Chapter 22 - Story–1: Mighty Ξchø (chapter 21)

Chapter 21: Dance of Steel

The central antechamber had a near corporeal quality to the air with the level of tension disrupting the normal state of things. The polished stone of the floor glistened from the glow of flickering torches alongside the walls; as the shadows cast by the torches moved the cracks in the stone came alive with faint arcs of magical energy incorporated into wards inlaid into the stone. Echo nestled in the corner cloaked in darkness, knife in hand, scanning every detail of the room. Every crack in the stone, every pillar, every flicker of shadow was a conduit for a concealed enemy or would congeal into a clearing before the strike.

"This is it... each movement matters. Each strike has to land."

There were more than a dozen defenders for the sect across the antechamber attempting to close the distance between themselves and Echo. Many had swords, intricate designs and glowing, floating runes etched or drawn into their blades. Others had daggers or short stabbing blades. They moved not as individuals but as a coordinated unit covering multiple lines of defense to disallow any enemy from passing through.

It was well-structured and layered, leaving minimal opportunity to find their way through.

Additionally, their movements were slightly enhanced with the use of magic or force, giving them the tiniest edge over regular fighters with greater training and honed lives.

What Echo had was something neither magic nor force could ever copy; he had planning, intellect, and reflexes enhanced through Overdrive.

It was faithful of him to begin with small, minute movements while testing their patterns.

A tap of the foot, a shift in the shadow, a flicker of movement, each speck of detail was tracked.

As the first attacker took a lunge with a diagonal sword strike, Echo sidestepped, grabbed the wrist, twisted it, and threw the attacker into a column.

It flowed perfectly into a spin-kick, taking out another opponent attempting to circle in from the side.

"Control the angles... only fight on my terms."

Now, the fight was a true dance of steel and shadow:

Echo rolled under a sweeping sword, jumping up to stab the attacker in the thigh with the dagger and temporarily disarming him.

He jumped and vaulted off of a short wall flipping over two enemies in one movement, landing an elbow strike on one enemy and an immediate wrist-lock on the other, using the momentum to disarm both.

Dust and rubble swirled, using the cover to hide his attacks and allowing him to reposition; using the chaos to create space.

Then, multiple attackers moved simultaneously trying to flank him in a pincer.

Echo calculated angles and distances instantly in his mind and used the pillars and debris to break-up their formation.

He spun in mid-air with the daggers drawn and struck pressure points while sending three opponents ablaze into the stone walls as if it were part of a rehearsed dance.

Overdrive flickered into action, boosting Echo's speed and reflexes while not obscuring his mind.

"Numbers don't matter... strategy and precision do."

Now, the room itself was part of the fight:

The chains hanging from the ceiling allowed him to swing over multiple enemies in one fluid motion.

The broken pillars served as springboards for flips and kicks.

The shadows of dark corners provided concealment for quick repositioning, forcing attackers off-balance.

A lieutenant emerged from the back with twin swords humming with a faint magical energy. He lunged to cut Echo off from his mob of attackers.

Echo vaulted aggressively sideways, flipping himself over the downward swing and landed a spinning kick to the torso upon landing.

The lieutenant recovered his strike, aggressively executing a horizontal slash, which was met with a combined parry, lower duck, and immediate counterattack from Echo thanks to his Overdrive reflexes.

The cavalry showed up to demoralize him, but every strike, dodge, and counter was the exacting finish of stunning choreography, or a series of shots compiling into a cinematic flow — an effortless movement-speed where every strike, every dodge, and every counter-attack was telling you he knew exactly where he was at all times and what was going to happen next.

Suddenly the defenders attempted to flank him from all sides.

Echo pivoted, not wasting even half a second before he was spinning to cross-block the downward sword strike and deliver a jab to the stomach of the next attacker with a dagger used prominently for throwing.

A moment later Echo pushed off the wall and fired downward creating additional distance from the combatants by flipping over two of them while artfully deploying a downwards dagger thrust that simultaneously landed precisely against the lateral edge of another's neck.

Everything about the entire moment was that he could calculate every distance, every strike and counter-timing moments — Overdrive provided speed without recklessness.

Then, magically, projectiles started erupting from wards embedded along the bricks of the walls.

Echo timed a series of flips perfectly dodging the magical blasts, primarily left to buckle and adjusting focus on pilons for cover initially.

He rolled to the side, grabbing a dagger from the floor and threw it with exact timing that knocked a weapon from the attacker mid-swing.

Driven by momentum, he launched into a spinning kick, felling yet another enemy into the rubble, gaining a split-second reprieve.

"Every attack…every step… I command this battlefield."

With every minute that passed in the battle, Echo used the environment to create the most advantageous situation.

Chains swinging permitted him to attack while still engaging from a distance.

Sections of the flooring collapsed beneath oppositional enemies, effectively using hazards as traps.

Vaults and spins used all the energy the enemies directed at him, either causing the attacker to tumble into one another or headfirst into the wall.

At that point, it was just a matter of time as he continued to gain ground:

All of which he took care to increase with non-lethal blows, rendering everyone unconscious but alive.

He moved as fast as blurs, executing every strike from every angle perfectly every time.

Echo moved carefully but steadily forward, making his way towards the inner sanctum occupied by Soso.

Even against overwhelming odds, Echo remained calm, methodical, and positive that he was always one step ahead.

Every attack had a counter. Every motion could be anticipated.

Overdrive only ever surged as far as it needed to go, augmenting speed, strength, and endurance and then receding to maintain control.

His situational awareness was extending outside of the immediate combat zone, predicting reinforcements, environmental traps, and magical hindrances.

At the end of the battle zone, it lay in stochastic, but controlled chaos:

The defenders lay incapacitated, some unconscious, weapons scattered across the floor scattered where he had passed, a fine layer of dust marking his path as he managed to control an escalating situation.

His breathing became regular and metered, the coy of the body now firm and drawn, his eyes began to take shape straight ahead.

Before them stretched the portal to the rite chamber — the last barrier to Soso.

"Dance of Steel... complte. And now, the last step... Soso I am coming."

With conscious and deliberate balance, dagger ready, muscles taut and Overdrive just beneath the skin's surface, Echo advanced towards the heart of the Abyssal Sect, ready for the final confrontation that would be Soso's fate.
