Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22 - Shadows Of The Past

The Punisher: The Devil's Choice

Chapter 22 — Shadows of the Past

The night city never truly slept.

Neon lights flickered across rain-soaked streets while distant sirens echoed between tall buildings. Crime had become the heartbeat of the city, pulsing through alleyways and underground clubs like poison through veins.

But tonight, something else moved through the darkness.

Something far more terrifying.

High above the street, standing on the edge of a crumbling rooftop, Kael Riven stared down at the city.

His eyes glowed faintly red.

Above the heads of people walking below, crosses appeared.

White.

Red.

Orange.

Each cross told him the truth of their souls.

White meant innocence.

Red meant corruption.

Orange meant evil waiting to happen.

Tonight, far too many red crosses burned across the streets.

Kael clenched his fists.

Flames flickered briefly around his hands.

The devil's mark on his chest pulsed.

A whisper crawled through his mind.

Punish them…

Kael shut his eyes tightly.

"Not tonight," he whispered.

For once, he wanted silence.

For once, he wanted to feel human again.

And there was only one place left that reminded him of that life.

---

The Old Café

Across the city, a small café glowed warmly in the night.

It was one of the few peaceful places left.

Inside, soft music played quietly while only a few customers sat scattered around tables.

Behind the counter stood a girl with long dark hair tied in a loose ponytail.

Lena Arashi.

She wiped a glass cup slowly, staring absent-mindedly out the window.

Her coworker nudged her shoulder.

"You're doing it again," the girl teased.

Lena blinked.

"Doing what?"

"Looking outside like you're waiting for someone."

Lena looked away quickly.

"I'm not waiting for anyone."

But deep down, she knew she was lying.

She had been waiting for Kael Riven.

Ever since high school, Kael had always been quiet, shy, and distant. Most students bullied him or ignored him.

But Lena had always seen something different.

A kindness.

A sadness.

And ever since Kael disappeared months ago, she couldn't stop thinking about him.

The bell above the café door suddenly rang.

Lena looked up.

A tall boy stepped inside, shaking rain from his jacket.

"Yo Lena," he said casually.

She smiled instantly.

"Taro!"

---

The Loyal Friend

Taro Kiyoshi dropped into a chair at the counter with a tired sigh.

His messy black hair and relaxed attitude made him look like someone who didn't care about anything.

But Lena knew better.

Taro had always been fiercely loyal.

Especially to Kael.

"You look exhausted," Lena said.

"Long day," Taro replied.

"Work?"

"More like chasing idiots around the city."

Taro worked part-time helping a local mechanic shop, but he also had a strange hobby.

He liked investigating crime rumors.

Not because he wanted trouble.

But because he wanted answers.

Especially about the mysterious figure the city had started whispering about.

The Punisher.

Lena poured him a cup of coffee.

"You're thinking about him again, aren't you?" she asked quietly.

Taro raised an eyebrow.

"Who?"

"The Punisher."

Taro leaned back in his chair.

The rumors had spread quickly.

Criminals disappearing.

Gang hideouts burned to ash.

Bodies found with strange burn marks.

Some people called the Punisher a hero.

Others called him a monster.

Taro rubbed his chin.

"I don't know what he is," he admitted.

"But I know one thing."

"What?"

"He hates criminals more than anyone I've ever seen."

Lena stared into her coffee cup.

For some reason, her chest tightened.

"Taro… do you ever wonder what happened to Kael?"

Taro's expression softened.

"Yeah."

"He just vanished."

"Like he was swallowed by the city."

Lena's voice dropped to a whisper.

"I miss him."

Taro sighed.

"You always liked him."

Lena's cheeks flushed slightly.

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't have to."

Taro chuckled.

"But if Kael were here right now, I'd probably punch him."

Lena blinked.

"Why?"

"For disappearing without telling us."

But deep down, Taro felt something strange.

A feeling he couldn't explain.

A suspicion.

Something about the Punisher reminded him of someone.

Someone quiet.

Someone angry.

Someone who had suffered too much.

Kael.

---

Watching From the Shadows

Across the street, hidden on a rooftop, Kael watched the café window.

He saw them.

Lena.

Taro.

Talking.

Laughing.

Living normal lives.

For a moment, Kael's chest tightened painfully.

Memories rushed back.

School hallways.

Bullies pushing him.

Taro stepping in to defend him.

Lena quietly sitting beside him during lunch.

Those days felt like another lifetime.

The devil's voice whispered again.

You are not one of them anymore.

Kael's red wings flickered faintly behind him before fading again.

He clenched his jaw.

"I know."

Below him, a group of criminals suddenly stepped into the street.

Kael's vision shifted.

Red crosses burned above their heads.

One of them grabbed a woman's purse and shoved her to the ground.

Kael's eyes turned cold.

The Punisher returned.

"Sorry," he whispered to the night.

Flames exploded around him.

And he vanished.

---

Minutes Later

The alley behind the café echoed with screams.

Fire lit the darkness.

Criminals ran desperately, but there was nowhere to go.

A figure with burning red wings descended like a demon of judgment.

The Punisher had arrived.

"Please!" one man begged.

Kael's eyes glowed brighter.

Above the man's head burned a dark red cross.

Murderer.

"Justice," Kael said coldly.

Fire consumed the alley.

Seconds later, silence returned.

---

Back at the Café

Lena suddenly shivered.

"Taro… did you feel that?"

"Feel what?"

"I don't know… something strange."

Outside, the rain grew heavier.

Far away, a flash of red light illuminated the sky for a split second.

Taro looked toward it slowly.

"That's… the third time this week."

Lena frowned.

"What is?"

Taro stood up.

"The Punisher."

He walked toward the door.

Lena grabbed his arm.

"You're not going after him, are you?"

Taro smiled slightly.

"Someone has to figure out the truth."

Lena looked worried.

But neither of them realized something important.

Across the city.

Standing silently in the rain.

Kael Riven was watching them.

And for the first time since becoming the Punisher…

His heart felt something again.
