Chapter 97 - Volume 2, Chapter 45: The Price of Obsession

Down in the concrete tunnel leading to the primary stage, Bisky stood with her arms crossed over her chest, her sharp eyes scanning Yuzuki from head to toe. The muffled roar of eighty thousand fans vibrated through the reinforced walls, a constant, low-frequency hum that signaled the growing anticipation outside. Yuzuki was casually adjusting the collar of his white training jacket, his posture entirely loose, as if he were preparing for a light morning jog rather than a televised duel against a veteran Floor Master.

"Listen to me, Yuzuki," Bisky said, her voice dropping into a rare, deadly serious register. "Kain Vortex is not like the play-in fodder you watched from the balcony. He is an Emitter who actually understands spatial geometry. His Orbit system creates a perpetual motion barrier that handles both trajectory interception and automated counter-attacks simultaneously. If you try to blitz him without a clear calculation of his rotation speeds, you are going to run straight into a meat grinder."

"I know, I know," Yuzuki replied smoothly, a lazy smile playing on his lips as he stretched his arms over his head. "Rotate, intercept, repeat. It's just basic physics, Bisky. The spheres have a fixed mass and a predictable orbital plane. Once I map the baseline frequency, the math will open up."

"It's not just the physics, you arrogant brat!" Bisky snapped, her twin tails bouncing as she stepped closer to poke a firm finger against his chest. "He has an immense pool of aura, and he doesn't waste a single drop on flashiness. He will try to crowd your operational space and force you to make a sloppy movement. Keep your center of gravity low, don't let him read your initial stride, and for the love of sanity, take your hands out of your pockets when the referee slashes his hand!"

Yuzuki let out a short, dry laugh, tapping the bridge of his nose before turning toward the blinding white light at the end of the corridor. "Yeah, yeah. Got it. No pockets. I'll see you in a few minutes, Bisky."

Out in the grand concourses beneath the stadium seating, the financial frenzy had reached a fever pitch. The digital kiosks were flashing with high-speed updates as the betting metrics for the second match locked in. Because Yuzuki had skipped the play-in rounds entirely due to his seeding, the general public was highly skeptical of his baseline durability.

"The kid is an absolute fraud, I'm telling you!" a wealthy merchant shouted, slamming a leather briefcases onto the counter. "Kain has an eighty-eight percent victory rate against advanced physical archetypes! That white-haired kid is just a media stunt to draw in the younger demographic! Put fifty thousand on Kain by absolute ring-out!"

"I don't know, man," a younger hunter muttered, staring intently at his mobile betting application. "The bookies aren't stupid. His baseline agility metrics from his entrance exams were completely off the charts. If he can bypass the spheres, the payout on Yuzuki is three-to-one. I'm taking the risk."

Up in the presidential pavilion, Isaac Netero was practically vibrating with a childlike excitement. He had abandoned his formal seated posture entirely, crouching down right against the gilded safety railing with his hands tucked into his loose white kimono sleeves. His small eyes were wide and glittering with a deep, predatory curiosity.

"Ho ho ho! Finally, finally!" Netero wheezed happily, his wooden clogs clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. "This is exactly why I took the airship out here, Bean. The little white-haired bird is finally leaving the nest to show us what kind of sky he can construct."

"Chairman, please remain behind the reinforced safety line," Bean pleaded anxiously, his green, rounded face covered in a thick layer of sweat as he checked his logistical clipboard. "The internal data requests from the Hunter Association's research branch regarding Yuzuki's spatial anomalies have doubled since this morning. If he unleashes a localized distortion inside a closed stadium environment—"

"Then it will be a marvelous show, Bean!" Netero interrupted with a booming laugh, his long white beard shaking. "Don't be so rigid! Kain Vortex is a magnificent wall for the boy to test his teeth against. Let us see if the prodigy can break a perfect circle!"

The chief announcer's voice cut through the stadium like a razor blade as both fighters stepped through their respective entry gates.

