Sunday evening.
Jianglan City, Lijing District.
Huang Hongbo had just returned home after sending their daughter back to school, only to find his wife sitting in the living room, holding a passbook, looking displeased.
"Hongbo, I have something to tell you!"
Li Juan said angrily.
"What is it?" Huang Hongbo was a bit puzzled.
"Take a look at Panpan's passbook yourself!"
Li Juan stuffed the passbook into her husband's hand.
In the early 21st century, banks still offered integrated card-passbook services.
This meant that the bank card and passbook of the same account were interchangeable, allowing transactions with either.
When Huang Panpan was too young to open a bank account, Li Juan used her own name to open both a card and passbook for her daughter. Panpan received the card, while she kept the passbook.
Huang Hongbo glanced at the passbook and noticed the balance, looking slightly surprised.
"Why is there so little left?"
