Kevin's expression turned serious. "Grandpa always had a soft spot for you. He never bought the story about you pushing Jill down those stairs—he wanted to hear it straight from your mouth. That's why we told him you'd gone overseas.
"But he saw right through us. He was determined to track you down himself, and he took a nasty fall at the front entrance trying to get out.
"After that incident, he wouldn't stop demanding we bring you home. Refused to leave the hospital until you came back. That's why he's been stuck there all this time."
He adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, the metal glinting in the light. "Grandpa wouldn't have fallen if it weren't for you. And he wouldn't still be lying in that hospital bed.
"Sallie, Grandpa's not getting any younger. His body can't handle this stress anymore. It's time you grew up and stopped putting him through hell."
My face drained of color, but I had no comeback.
