At the end of a narrow passage, partially hidden in shadow, was what he had been searching for.
It was the confession chamber.
A solid mahogany door reinforced with iron bands stood recessed into the wall.
On the door, faded carvings of scales and chained hands were etched into its surface. A small metal grille near eye level allowed voices to pass through without revealing the speaker.
This was where sinners came to confess behind a locked door. Leo stepped forward and gripped the handle. He pulled the door open.
Then he turned, and without any explanation, caught Shadow by the arm, and dragged her inside the confession room.
Shadow gasped, stumbling forward. Before she could regain her balance, Leo stepped in right behind her and pulled the curtain shut.
He grabbed the heavy iron latch on the inside of the wooden door and slammed it home.
