Chapter 36 - Chapter 33

Renata woke to a muted glow in her quarters, the soft hum of the system echoing in the silence. The rain had stopped, but the lingering dampness clung to her skin, a reminder of yesterday's relentless training. Even after hours of rest, her muscles ached, not from fatigue alone, but from the strain of synchronizing her hidden veins with her ordinary ones.

She sat up, brushing her hair from her face. The hazel eyes that sometimes looked so ordinary now held a quiet fire—an echo of the storm she had become. The system floated beside her, its humanoid form slightly translucent, observing her with the faintest hint of concern.

"Host," it said, voice steady, "your performance in the previous session has caused a ripple in the VR rankings. Other users have noticed the increase in your power and efficiency. Several top-tier players may challenge you in the next session. Do you wish to prepare or confront them as is?"

Renata frowned. The thought of confrontation wasn't new, but the stakes had shifted. These weren't simple simulations anymore—they were indicators of how others perceived her strength, and in the VR community, perception often dictated reality.

"I'll prepare," she said. "If I wait until they attack, I'll be reacting. I want to control the battlefield."

The system nodded, a flicker of approval in its form. "Understood. I will adjust your training schedule to increase adaptive difficulty and simulate multiple challengers at once. You will have an opportunity to experiment with combination techniques."

Renata rose, moving to the small mirror on her wall. Her reflection stared back, pale from exertion but unyielding. Each training session felt like a reminder of what she had lost in her first life—and what she refused to lose in this one. The betrayal that had haunted her, the knife that had ended her first life—it fueled her determination. She wouldn't let anyone stand in her way this time.

By mid-morning, she was back in the VR forest, her blade strapped to her side and the faint glow of her harmonized veins barely visible beneath her skin. Today's simulation was different. Multiple portals opened around her, each a gateway from which challengers could appear at any moment. The system had truly stepped up the difficulty, and she could sense that each puppet was no longer acting independently—they were coordinated, almost as if learning from each other's attacks.

Renata tightened her grip. She had to think beyond brute force. Movement, strategy, timing—all would be tested to their limits.

The first wave of challengers arrived. Two puppets lunged simultaneously from the left, another two from the right. She pivoted, slashing one in mid-air while using the icy energy in her palm to sweep the second back into the forest floor. The remaining puppets adjusted immediately, their patterns shifting as if anticipating her every move.

A low hum of satisfaction ran through her veins. The synchronization had worked. She could feel every muscle, every motion, every beat of her heart amplified, flowing seamlessly with the energy coursing through her hidden veins.

And then the unexpected happened.

From one of the portals emerged a human figure—not a puppet. Cloaked, hooded, and silent, they moved with precision, their presence alone disrupting the VR environment. Renata froze, instincts screaming caution. The system immediately flagged the figure as a high-level player with unknown capabilities.

"Caution, Host," it warned. "This user may possess techniques outside the standard VR parameters. Exercise extreme vigilance."

Renata's pulse quickened. The stranger moved as if the forest itself bent to their will, shadows clinging to each step, energy pulsing faintly beneath their cloak. She raised her blade, energy coiling around it like a living thing, and stepped forward.

"You're not part of this simulation," she said, her voice steady despite the tension. "Who are you?"

The figure didn't answer. Instead, they lunged with blinding speed, forcing Renata to react instantly. She blocked the strike, ice cascading from her palm to meet the mysterious force. The clash sent a shockwave through the forest, uprooting small trees and sending debris flying.

Renata felt the power of her hidden veins pushing her further, allowing her to counter attacks she wouldn't have been able to before. Yet even as she moved, she could sense the figure adapting, responding to her energy in ways that no normal player could.

"You're strong… but are you ready?" she muttered under her breath, tightening her grip. Each strike, each step, each counterattack demanded everything she had—and then some.

Minutes passed in a blur of motion. Rain returned briefly in the simulation, adding another layer of challenge as the ground became slick and treacherous. The figure pressed their advantage, forcing her to retreat and rethink her strategy.

It was in that moment, as her mind raced and her body reacted, that she realized the truth: this was no ordinary VR challenge. Someone had entered her session with a purpose.

The system hummed, almost anxiously. "Host… I detect fluctuations in your hidden veins' energy. Someone is probing them."

Renata's eyes widened slightly. That had been… subtle. Too subtle. Whoever this was, they were testing her limits—and perhaps more. She felt the pull of her veins, the chaotic energy that had once been a secret even to her, stretching and flexing, waiting for the moment to release fully.

She gritted her teeth and decided: no longer would she hold back. If this challenger wanted to test her, they would see the full measure of what she could do. Channeling energy from her harmonized veins, she launched a sweeping attack, ice spiraling around her blade, moving with the precision of a dancer and the force of a storm.

The figure blocked, but the force of the attack was undeniable. Even in the VR simulation, the system recorded the extraordinary output. Experience points surged, notifications blipped, and a small warning flashed: High-Level Confrontation Detected.

The challenger stepped back, tilting their head slightly, almost as if intrigued. Renata's heart pounded, exhilaration mixing with caution. She had never faced a player like this, yet the thrill of the unknown, of a worthy opponent, lit a spark within her she hadn't felt in a long time.

The forest around them seemed to hold its breath, the rain ceasing once more as if the VR world itself anticipated the next move. Renata flexed her fingers, her energy coiling tighter, and prepared to strike again.

Because she had learned long ago: in a world where every choice had consequences, hesitation was the luxury of the weak.

And Renata Nasir was no longer weak.
