The shift from the hot chimney to the freezing roof of the Iron Fortress was a total shock. The air was clean and biting – way better than the soot and heat – but there was no cover. They were on a huge, flat black rock, watched over by the fortress walls and surrounded by big, silent cannons. The sea was dark and endless, offering no way out.
The loud alarm bell kept ringing, meaning the Purists were on high alert.
Elara was lying on the cold stone like broken glass, giving off a weak, flickering blue light. The intense energy needed to break out of the chimney had pushed the Anti-Abacus way too far. The Manifest was just lying there.
Garth coughed hard, trying to get air into his smoke-filled lungs. He stumbled to the edge, looking for where they were supposed to meet their ride.
Captain, Garth choked out, pointing to the dark sea before dawn. We're out in the open. The Sea Serpent is still three hours away. They won't risk getting closer with the alarm going off.
Veridian didn't care about the pain, the cold, or being tired. She moved like a predator protecting its kill. She grabbed the Manifest and knelt by Elara, checking her pulse. It was weak and skipping. The Purists hadn't killed her with heat or water, but with weird science.
We have three hours, Veridian said, her voice rough and cold. And every guard in this fortress is coming here. We can't win a fight.
**I. The Iron Wall (About 1,500 words)**
Veridian looked for somewhere to hide, but the roof was just made for defense. The only real cover was the three huge cannons. Each cannon was in a rotating metal frame, protected by thick, low walls.
The cannons, Veridian said, looking at the closest one. They give us cover and a better view. Let's go.
She grabbed Elara, dragging her body toward the nearest cannon, its cold metal making the night even colder. Garth, scared by the threat, helped push Elara behind the thick shields of the cannon frame.
They had just gotten settled when the first wave of guards stormed onto the roof from the main fortress entrance – a thick, dark line of men, led by Commander Silas, who was still wet and totally angry.
Silas pointed his blunt metal club right at them. Don't let the monster reach the sea! Stop the evil!
The guards didn't charge in a rush. They moved with scary discipline, forming a tight line – a human wall.
Veridian knew she couldn't beat them in a fight. She needed some kind of advantage.
She looked at the cannon. It was heavy, normal, and worked well.
Garth, Veridian whispered, pulling his attention to the big, black barrel. This cannon uses gunpowder and gears. Can we control it by hand?
Garth, being an engineer, got it right away. Yeah! But it's locked! They keep it aimed at the sea! We can't aim it at the fortress!
We don't need to aim it at the fortress, Veridian whispered, thinking up a plan. We need to aim it at them.
She pointed to the guards, who were using the open space to form a semicircle. They're predictable. They just move in a straight line. They won't change their formation. We'll use that against them.
Veridian grabbed the big, rusty wheel that controlled the cannon's aim. She struggled, her muscles burning, trying to move the heavy metal thing. It was stuck.
It's stuck, Captain! They grease the gears facing the sea, but lock the ones facing land!
Then we break the lock, Veridian said. Elara has the Manifest. She understands the science. She can't aim the cannon, but she can tell us where to hit it.
Veridian pressed the Manifest against Elara's chest, then put her ear to Elara's lips.
Elara! The cannon! Figure out the thing holding it in place! Find where it's weakest!
**II. The Cold Plan (About 1,700 words)**
Elara's eyes fluttered open, but she was out of it. The Anti-Abacus was getting data and needed to do something.
SCANNING. IT'S A METAL LOCK. NEEDS A HIT IN A CERTAIN PLACE. Elara's voice was thin and robotic.
The pin! Where is it, Elara? Veridian asked.
Elara's fingers pointed to a small metal bolt under the main gear. It was a simple pin to make sure the cannon never hit the fortress.
Veridian looked at Garth. The pin. One hit. We need to break it to free the cannon.
Garth, who had just used a hammer to commit treason, nodded. He looked around like crazy. We don't have the hammer! And the only thing strong enough is... He looked at the Manifest in Veridian's hand.
Veridian knew what he meant. The Manifest was just lying there, but it was super dense and perfect – good for hitting things hard.
Garth. We don't have time to do the right thing. Use the Manifest.
Garth hesitated, but his survival instinct won. He reached out and took the dark thing from Veridian.
The guards were now close, moving slowly and surrounding them.
Guards! Silas yelled. Drop your weapons! Your Captain is working with evil!
Veridian stood, getting Silas's attention. Silas! You're following a lie! The Guild is coming for you, and you're defending something that doesn't matter!
Garth, ignoring the shouts, put the Manifest against the pin. He grabbed the biggest chunk of broken metal he could find and raised it like a weapon.
He hit the Manifest.
WHANG!
The sound was sharp and metallic. The Manifest sent all the force right into the pin, breaking it instantly.
Garth dropped the metal piece and the Manifest. The cannon's wheel spun easily.
It's free, Captain!
Veridian jumped on the wheel, spinning it like crazy. The huge cannon slowly turned away from the sea and toward the guards.
Silas's eyes went wide. He realized their formation had become a target.
SPREAD OUT! Silas screamed.
The guards hesitated because they were trained to keep formation. It gave Veridian the advantage she needed.
Veridian grabbed the cannon's lever and cranked it down, aiming the barrel at the ground in front of the guards.
Garth! Gunpowder! How do we load this thing?
It's loaded! They keep it ready! It's strong gunpowder! But we need something to light it!
It just needed something to hit it.
Veridian grabbed a heavy wrench. She aimed it at the thing that sets it off.
Garth! Duck!
She slammed the wrench into the fuse.
BOOM!
The explosion was super loud. The cannon fired into the ground, right in front of the guards.
The ground was solid rock. The explosion didn't go into the ground – it went sideways, smashing the rock and sending pieces flying.
The line of guards was broken. Men were thrown backward, confused, and buried under rock. Even Silas was hit.
The formation was gone. The way was clear.
**III. The Race Before Dawn (About 1,000 words)**
Let's go! Veridian yelled, her ears ringing.
She grabbed Elara and carried her. Elara's body was just dead weight.
Garth ran ahead, clearing a path. They ran toward the edge of the roof.
Veridian's plan was simple: get to the edge and wait for the Sea Serpent to arrive.
They reached the cliff edge, where the rock dropped straight down to the sea. There was a wall that was high enough for cover.
They hid behind the wall.
Garth looked at the horizon as the dawnstarted to appear. One hour, Captain. Maybe less. The sun is coming up fast.
Then we hold them off, Veridian said.
Silas was gathering the guards. They were coming.
Veridian set Elara down.
DATA...MORE ENERGY...
No, Elara. Just stay quiet, Veridian said.
She looked at Garth. We need to secure this spot. They can't climb down, but they can shoot. We need to make this wall impossible to get to.
Garth started using rock to line the top of the wall.
Veridian watched the sun. The light was growing.
She had done a lot. Now, she just had to survive the silence until the sun came up.
