Chapter 13 - chapter 13 – Whispers of the Forbidden

The sun had barely risen over the jagged peaks surrounding the Iron Mountain Sect when Ethan Sixx set out toward the eastern cliffs. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of frost and pine. The crystal fragment in his pocket pulsed faintly, an almost imperceptible warmth reminding him that the plateau held secrets, unseen yet patient.

Kael Veylan followed reluctantly, muttering about unnecessary morning drills and Ethan's obsession with the cliffs. "One day, that curiosity of yours will land us in serious trouble," he complained.

Ethan allowed a faint smile. "Perhaps. But understanding the world requires patience, observation, and a willingness to tread paths few dare to follow."

Kael groaned. "You make it sound poetic. It's dangerous."

As they neared the training grounds, Beatrice Tracy appeared, her azure robes catching the morning light. Her steps were quiet, precise, and measured, yet there was an unmistakable energy about her, subtle yet alive.

"You're early," Ethan remarked, his tone calm, eyes meeting hers.

Beatrice's lips curved faintly. "Some challenges do not wait for the schedules of sects," she said softly. "And I think today may present one."

Kael muttered under his breath, clearly unconvinced. "Here we go again. Prophecies and challenges…"

Ethan ignored him. Something in Beatrice's expression, a glimmer in her eyes, hinted at awareness beyond ordinary perception.

An instructor emerged from the shadows, announcing a special paired exercise—a test of coordination, strategy, and observation. But this time, there was a twist: a section of the eastern cliffs had been cordoned off, marked as an unstable zone.

"Approach with caution," the instructor warned. "The cliffs shift unpredictably, and subtle fissures may appear at any moment."

Ethan and Beatrice were paired immediately. Their eyes met—a silent acknowledgment of trust, understanding, and mutual anticipation.

The cliffs were treacherous, jagged stone jutting sharply in every direction. Mist swirled around them, thick enough to obscure the edges of ledges and deepen the sense of danger. The faint red shimmer of a hidden fissure pulsed subtly in the corner of Ethan's awareness, and the crystal fragment responded in kind.

Beatrice moved beside him, adapting effortlessly to the precarious footing. "Careful here," she said softly, her voice barely audible over the wind. "The stone beneath us is unstable."

Ethan nodded, letting instinct guide him. Together, they moved as one, subtle shifts of balance and timing ensuring they navigated the dangerous ledges without misstep.

Kael trailed behind, muttering curses under his breath as he struggled to keep pace.

A sudden fissure opened beneath a ledge ahead, glowing faintly with scarlet light. The crystal fragment pulsed, warm against Ethan's chest. Beatrice noticed it as well.

"Do you feel that?" she whispered.

Ethan inclined his head. "Yes. Something watches, quietly… testing us."

Without hesitation, they adjusted their movements, subtle, synchronized, responding to the imperceptible rhythms in the cliffside. Stones shifted, winds rose and fell, yet together they navigated the fissure without incident.

Kael gawked. "How… how do you do that?"

Ethan smiled faintly. "Observation, patience… awareness of what is not immediately visible."

By evening, they returned to the sect grounds, the cliffs behind them bathed in the fading glow of the sun. Beatrice and Ethan walked side by side, neither speaking much, yet both aware of the silent thread that had begun to form between them.

"You are… unlike anyone I've trained with," Beatrice said softly, breaking the silence.

Ethan's gaze met hers, calm and measured. "And you adapt in ways that few can anticipate. It is… rare to encounter someone whose movements complement one's own."

Kael muttered, "Seriously? Now it's poetic compliments too?"

Ethan ignored him, focusing instead on the subtle resonance of the crystal fragment. Its warmth pulsed gently, echoing the faint scarlet shimmer that had guided them today. Somewhere beyond the cliffs, unseen forces stirred quietly, patient and silent.

Ethan realized that this was only the beginning—not just of challenges, but of a bond forming, a connection between two paths that would grow stronger as the trials ahead intensified.

And somewhere, in the quiet pulse of scarlet light and unseen fissures, the Forbidden Zones whispered—a promise of danger, growth, and mysteries waiting to be uncovered.
