Chapter 44 - Chapter 40

Renata opened her eyes to the familiar swirl of light, the VR world pulling her in with its strange, weightless embrace. Even though she had trained in the void, her pulse still raced every time she entered this realm, anticipation and caution warring in her chest. The forest stretched before her again, the mist curling like smoke over the ground, but this time, something felt different.

It wasn't just her imagination. The system pinged almost immediately.

ALERT: NEW PLAYER STATUS DETECTED – INCREASED ABILITY RECOGNIZED.

NOTE: OBSERVERS MAY HAVE TAKEN INTEREST.

Renata's lips twitched. Observers. She had expected that eventually, but not so soon. She tightened her grip on the immortal-grade purple blade she had unlocked, feeling the familiar cold surge of chaotic energy as it hummed against her palm. Her training had shown her what she could do—but how the system perceived her, how other players would now perceive her, was another matter entirely.

Movement flickered through the trees. She tensed. Instinct told her not to react, not yet. The forest was silent for a heartbeat, then four figures emerged, their outlines sharp even in the dim glow of the virtual night.

Players. Not NPCs.

Renata had seen them in the rankings before, shadows that moved too smoothly, too deliberately. Their avatars were striking in appearance: one clad in a flowing crimson robe, a talisman hanging at his side; another with blades that glimmered yellow in the faint moonlight. Her pulse quickened. These were not random newbies looking for low-level missions—they were deliberate, elite, possibly scouting her.

The first one stepped forward, voice calm but firm: "You've been busy. Training like that in public spaces… risky."

Renata arched an eyebrow, keeping her stance light but ready. "Is that a warning or an invitation?" she asked, letting the words float like a blade itself.

The red-robed figure's eyes glinted. "Both. Depends on how you respond."

The forest seemed to shrink. Even though she had spent days maneuvering between the trees and building instincts from the puppet simulations, this felt different—alive. The system flared softly at her shoulder, Cherry Blossom whispering: "Rivals detected. Assessing combat potential. Recommendation: Proceed with caution."

Renata exhaled slowly. Caution was a luxury she didn't often have. If they intended to test her, she would respond—but on her terms.

She shifted her stance, feeling the familiar tingle as void energy pooled around her veins, eager to obey her will. Two of the hidden veins throbbed faintly, restless, greedy for more. She could feel the chaotic energy lapping at the edges of her consciousness, waiting for her to let it flow. Not yet. Patience.

The group circled her. One of them—blonde hair, eyes glinting silver—smirked. "I've watched you for weeks. You're not bad, but public training without a challenge is… bold."

Renata tilted her head, curiosity sharp beneath her cautious exterior. "Bold or foolish?" she countered, her blade sweeping in a casual arc that kicked up wet leaves. The purple hue gleamed under the soft moonlight.

A subtle hum from the system confirmed what she had suspected: these players had noticed the new abilities she had honed. Factions may take notice. If they do, expect interference. Prepare for PvP escalation.

Her pulse spiked. Interference wasn't a problem—skill was—but she couldn't let anyone underestimate her. She needed to see exactly what they were capable of before committing to an engagement.

The crimson-robed player tilted his head, circling slowly. "I assume you've learned to fight outside your simulations. The system doesn't lie—it records and observes."

Renata nodded slowly, letting a faint grin curve her lips. "Then I hope your observation hasn't bored you. I'm not here to disappoint."

The group's leader—apparently the same one who had spoken first—paused, as if evaluating her entire presence. "You're different," he finally said. "Not just your stats. There's something… off about you."

Renata's chest tightened ever so slightly. Off? Interesting. Let them wonder. Let them speculate. Secrets were currency, after all.

She flexed her fingers around the hilt. "Curiosity can be dangerous," she said softly. "I suggest you test yours elsewhere."

A flicker of movement, and the first test came—swift, measured, precise. The silver-eyed player lunged, a pair of twin daggers cutting through the wet mist.

Renata's muscles responded before her mind did. She pivoted, letting her blade slice through the air in a wide arc. The purple glow of her weapon collided with the daggers' silver, a faint sound like frozen glass cracking through the night. The strike threw the attacker back a few steps, enough to gauge their strength.

"Not bad," the red-robed figure said, stepping forward, forming a talisman mid-air that flickered with pale light. "But can you keep up?"

The remaining two moved in tandem, testing her flanks and forcing her to move quickly between the dense trees. Branches snapped beneath her weight, leaves tangling in her hair, but she didn't falter. She let instincts guide her, letting past simulations, past fights, past lessons blend into a fluid motion that was entirely her own.

Cherry Blossom: "Player threat assessment: High. Recommend adaptive strategy. You can manage, but avoid exhaustion."

Exhaustion. She didn't like that word. But fatigue was a tool, too—testing endurance and reaction, seeing who would crack first. She twirled, launched herself from a low branch, slashing the nearest attacker and using momentum to swing past the others.

The red-robed player's talisman exploded in light, a concussive shockwave she barely managed to dodge. Leaves and mud rained down around her. She rolled on the wet ground, breathing hard, but a spark of exhilaration ran through her. This was what it felt like to truly be noticed, to be tested.

Finally, the leader stepped back, his stance casual but alert. "Impressive. You're faster than we expected. We'll see how far you go."

Without another word, the group retreated, disappearing into the misty forest as silently as they had appeared.

Renata stayed crouched for a moment, letting the adrenaline settle. Her body hummed with power and energy, every vein alive with sensation. This was only the beginning.

She glanced at Cherry Blossom. "So… they're watching me now. What else?"

The system's tiny humanoid form hovered on her shoulder. "Additional surveillance recommended. Rivals may return in greater numbers. Hidden abilities will be a deciding factor. Suggest incremental training and cautious engagement."

Renata smiled faintly, letting the glow of her blade dim. "Cautious, yes. But not timid. If they want a show… I'll give them one."

And with that thought, she sheathed the purple immortal blade, already anticipating the challenges ahead. The forest around her returned to its quiet rhythm, but she knew the calm was temporary. In the VR world, attention followed strength—and hers had just made a ripple.
