Chapter 48 - The Kind of Smile That Gives You Away

By the time lunch rolled around, Amara realized something unsettling.

She was humming again.

Not loudly, God no, she wasn't that unhinged, but enough that the tune leaked out between sips of her drink, soft and unguarded, like she'd forgotten she existed in a place where people noticed things. She only caught herself when Sierra stopped, tray hovering, eyebrows lifting slowly in that very specific way that meant oh, this is interesting.

"Wow," Sierra said, dragging the word out as she slid into the seat across from her. "Who are you and what have you done with Amara?"

Amara blinked. Then she looked down at her food as if it might explain her behavior for her.

"I always sit here," she said weakly.

"That's not what I meant." Sierra leaned forward, chin propped on her hand, eyes sharp and gleaming. "You're glowing. And don't insult me by pretending you don't know it."

Amara snorted despite herself. The sound surprised her, came out too easily. "I'm not glowing."