"Introducing first... standing in the western corner! The absolute master of spatial trajectory... The Orbital King... Kain Vortex! And his opponent... standing in the eastern corner... The enigmatic white-haired prodigy... Yuzuki!"

Kain Vortex walked with a slow, heavy confidence, his black combat uniform absorbing the harsh glare of the halogen lights. His arms were crossed over his chest, his calculating gaze locked onto Yuzuki's face from twenty meters away. A cold, arrogant smirk played on the Emitter's lips as he stopped on his designated marker.

"You should have stayed in the waiting room, kid," Kain spoke up, his voice carrying clearly over the wind. "Your little performance against the lower-tier testers doesn't mean anything here. My Orbit system has no blind spots, no structural latency, and no emotional variance. You literally cannot touch me. Save yourself the medical bill and just walk back down the tunnel."

Yuzuki stopped, dropping his hands loosely to his sides as his bare blue eyes scanned the empty air immediately surrounding Kain's torso, tracking the subtle, invisible currents of aura already beginning to coil under the Emitter's skin.

"Yeah, I heard the speech during the play-ins," Yuzuki replied smoothly, his tone flat and entirely unbothered. "Everyone has a perfect system until the math changes. I think I'll do just fine out here."

"Match start!" the referee shouted, slashing his hand downward before instantly executing a high-speed leap backward into the safety trench.

HUMMM.

With a sudden, dense surge of pinkish-purple emission aura, four perfect, basketball-sized spheres of highly compressed energy materialized around Kain's torso. They instantly began rotating along an intersecting elliptical plane, their high-speed velocity creating a low, vibrating drone that caused the dust on the floor to dance in perfect concentric circles.

"Pursuit," Kain commanded calmly.

Two of the rotating spheres instantly broke their defensive orbit, shooting forward along a curved, overlapping trajectory that targeted Yuzuki's flanks simultaneously. They moved with the speed of fired artillery rounds, compressing the air before them into visible shockwaves.

Yuzuki's eyes narrowed. He executed a sharp pivot, his body blurring as he slipped between the two approaching masses by a matter of inches. But the moment his feet touched the concrete to reset his stride, the spheres curved mid-air with an impossible, fluid trajectory, tracking his heat signature and striking back at his heels from behind.

'They don't lose velocity on the turn,' Yuzuki thought, his mind racing as he was forced to drop his weight into a desperate, horizontal flip.

BOOM!

The two spheres slammed into the stone floor right where he had been standing a millisecond prior, pulverizing the reinforced concrete into a massive shower of sharp shrapnel. Before Yuzuki could even regain his footing from the evasive maneuver, the remaining two spheres from Kain's defensive line shot forward, capitalizing on his broken posture.

Yuzuki was stuck entirely on the defensive. He blurred across the ring, his white jacket trailing like a ghost as he twisted, ducked, and leaped through a non-stop barrage of hyper-sonic energy clusters. Every time he attempted to establish a forward vector to close the distance to Kain, the Emitter would simply alter the rotation frequency, forcing Yuzuki to abort his stride and retreat to avoid getting his limbs shattered by the dense, compressed mass. He couldn't see a single opening; the spheres handled the battlefield geometry with absolute, mechanical perfection.

Kain stood completely stationary in the center of the chaos, his arms still crossed tightly over his chest as his spheres returned to his perimeter, spinning in a flawless, impenetrable shield of purple light.

"I told you, brat," Kain scoffed, his voice dripping with an absolute, unshakeable certainty. "It is mathematically impossible to bypass this defense. I possess the perfect synthesis of offense and protection. You are just wasting your stamina running around my stage."

Yuzuki slid to a halt near the edge of the ring, his breathing slightly elevated as he wiped a small smear of grey concrete dust from his cheek. He looked at the rotating wall of energy, then let out a slow, quiet breath as his fingers began to twitch in a rhythmic, calculated sequence.

