes inside that operation. I need to know what Smith Doyle is really building, what The Paragons' actual mission parameters are, whether they pose threats beyond their stated heroism purpose."
He stood, pacing to the window. "And Coulson? The talent show itself is an intelligence goldmine. Every enhanced individual who applies gets documented—abilities, backgrounds, psychological profiles. Most won't make the team."
"You want us to recruit the rejects," Coulson said, understanding immediately.
"Exactly. Eddie Brock's doing our job for us—identifying and assessing superhumans across America. When candidates fail Red Ribbon's selection, S.H.I.E.L.D. swoops in with offers. Training, support, purpose. We build our own enhanced roster using their screening process."
It was elegant. Let Red Ribbon Corporation spend resources finding and evaluating candidates. S.H.I.E.L.D. cherry-picked the ones who didn't make the final cut but showed promise.
