"Naruto: Ice God"Chapter 93: Yamato
To put Danzo's meaning in simple terms: you're too naive, kid.
Strategy—do you understand strategy?
It's easy to imagine that if Feng Bai could sign a summoning contract with Enma, his opening move would definitely be "Knock-knock," "Enma," "Fire Dragon Flame Bullet"—and if you dare use a substitution, I'll hit you with a Five-Element Grand Combo...
Ahem, that's basically the gist of it.
"This child is Jia. I... found him. He possesses the Wood Release Bloodline Limit."
After lecturing Feng Bai, Danzo shifted the topic to Jia.
Watching the old man sit across from him spouting nonsense with complete seriousness, Feng Bai nearly couldn't suppress his laughter.
Right, right—you just "found" a Wood Release Bloodline Limit user, huh? Maybe if I take a trip to Kirigakure, I can "find" an Ice Release Bloodline Limit too.
Wait... wasn't I actually found by Sakumo in exactly that way?
While Feng Bai was lost in random thoughts, Danzo quietly observed his son's reaction.
Seeing Feng Bai show no particular response to the mention of "Wood Release," Danzo felt puzzled.
"Do you understand what Wood Release represents?"
Not receiving the reaction he expected, Danzo took the initiative to question Feng Bai.
"I know—it's the secret technique mastered by the First Hokage, said to be capable of controlling the Nine-Tails."
Seeing Danzo ask him directly, Feng Bai sat up straight and recited the textbook answer word for word.
That reaction...
Now it was Danzo's turn to be stumped.
He had revealed Jia's identity to Feng Bai specifically to test whether, after years under Hiruzen's guidance, Feng Bai would side with him or Hiruzen upon encountering a Wood Release ninja. But based on his observations, this kid didn't seem to care about the matter at all?
"I intend to keep this child by my side. You..."
Danzo decided to continue probing his "foolish" son.
"Mm-hmm, okay."
Feng Bai nodded enthusiastically.
Keep him if you want—why ask me? I'm not the Root leader.
He doesn't eat my food or drink my water. Do whatever you want, old man.
"It would be best not to tell Hiruzen about this..."
"Mm-hmm, okay."
"And don't let anyone else know..."
"Mm-hmm, okay."
"..."
"..."
With nothing more to say, Danzo and Feng Bai stared at each other in awkward silence.
Feng Bai had figured it out—this little guy wasn't Danzo's second child, but rather Captain Yamato, who would suffer under Kakashi's "care" in the future.
Honestly, while grown-up Yamato looks like he stepped out of a horror film, as a child he's actually quite adorable.
Feng Bai waved toward Jia, who hesitated and glanced at Danzo. Seeing no objection, he slowly approached Feng Bai.
"Up you go."
Feng Bai scooped Jia up and placed him on his lap, pinching his cheek with a smile before asking Danzo in a testing tone: "Dad, calling him Jia all the time sounds boring. Let me give him a proper name."
"As you wish."
Whether Jia or any other name made no difference to Danzo. What mattered was that the Wood Release ninja must remain under his control and, eventually, obey Feng Bai's commands.
Only then could the Nine-Tails be restrained and serve as a weapon of war for Konoha.
"Alright, I'll call you Yamato."
With Danzo's approval, Feng Bai bestowed upon the little one the name he would only receive years later, smiling as he watched for a reaction.
"Mm... yes."
Yamato didn't particularly care for the name, but looking at this smiling big brother, he found himself nodding in agreement almost instinctively.
"Excellent! Yamato, let your big brother Feng Bai show you around Konoha for some fun!"
Seeing Yamato agree, Feng Bai didn't wait for further response—he grabbed the boy's hand and dashed toward the exit.
Danzo: "???"
What happened to not letting outsiders know about this?
What about keeping this kid's existence hidden?
You brat—how could you forget my instructions so quickly?!
Watching the two leave, Danzo was about to explode, but then remembered Feng Bai's recent achievements. He snorted coldly and ultimately let them go.
"Hmph, let the kid enjoy himself for a few days."
...
"Who are you?"
Following his memory to the village's edge, Feng Bai searched around for quite a while before spotting the building nestled in the forest by its rising smoke.
"Who are you?"
A boy's voice called out. Looking toward the sound, Feng Bai saw a big-nosed little boy watching him warily, protectively shielding several children of various ages behind him.
"Um, is this an orphanage?"
Looking at the big-nosed kid, Feng Bai crouched down to signal he meant no harm.
"Y-yes, so what..."
The boy stiffened his neck, trying to appear fearless—like a mother hen protecting her chicks.
"Urushi, what's happening?"
Hearing the commotion, the matron pushed open the door. Before she could understand the situation, she spotted Feng Bai wearing his Konoha forehead protector.
"A ninja? Why would you appear in this place... What are you here for?!"
Realizing Feng Bai's identity, the matron hurried forward, demanding to know his intentions.
Why is this getting more complicated?
I just brought a kid here to play!
Besides, I'm a kid myself—can't you adults stop being so tense?
Spreading his hands, Feng Bai stood there awkwardly, wondering where to begin his explanation.
Until Nonoyu's voice rang out.
"Is that Feng Bai?"
...
"When did you return to the village?"
Placing a cup filled with tea in front of Feng Bai, Nonoyu smiled as she inquired about the young man.
Compared to before the war's outbreak, Feng Bai now carried a colder aura. Though his face still wore that familiar smile, his overall presence was no longer as gentle as before—no wonder the children and staff felt nervous.
"This morning. I came straight here to see you as soon as I got back."
Picking up the cup, Feng Bai drained the water in one gulp, then handed it back with complete familiarity: "Sis, another cup please. I wasted all my saliva explaining things to that chubby matron."
"Kelly is our most conscientious staff member. Since she's never met you before, naturally she had to question this little troublemaker thoroughly."
Smiling as she accepted Feng Bai's cup, Nonoyu took advantage of getting up to refill it to glance outside at Yamato, who was surrounded by curious children.
"That child is a new Root member, isn't he?"
"Cough, yes. How did you know, Sister Nonoyu?"
Caught off guard by her question, Feng Bai was curious how she'd identified Yamato's background.
"Because of his aura, of course. When I joined Root, I wasn't much older than that child." Nonoyu gave a self-deprecating laugh. Whenever she recalled her time in Root, she was overwhelmed by an intense sense of suffocation.