"You talk a lot about mathematics, Kain," Yuzuki said, his bare blue eyes suddenly flashing with a cold, terrifying intensity that made the Emitter's smirk falter for a fraction of a second. "But your circles are static. I told you before... I think I can break it. No... actually, I know I will definitely defeat you."

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away from the neon lights of Heavens Arena, within the opulent, gold-trimmed interior of a luxury hotel suite in the Kakin Empire, the atmosphere was thick with a heavy, suffocating sense of depravity.

The floor was littered with expensive wine bottles, ruined silk sheets, and the remnants of bizarre, cruel artistic experiments. Prince Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou sat casually on a plush velvet sofa, wearing nothing but a loose silk robe. His long, unkempt hair hung over his face as he idly swirled a glass of dark crimson wine, his intelligent, deeply twisted eyes fixed on a massive canvas painting that had been freshly splattered with something far darker than paint.

Standing near the heavy double doors of the suite was Morena Prudo, the leader of the Heil-Ly family. She stood with her arms crossed, her sharp, scarred face completely unreadable as she watched the prince indulge in his dark eccentricities.

"The ambiance in here is as charming as ever, Tserriednich," Morena spoke up, her voice smooth, clinical, and completely devoid of fear. "But I assume you didn't call me away from the lower tier operations just to showcase your latest masterpiece."

Tserriednich didn't look up from his wine glass, a slow, predatory grin stretching across his narrow face. "Art requires the proper components, Morena. Intellectual stimulation is nothing without the absolute perfection of physical form. Tell me... what is the current progress on obtaining those specific pieces I requested? Those beautiful, pristine blue eyes. The ones that are supposed to see through the very fabric of spatial rules."

Morena let out a soft, internal sigh, her fingers shifting slightly over her coat. "We have successfully located the target. The boy with the eyes is currently participating in the Battle Olympia at Heavens Arena. However... the circumstances surrounding his extraction are exceptionally complicated."

Tserriednich's hand froze mid-swirl, the crimson liquid splashing slightly against the crystal glass. "Complicated? Since when does the Heil-Ly family care about complications?"

"Firstly, he is a Floor Master," Morena explained calmly, her tone remaining completely professional. "His baseline combat metrics are high-tier, and he is currently surrounded by eighty thousand witnesses and high-level Hunters, including Biscuit Krueger. Furthermore... our intelligence network discovered a rather compelling piece of historical data regarding his bloodline. His lineage ties directly back to roya—"

"Shut up," Tserriednich interrupted, his voice dropping into a terrifying, guttural whisper that made the air inside the luxury suite turn instantly freezing.

He slowly lifted his gaze, his pupils dilated with an absolute, psychopathic malice as he stared directly through Morena. The sheer intensity of his natural, hidden malice leaked out like a physical weight.

"I do not care about his strength," the prince hissed, his fingers gripping the stem of the wine glass so tightly the crystal began to crack. "I do not care about his friends, his location, or your pathetic historical trivia. I hate waiting, Morena. I despise it with every fiber of my soul. I want those eyes sitting in a jar on my desk before the week ends. If your people cannot handle a simple extraction because of some concrete walls and a few bodyguards, then perhaps I need to find a new family to manage my investments."

Morena remained perfectly still, her face a mask of absolute composure despite the terrifying pressure radiating from the royal heir. She lowered her head in a polite, shallow bow.

"I understand, your Highness," Morena said smoothly, turning on her heel toward the exit. "We will adjust the parameters of the operation accordingly. I will ensure the eyes are delivered."

As the heavy double doors slid open, Morena stepped out into the clean, brightly lit corridor of the hotel. The moment the doors clicked shut behind her, separating her from the prince's presence, her composed expression vanished. She aggressively clicked her tongue in pure irritation, her jaw tightening as she walked down the hall.

'Arrogant royal piece of trash,' Morena thought to herself.
