Chapter 145 - Chapter 25 – Undisputed Before the Shift, Part5

Part 5: The Ones Who Notice

The applause faded slowly, dissolving into a low murmur as people began to stand and move. Conversations sparked across the arena, voices overlapping, reactions spilling out now that the tension had finally broken.

Some students looked inspired.

Some looked shaken.

Some… looked straight at the stage, unable to accept what they had just seen.

On the stage, the four of them stepped back as instructors guided them off. The lights no longer focused on them, but the attention still lingered.

Haruto walked in silence.

Ayame beside him.

Arashi slightly ahead.

Amaya just behind.

For a moment, none of them spoke.

Then—

"…You held back at the start."

Arashi's voice broke the quiet.

He didn't look at Haruto when he said it.

Haruto's steps didn't change.

"…Yeah."

A short answer.

Nothing more.

Arashi's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Don't do that next time."

This time, Haruto glanced at him.

"…Next time?"

A faint pause.

Arashi stopped walking.

"…There will be one."

No arrogance.

No anger.

Just certainty.

Haruto looked at him for a second—

then looked away.

"…Then don't lose before that."

A small silence followed.

Then—

a faint scoff.

Not from Arashi.

From Amaya.

"…You two really don't stop, do you?"

She stepped forward slightly, coming between them.

"…At least wait until we're not standing in front of half the academy."

Kaito suddenly appeared from the side, sliding in with his usual energy.

"Oi! You guys started without me?"

He looked between them, then grinned.

"…Talking about rematches already? Good. I'm in too."

Arashi glanced at him briefly.

"…You already lost."

Kaito froze.

"…Wow."

A beat.

"…That's how we're starting?"

Ayame let out a small breath—almost a laugh.

"…You walked into that one."

Kaito turned to her immediately.

"Hey, you're supposed to be on my side."

"…I am," she said calmly.

"…Just not when you say things like that."

Amaya shook her head slightly, a faint smile on her face.

"…This is why no one takes you seriously."

Kaito pointed at her.

"Excuse me, I am very serious."

No one responded.

"…Okay, sometimes."

That got a small reaction.

Even Haruto's expression shifted slightly.

For a moment—

it felt normal.

Light.

Like nothing had changed.

But—

from the side of the corridor, a group of instructors stood watching.

One of them crossed his arms.

"…Those four."

Another nodded.

"…They're already ahead."

A third spoke quietly.

"…And they don't even realize it yet."

Behind them—

Dr. Ken stood in silence.

His eyes weren't on all four.

They were on one.

And that wasn't Haruto.

"…No," he muttered under his breath.

"…One of them does."

He turned and walked away without another word.

Back in the corridor, the group began to split.

Arashi stopped first.

"…I'm heading back."

Amaya nodded.

"…Same."

She glanced once at Haruto and Ayame—

then turned.

"…See you."

They left without anything more.

Simple.

Direct.

Leaving the triplets and Kaito behind.

Kaito stretched his arms slightly.

"…Man… that was something."

He looked at Haruto.

"…Rank 2, huh."

Haruto didn't react.

"…You sound disappointed," Kaito added.

"…I'm not," Haruto replied calmly.

Ayame looked between them.

"…He is."

Kaito blinked.

"…Wait—what?"

Haruto didn't deny it.

"…I could've done better."

Kaito stared at him.

"…You're actually insane."

Ayame watched him quietly.

Not judging.

Not surprised.

Just… observing.

"…Then do better next time," she said softly.

Haruto looked at her.

For a moment—

something in his expression shifted.

Then—

"…Yeah."

Simple.

But real.

Kaito exhaled and shook his head.

"…Both of you are ridiculous."

He turned and started walking.

"Come on, I'm starving."

Ayame followed.

Haruto walked last.

The corridor lights stretched ahead of them, long and quiet.

Their footsteps echoed softly.

Behind them—

the noise of the arena faded.

Ahead—

the night waited.

And for now—

it felt peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Because somewhere, far from their sight—

something had already begun moving.

And none of them—

knew it yet.
