Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 The Secret Weapons

General Rolith was leading the right flank, Cedric with him, and General Dorvik was leading the left flank with Knight Commander Rodric. The main army was led by the Grand General Orvyic himself; on the enemy front, General Alviz led the army. The rain started pouring more as the battle began. The plain area was muddy and smelled of fresh earth. The enemy seems to have roughly 15 thousand troops, as said in the report, but since they arrived sooner, they had the advantage of laying traps and hiding their soldiers in the forested areas

The soldiers got into formation, and the first wave of soldiers, the conscripted ones from the left flank, were sent, their hearts racing. One of the soldiers cried for his mom, and another tried to retreat but was shot with an arrow by his own side. The enemy force was just as afraid, the battle was bloody, chaotic and unorganised.

On the right flank, it was 5 thousand vs 2.5 thousand. General Rolith sent two waves of conscripts without reinforcement to gauge the enemy strength and used them to clear the traps set by the enemy. He concluded that the enemy was weaker than expected. Now, with the traps cleared, he moved his entire army. Cedric, with his 1075 army, was ordered to take the flank, while Rolith led the charge. The enemy startled as 5000 soldiers charged at them straight on. One of the enemy soldiers tripped and fell on his fellow soldier, as he froze on the ground, terrified of the incoming force. Then darkness consumed him as Rolith's force collided with the enemy force.

Cedric diverted from the main force, moving far into the enemy line from the right, he was now able to see the right flank of the enemy in its entirety "Now Rhydan and Fenric" Cedric shouted, 300 archers released a volley of arrows onto the enemy from their flank, the enemy had tried to interfere by sending their own flank but it didn't stand a chance against Cedric's infantry, considering they were vastly outnumbered and poorly trained, the bulk of their force had to remain and fight Rolith's army. The arrows kept pouring in from the flank of the enemy as Rolith's army crushed ten from the front.

Shouts could be heard from the enemy soldiers, "Let's retreat." "We will all die…hel…" he couldn't finish his sentence as his head was sent flying off with a precise strike. "Torric and Draviz move with 400 infantry," Cedric commanded with a sharp voice, "Silgard, you stay here with 200 infantry and defend the archers and Rhydan move position so you don't hit us, Lucen, you come with me, we will charge with the Cavalry (150)." They all chanted "Aye." Silgard nodded.

Cedric charged with his 150 Calvary, Lucen beside him. He moved to the rear side of the enemy and flanked them from there, hit and run, hit and run, he continued the process until he significantly weakened the enemy vanguard, not only physically, but it was a psychological attack as well; he made them feel helpless.

Orlen set out to gather intel on the other battlefield and report it back to Cedric. Selara took care of the wounded in the right flank HQ. As the right flank army slowly chipped away at the enemy force from two directions, sustaining relatively fewer casualties, "We are getting close to victory, the enemy force is weakening, and their commander's elite force is collapsing. Everyone listen target their command there, and we will win." The army morale was high with victory in sight, roaring back.

Mud splattering on the ground along with blood, gut scattered on the ground, and the deceased's head crushed from the stomping. It was the bloodiest war in Dravem's history. Across the right flank, General Dorvik was taking it easy. He sent small waves of conscripts to their deaths like it was entertainment. Rodric, seeing this, rode towards Dorvik, his neck tense. "General Dorvik, what is the meaning of this? The enemy soldiers are outnumbered and ill-trained; we can triumph over them with simple maneuvers. Would you stop sending these poor men to their death?"

General Dorvik clenched his teeth, his arm folded. "Be quiet, Rodric, you think you can run your mouth just because you are now a Knight Commander? Go back to your post." Rodric's grip tightened on his horse's lead rope. "Very well then, do as you please." General Dorvik made a dismissive gesture with his hand, "Shushh shushh."

A few hours passed Dorvik continued to toy with his conscripts and no progress was made on the right flank, a messenger from the main army arrived "The Grand General Orvyic has ordered you to attack the enemy force immediately," Dorvik clenched his teeth tighter this time, he spits on the ground "Tell the Grand General to wait a little longer," as he tabs his shoulder with his finger like he was waiting for something, a young advisor of general Dorvik speak up "If you are waiting for the enemy to make the first move you will be waiting for eternity, since they are at a disadvantage they would only defend, a basic military tactic."

