Chapter 17 - The Silent Warning

Morning broke slowly, as if the sun itself was unsure about rising.

Ira blinked awake, feeling a strange pressure behind his eyes—like someone had been watching him while he slept. The dorm room was quiet, but the air felt heavy.

A knock came at his door.

"Ira, are you awake?" Talia's voice called softly.

He opened the door and saw her standing there, her hair messy, her face pale.

"You felt it too?" he asked.

She nodded. "Yeah… something touched the school's barrier last night. Something strong."

Before they could speak any further, footsteps thundered through the hallway. Students were rushing up and down, whispering in panic.

"I heard the shield cracked!"

"No, it didn't crack—something hit it!"

"I saw a purple flash at the edge of the forest!"

Ira and Talia exchanged a worried look.

"Let's go," Ira said.

The Courtyard Gathering

They stepped outside just as the emergency bell rang—a deep metallic sound that vibrated in their bones. The academy only used this bell when the situation was serious.

Students poured into the main courtyard. Teachers lined the edges with tense faces. Even the birds had gone silent.

The sky overhead was dark gray, swirling slowly like a storm forming from inside a cloud.

The headmaster appeared, walking forward with his long black coat trailing behind him. Normally he looked calm… but today his eyes were sharp and full of concern.

He raised his staff, and the courtyard fell silent.

"Students," he said, his voice firm yet calm, "something touched our magical shield last night."

A soft murmur moved through the crowd.

"It wasn't a creature," the headmaster continued. "It wasn't a spell. It wasn't even human."

The murmurs turned into gasps. Talia's grip on Ira's sleeve tightened.

"What does that mean?" she whispered.

Ira didn't answer. He didn't know.

The headmaster tapped his staff on the ground. A glowing image appeared in the air—like a moving sketch. It showed the academy at night… and a huge shadow touching the shimmering barrier.

The shadow had no shape. No face. Just darkness, shifting like smoke.

And then the image zoomed in—to a symbol left behind on the barrier. A swirling mark that looked like an eye.

Under the symbol, a single word appeared in glowing silver letters:

IRA

Students turned to stare at him. Some frightened. Some curious. Some backing away from him like he was dangerous.

Ira felt his chest tighten.

"Talia… why my name?"

"I don't know," she said, stepping closer to him protectively. "But we're going to find out."

The Headmaster Speaks

The headmaster's gaze settled on Ira. Not angry. Not accusing. Just… studying him.

"Ira," he said suddenly, "you may not realize it yet, but there is something inside you that responds to the rift. Something old."

Ira swallowed, unsure what to say.

"I don't feel anything," he whispered.

"Look at your hand," the headmaster said.

Ira lifted his right hand—and gasped.

His skin was glowing softly, silver light pulsing like a heartbeat under the surface. The veins on his hand looked like thin streams of energy.

Talia stepped back, eyes wide. "Ira… that wasn't there yesterday."

"I don't… I don't know what's happening," Ira said, his voice shaking.

The headmaster approached him slowly, speaking in a quieter voice.

"The rift is opening faster. And whatever is calling your name… is connected to your power. We must prepare you."

"Prepare me for what?" Ira asked.

The headmaster looked up at the swirling sky.

"For the war that is coming," he said. "And for the truth about who you really are."

The Silent Shock

A sudden gust of wind blew across the courtyard. Papers flew. Students stumbled. The clouds above twisted sharply, forming a glowing crack of purple light.

Everyone stared, frozen.

Ira felt the light pull at him—like gravity, like his name written in the sky.

His glowing hand pulsed faster.

Talia grabbed him. "Ira, stay with me!"

"I… I can feel something calling me," he whispered.

The headmaster raised his staff, sealing the sky with a protective spell. The crack closed, but the threat lingered in the air like smoke.

The headmaster looked at Ira with a serious expression.

"The rift has chosen you," he said. "And now we must find out why."

Ira breathed heavily, staring at his hand… wondering if he was still the same person he was yesterday.
