Chapter 63 - Vol 2, Chapter 11: The Mind Begins to Slip

The deeper they went, the less the world made sense.

The Gravity Distortion Zones didn't ease them in.

They escalated.

What began as simple directional pulls became layered, chaotic fields that overlapped without warning. One step would drag them sideways. The next would invert their sense of balance entirely. The next would attempt to rip them off the path altogether.

There was no rhythm.

No consistency.

Yuzuki moved like someone rewriting his understanding of movement with every step.

His body tilted unnaturally along invisible axes. At times, he walked with his torso leaning forward while his legs fought a pull that didn't align with anything resembling "down." At others, he was forced to twist mid-step, adjusting his center of gravity on instinct alone.

A miscalculation here wasn't a stumble.

It was disappearance.

Stone vanished beneath them into a depth that swallowed light whole. One wrong step, one delayed reaction and there would be no recovery.

Menchi moved just ahead of him now.

Cleaner.

More efficient.

But even she wasn't untouched by it.

A sharp shift—

Her footing slipped for half a second—

Her body jerked sideways violently—

Then she corrected.

Barely.

Yuzuki saw it.

"…You good?"

"Focus," she snapped.

Which meant yes.

He smirked faintly.

Then his expression sharpened again as the next distortion field loomed.

This one—

Felt wrong.

Even before he stepped into it.

"…Wait."

Menchi stopped instantly.

"What is it?"

Yuzuki didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he crouched low, pressing his hand against the stone. His eyes narrowed, not at the ground, but at the space ahead.

"…This one's different."

Menchi's gaze hardened. "How?"

Yuzuki picked up a shard of broken rock and tossed it forward.

The moment it entered—

It didn't just shift.

It accelerated.

Violently.

Pulled downward—

Then sideways—

Then slammed into a distant platform with enough force to shatter it.

Both of them watched the debris scatter into darkness.

Yuzuki exhaled slowly.

"…Stacked acceleration fields."

Menchi clicked her tongue.

"…Meaning?"

"Meaning if we get caught wrong," Yuzuki said, "we don't just fall, we get launched."

Menchi's lips pressed into a thin line.

"…Great."

Yuzuki stood.

Cracked his neck once.

"…Alright. Same principle."

Menchi glanced at him. "You sound confident."

"I'm not," he said honestly. "But standing here won't help."

He stepped forward.

And immediately—

The world twisted.

His body was yanked downward—

He adjusted—

Then sideways—

He shifted again—

Then forward—

He pushed into it—

Each force colliding into the next.

His muscles strained.

His balance teetered on a knife's edge.

But he didn't stop moving.

Didn't hesitate.

Menchi followed right behind him, matching his pace, trusting his read.

Step.

Shift.

Step.

Correct.

Step—

The ground vanished beneath Yuzuki's foot.

Gone.

A distortion.

His body dropped—

Then was violently redirected upward—

His stomach lurched—

'Damn it—'

He twisted mid-air—

Forced his body into alignment—

Then slammed his foot down onto the next stable surface.

The impact echoed.

For a second—

Everything held still.

Then he exhaled.

"…Okay," he muttered. "I really hate this one."

Behind him, Menchi landed as well, her breathing slightly heavier now.

"…No arguments."

They didn't speak after that.

Didn't need to.

The rest of the zone demanded everything.

Every ounce of focus.

Every fragment of control.

By the time they reached the end—

Both of them stopped.

Yuzuki leaned forward slightly, hands on his knees, breathing steady, but deeper than before.

Menchi rolled her shoulder once, then twice.

"…That," she said, "was worse than the Echo Beasts."

Yuzuki straightened slowly.

"Yeah."

Then—

He frowned.

"…You smell that?"

Menchi froze.

"…Yeah."

It was faint.

At first.

Barely noticeable.

A soft sweetness carried through the air.

Not unpleasant.

Actually—

It was… comforting.

Warm.

Familiar.

Yuzuki's eyes narrowed.

"…That's not good."

Menchi nodded slowly.

"…Aroma-Induced Hallucinations."

The words hung between them.

The sweetness grew stronger.

Subtly.

Gradually.

It didn't rush.

Yuzuki exhaled through his nose once.

Then again.

"…It's not overwhelming yet."

"No," Menchi said. "This is just the outer layer."

Yuzuki rolled his shoulders slightly.

"Meaning it gets worse."

Menchi didn't answer.

They started moving again.

Slower this time.

More cautious.

Not because of the terrain—

But because of themselves.

The scent deepened.

Layered.

Complex.

Yuzuki frowned.

'What is that…'

It reminded him of something.

Something distant.

Something… familiar.

He shook his head slightly.

"…Don't focus on it."

Menchi's voice cut in immediately.

"Stay grounded."

"I am."

"Then don't let it in."

Yuzuki nodded once.

But even as he did—

The scent shifted.

Changed.

Refined.

It wasn't just pleasant anymore.

It was personal.

And that's when he realized—

'It's adapting.'

Not physically.

But perceptually.

It wasn't just a smell.

It was something that felt like memory.

Yuzuki's steps slowed slightly.

Not enough to stop.

But enough.

"…This is worse than the gravity zones," he said quietly.

Menchi didn't disagree.

"…Way worse."

Because this—

This wasn't something you could fight with your body.

A faint sound reached Yuzuki's ears.

Soft.

Familiar.

"…Yuzuki…"

His head turned slightly.

"…Don't."

Menchi's voice was immediate.

Sharp.

Grounding.

Yuzuki blinked once.

Then frowned.

"…Yeah. I know."

But his heart had skipped.

Just once.

The scent deepened again.

And this time—

The world shifted.

The edges of the cavern blurred.

Just slightly.

The bioluminescent glow softened.

Warmer.

Almost… nostalgic.

Yuzuki clenched his jaw.

'No.'

He exhaled slowly.

Controlled.

Focused.

But even then—

Another voice came.

Closer.

"…You've grown…"

Yuzuki's eyes widened a fraction.

Not because of the words.

But because of the feeling behind them.

Real.

Too real.

Menchi grabbed his arm.

Hard.

"Don't look."

He hadn't realized he was about to.

His gaze snapped forward again.

Breathing steady.

Controlled.

"…This is insane."

Menchi's grip tightened slightly before she let go.

"This is why people don't come back."

Yuzuki didn't respond.

Because for the first time since entering the Cathedral—

He understood.

The Echo Beasts tested perception.

The Gravity Zones tested control.

But this—

This tested self.

Your mind.

Your past.

Your weaknesses.

And the deeper they went—

The stronger it would get.

Yuzuki exhaled slowly.

Then smiled faintly.

Not out of confidence.

But resolve.

"…Alright."

Menchi glanced at him.

"What?"

He looked forward.

Eyes steady.

Focused.

"…This one's going to be annoying."

Menchi almost laughed.

Almost.

Then she nodded.

"…Yeah."

And together—

They stepped deeper into a place that didn't just want to kill them—

But wanted to break them first.