Dorvik lashes out this time, "I know you, idiot, do you think I am a fool? Get out of my sight." As Dorvik stays dormant, the main army makes its move: four thousand infantry move forward, 500 cavalry take the flank, and 2000 archers move closer. The enemy prepared their archers and released a thunder of archers, dealing a considerable blow to the infantry. Their infantry rushed forward to engage. Unlike the flanks, the main army of the enemy was prepared, putting on a good fight.

Their soldiers coordinated together with discipline and composure to counter the Orvyic force; the tide was equal on the main battlefield. Orvyic sent more messengers to both flanks to conclude their battles quickly and flank the enemy's main army. Dorvik's officer grew more impatient, but he remained idle until a distant march could be heard from behind. The man leading the march of 700 or so soldiers rode towards Dorvik, his eyes glimmering. "Father, I have come." Dorvik took a deep breath. "What took you so long, Wilaric?"

Wilaric rubs the back of his head with his hand. "I am sorry we had to repair it on the way." Dorvik, with a sigh, "So you bought it ?" Wilaric nodded. Dorvik said, "Well done, you know what to do." He roared, "Let's move men, infantry move forward, cavalries take the lead, and archers follow up." The cavalry charged ahead, the ground shaking as their hooves contacted with a rhythm. Dorvik charged with a grin on his face, "Charge men!! Crush the enemy!

Over at the left flank, the wind had shifted, Rolith pushing from the front and Cedric flanking the enemy from the right, both closing on the enemy commander, but the enemy commander didn't back down; he held his ground. Suddenly a scout came over to Rolith's army "They have hidden cavalry on the forested line in our rear" chills went through their spine, Rolith voice cracked "What ?? HOw is that possible, what were the scouts and the soldiers tasked to prevent such scenarios doing?" the scout trembling his voice quivering "They were all disappeared" as Rolith was perplexed by the situation. A sudden movement could be seen from the forested line, and an army of cavalry charged towards them, better equipped and in good formation; they ran through Rolith's rear swiftly.

Rolith gathered himself and commanded some of his men to redirect. Cedric saw the Cavalry pouring in and rushed to help. The mud splattered violently as the enemy cavalry charged full speed, blood pouring in everywhere they went and bodies getting trampled. Multiple spears were thrown, and they flew at high speed. The energy gathered from the movement of the horse, one of the spears, went right through Rolith's head. Silence consumed the battlefield. The cavalry group redirected for retreat, and as the soldiers saw their general fall, they were stunned. The enemy soldiers cheered so loud it echoed through the whole battlefield and beyond it.

The enemy cavalry managed to break free and retreat. Cedric's archers and infantry were in places to block their retreat, and Cedric himself, with his cavalry, rode swiftly towards them. To everyone's surprise, another batch of cavalry entered from the forest, hitting Cedric's archer and infantry from the rear, causing chaos. Cedric hit the rear of the first cavalry batch, cutting them off from the rest and effectively wiping them out, but the remaining managed to escape from the rear of the enemy, joining the main force.

Cedric swallowed hard. "This can't be! What shall we do, Lucen! The enemy morale has increased significantly all over the battlefield as we speak, the news is spreading, and simultaneously, our morale is decreasing." Lucen takes a deep breath. "Sir, we can still win, though their spirit may have risen; we still have the tactical advantage." Cedric gripped, tightening on his horse's lead rope. "We can't afford to lose any more soldiers."

As all of it unfolded, the sunset with a bright orange glow, the drizzling from earlier had left a random pattern, and the temperature dropped just as the countless lifeless bodies on the ground. Then another similar cheer tore through the sky this time from the left flank, "Which side?" everyone on the other side asked themselves. "Magnificent," uttered General Dorvik, looking at the grotesque sight of the impaled body, which was crushed beyond recognisable. Some of the enemy soldiers howled, "General Mouriz! General Mouriz!" As the cheer from General Dorvik's any got louder.

Wilaric roared, "An excellent shot!" as the soldiers loaded the next bolt with the creaking of rope and wood, set it into the track and loaded it and another shot fired, another one and another one all in sequence from different directions. Bolting through the grieving army, piercing its formations, someone in the crowd shouted, "What is that monstrous thing?" General Dorvik hollered, "It's a ballista, you rats are doomed, run with your tails tucked." he laughed.
