PART 5 — "Night Unease Begins"
Haruto didn't respond.
Kaito stayed quiet.
The room settled again—
but not like before.
The calm was gone.
Replaced by something else.
Uncertainty.
And a quiet tension none of them could ignore now.
After a while—
the silence didn't hold.
Haruto's eyes stayed open, fixed on the ceiling.
"…If it's real…"
He spoke quietly.
"…then it won't stay small."
Kaito frowned slightly.
"…You're already assuming it's war."
Haruto didn't look at him.
"…That's how it starts."
A pause.
"…Small talks… quiet movements… then suddenly it's everywhere."
Ayame turned her head slightly toward him.
"…Haruto."
But he continued.
"…Last time too."
The words came slower now.
Heavier.
"…No one thought it would reach them."
Kaito's expression tightened.
He knew what he meant.
Haruto's voice dropped further.
"…Until it did."
A brief silence.
"…Third Great Shinobi War…"
The room felt colder.
"…They said it was far from home."
His fingers tightened slightly over the blanket.
"…Then one day… it wasn't."
Ayame's eyes sharpened.
"…Haruto."
Still—
he didn't stop.
"…And by the time people realized…"
A pause.
"…it was already too late."
The weight of those words settled deep.
Kaito sat still.
Watching him.
Something about the way Haruto was speaking—
wasn't normal.
Not just thinking.
He was going too far.
Too deep.
"…We don't even know if it's real," Kaito said, trying to keep it steady.
Haruto's gaze didn't shift.
"…That's the worst part."
A quiet breath.
"…You never know when it becomes real."
Silence.
Ayame pushed herself up slightly.
"…Haruto."
This time—
firm.
That broke it.
His eyes blinked once.
Focus returning.
The tension in his hand loosened slowly.
A few seconds passed.
Then he exhaled.
"…I'm overthinking."
Ayame watched him for a moment longer.
Then nodded faintly.
"…Yeah."
Kaito didn't say anything immediately.
But inside—
there was a brief flicker.
Not fear—
but something close.
He hadn't seen Haruto like that before.
That serious.
That distant.
But he didn't show it.
Instead—
he leaned back again, forcing a lighter tone.
"…Relax."
A small pause.
"…We've got Brother Renjiro… and Aka."
He glanced between them.
"…Nothing's happening to us."
Ayame lay back down slowly.
"…Yeah."
Haruto closed his eyes again.
"…Yeah."
But this time—
the room didn't fully settle.
Because even if they tried to move past it—
something had already shifted.
And none of them could ignore that completely.
Ayame watched them both for a moment.
The tension in the room hadn't fully gone away.
Haruto had gone quiet again.
Kaito was pretending everything was normal.
But she could feel it—
neither of them would sleep like this.
She exhaled softly.
Then shifted slightly on her futon.
"…Enough."
Her voice wasn't loud.
But it was firm.
Both of them glanced at her.
"…You're both overthinking now."
Kaito opened his mouth—
"…I'm not—"
"Sleep."
She cut him off calmly.
No argument.
Just a simple order.
Kaito paused.
Then frowned slightly.
"…You're acting like Aka now."
Ayame didn't react.
"…Good."
A small silence.
Haruto let out a quiet breath.
"…You too," she added, her gaze shifting to him.
He didn't respond at first.
Then—
"…Yeah."
Ayame lay back down properly this time, pulling the blanket over herself.
"…Nothing's happening tonight."
A pause.
"…So sleep."
Kaito clicked his tongue lightly but turned to his side.
"…Fine."
Haruto adjusted slightly, closing his eyes again.
"…Fine."
The room slowly quieted.
Their breathing began to settle.
Ayame kept her eyes open for a few seconds longer.
Listening.
Making sure.
Kaito's breathing evened out first.
Then Haruto's.
Only after that—
did she finally close her eyes.
"…Good."
She whispered softly.
And for now—
the room returned to silence.
Not perfect.
Not completely peaceful.
But enough.
Enough for them to rest.
And slowly—
Ayame herself drifted into sleep.
