Chapter 44 - Cracking the Little Broken Watch

Doctor Animo stood at the top of Stark Tower, on the tallest building in New York. He raised his arms high, his white hair whipped by the wind!

He felt like a god!

Everything in the human world seemed so pathetic and ridiculous to him!

"New York is still a bit too urbanized," he sneered, "but soon, it will return to prehistoric times and become a paradise for my beloved mutant creatures!"

Just as he was reveling in his own moment, a light, playful voice sounded from behind him.

"Interesting, I knew there had to be a caretaker for the Dinosaur Babies."

Animo turned his head and saw a red battle armor slowly descending.

"Tony Stark, you want to stop me?"

"Correction, you're putting your junk on my roof." Tony, clearly displeased, raised the battle armor's repulsor ray.

This uninvited guest reminded him of the XLR8 from not too long ago.

"What, didn't bring your little pet today?"

Upon hearing this, Animo let out a cold laugh. "Why don't you look up?"

Tony instinctively looked up and saw a massive shadow circling in the sky. It was a large bird, four to five meters long, with terrifying claws that looked capable of piercing a person alive!

Tony wasn't the only one who noticed this giant raptor; Black Widow, who was currently monitoring Tony from Stark Industries, also saw it.

But as a top agent, Natasha had seen it all.

"I really haven't seen a scene like this?"

The first thought that flashed through Natasha's mind upon seeing the monster bird was "It's too big." Her second thought was to contact Nick Fury and let him deal with it himself!

Nick Fury, who was at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters contemplating how to recruit people for the Avengers, realized something was wrong upon receiving Natasha's call.

"What did you say? Some mad scientist wants to turn New York back into a prehistoric world full of dinosaurs?"

Nick Fury almost thought he had misheard.

"That's right, he's on the roof of Stark Tower now, and he's wearing a special suit developed by Osborn," Natasha said, pressing her earpiece. "It's now confirmed that the person who attacked Osborn Tower earlier was likely him."

"Motherfucker!"

Nick had long harbored the idea of forming a superhero team, but he never expected a crisis to emerge before he had even finalized his team members.

"But this is good too."

He thought that after this incident, the Security Council would no longer have any objections to his Avengers initiative.

Thinking about the Security Council gave him a headache.

As the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Security Council only needed to provide him with funds, but as the director, he had many more things to consider. When to embezzle funds, when to falsify accounts – all these required careful consideration.

"What do we do now?"

Natasha, seeing Fury's long silence, quickly asked.

After all, Animo hadn't just brought a mutated parrot; in reality, along with the mutated parrot, there was also a bullfrog monster as huge as a small mountain!

"Agent Romanoff, you hold them off. Reinforcements are on the way."

"Me?"

"Hold them off?"

Natasha looked down at the palm-sized self-defense pistol in her hand, doubting if Nick Fury had been drinking too much.

What was the difference between this and asking her to fight Sukuna?

Cursing inwardly, she still had to act as an agent.

...

The sewer.

Connors, finally realizing he had been deceived by Animo, looked utterly dejected.

Ben had deactivated his transformation and was now waiting for the Little Broken Watch to cool down.

"Doctor Animo has gone to Stark Tower with the Canary Device. I think we still have some time," Ben said, pushing aside Connors' eyelids and injecting the antidote for the serum into his body.

Earlier, he had almost shattered all of Connors' bones. If he had made him lose his superpowers at that moment, Connors might not have survived.

Now that Connors was out of danger, there was no need to worry.

Without the effect of the serum, Connors felt a wave of weakness wash over him. He hadn't fully transformed back into a human because the mutated genes were still active, but his body had shrunk a bit.

However, he could clearly feel his strength beginning to wane.

Connors felt a sense of emptiness, anxiety, and a touch of melancholy. This was a withdrawal symptom; losing power felt terrible.

But his mind was exceptionally clear.

"What a foolish thing I've done..."

He covered his face, draped in ill-fitting clothes that Ben had given him.

"Now is not the time for self-blame, Doctor Connors," Peter comforted him. "You originally wanted to do good; you were just influenced by the serum."

Connors shook his head.

He knew those were just excuses.

The real reason was his arrogance.

"At least there's still a chance to fix it now." Ben sat on the rudimentary testing platform Connors had built.

There were still plenty of materials here, enough for him to make a new serum.

As for the mutant creatures, they should be reversible through Animo's Variometer.

"Doctor Connors, how much do you know about Animo's Variometer?" Ben asked.

He didn't believe Connors would have let Animo experiment on him without any understanding.

"I don't understand its principles, but I know how to operate it."

"That's enough."

Ben quickly adjusted the antidote for the serum. It wasn't difficult for him, having done it once before.

Before long, the serum was made.

Then, he looked at Peter and Connors—Peter felt unnerved by his gaze and asked, "What's wrong?"

"Animo is a dangerous madman. As a precaution, I think it's best to make some more preparations."

If they were unlucky, they might be facing countless mutant dinosaurs next.

"What do you have in mind?"

Ben raised his left wrist and his watch: "Crack it!"

Ben had always wanted to completely crack the Little Broken Watch, but two difficulties had always troubled him.

One was that his knowledge base wasn't sufficient; forcing a crack could cause problems with the Little Broken Watch. The other was that when he transformed into the smartest hero, Grey Matter, he couldn't see his own back, making it difficult to operate.

But now, he abandoned the idea of using a mechanical arm and decided to have Peter operate it instead.

He opened the camera Connors used to record his experimental data, then looked at Peter.

"When I transform into Grey Matter later, the camera will record the images so I can see them. You'll operate it according to my instructions."

"No problem."

Peter didn't quite understand, but he felt he could manage just by following orders.

Connors watched them from afar, not approaching.

"Then, let's begin!"

Ben pressed the watch core!

Tomorrow is Tuesday, time for the weekly check-in. Little ones, don't forget to read daily tomorrow.

The daily readership has been dropping these past two days, my mental state is about to collapse, sob sob sob.
