Part 13: Unspoken Answers
The heavy thud of Kaito's body hitting the polished floorboards shattered the stillness of the genkan.
"Kaito!"
Akari dropped to her knees beside him instantly, her hands hovering over his back before gently rolling him onto his side. Renjiro was right beside her, his large hands supporting Kaito's shoulders as they checked his breathing. His pulse was ragged and thready, but steady—he was completely out, overcome by absolute physical exhaustion.
As Renjiro carefully lifted the boy into his arms, Akari's gaze locked onto Kaito's right hand. Wrapped snugly around his forearm was a fresh, pristine white medical bandage, pinned tightly at the wrist.
"Where did he get this?" Akari whispered, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Where could he have even gone to get bandaged like this?"
Renjiro adjusted his grip on Kaito, his expression darkening with quiet worry. "We don't know what state his body is in right now. We need to get him back to the medical facility immediately."
The night air was cold as they hurried through the quiet village streets, carrying Kaito back toward the hospital ward.
Just as they reached the lit entrance of the main building, the sliding glass doors pulled open. Shizue stepped out into the night, clutching a small, non-descript paper bag in her right hand. She seemed focused on her path, her head lowered slightly.
"Hey, Shizue!" Akari called out, pausing mid-stride as they approached the steps.
Shizue turned around, her eyes widening slightly in surprise. She glanced down at Kaito lying unconscious in Renjiro's arms, then met Akari's eyes with a brief, apologetic expression.
"Sorry, I'm in a hurry," Shizue said, her voice quiet and even. "We'll talk later."
Without waiting for a response or offering any explanation, she adjusted the bag under her arm, stepped around them, and quickly disappeared into the shadows down the street.
Akari stared after her for a brief second, her mind racing, but she didn't have time to question it. Kaito moved weakly in Renjiro's arms with a quiet groan, forcing her focus straight back to the urgent task at hand.
Inside the examination room, Dr. Ken acted quickly. Renjiro laid Kaito onto the crisp white bed while Dr. Ken unwrapped his stethoscope and checked the boy's vital signs, shining a small light into his unresponding eyes.
"He's severely exhausted," Dr. Ken reported after a long, thorough examination. "His core energy is thoroughly drained, and his muscle tissue is running on empty. But physically... he is stable. He simply needs rest and close monitoring."
"Dr. Ken," Akari spoke up, stepping closer to the bed and pointing toward Kaito's right arm. "What about this? He came back home wearing a fresh bandage. Did he come here earlier?"
Dr. Ken looked down at the neatly wrapped cloth around Kaito's forearm. His expression remained completely unreadable, his eyes lingering on the sterile gauze for a long moment before he softly pulled Kaito's sleeve down over it.
"He needs sleep, Akari," Dr. Ken said simply, avoiding the direct question as he adjusted the bed covers. "Leave him to rest for tonight."
Down the hall, the hospital had settled into a deep, silent quiet.
The fifteen academy students, Daigo-sensei, Mikasa, and little Mimi were all long gone. The bedside table beside Haruto remained crowded with the small vase of wildflowers, the folded notes, and the large class card resting quietly against the lamp.
Dr. Ken stepped into Haruto's room, pulling out his clipboard to record the late-night vitals. He checked the fluid lines, adjusted the monitor settings, and carefully reviewed the digital readout showing Haruto's internal levels.
As his eyes swept across the updated charts, Dr. Ken paused.
Haruto's rapid downward spiral had halted. The severe internal strain was receding, his color was slowly returning, and his dangerously low levels had officially stabilized. The urgent medical crisis had passed; the emergency treatment had taken hold.
Dr. Ken placed a quiet hand on the edge of Haruto's bed, looking down at the sleeping boy with a slow, silent nod, keeping the charts tucked firmly against his side.
In the adjacent recovery room, the dim moonlight filtered through the window panels, casting long shadows across the floorboards.
Kaito lay motionless on the bed, his face pale and peaceful in unconscious sleep, his wrapped right hand resting quietly over the white blanket. Beside his bed, Akari sat in a low chair, leaning forward with her chin resting on her folded hands.
Her eyes shifted back and forth between Kaito's quiet face and the stark white medical bandage around his wrist.
Where did he go?
Why does he have that bandage?
What did he do?
Across the corridor, in a room just like his, Haruto lay fast asleep under the pale blue glow of the steady heart monitor. Two brothers, separate and silent, resting beneath the very same roof.
Beep.
...
Beep.
The monitor ticked steadily into the night, keeping its quiet secret in the dark.
