A deeper silence settled inside the cabin.
Dr. Hanson could almost envision the scene: the peaceful valley carved up by intersecting roadways and pipelines, colossal structures rising from the ground, the cold silhouettes of warships hovering in orbit, and the people she knew—clad in uniform work overalls—laboring amid vast machinery and command networks.
This would no longer be a home, but part of a giant machine being activated to serve war and conquest.
Her original illusions of "neutrality" and a "pristine sanctuary for research" were crushed to dust by these words.
She was facing a starkly different logic of power, one that used entire star systems as a chessboard.
"...I... I understand." Her voice sounded somewhat hollow, carrying a dazed heaviness following the massive shock. "This... this is the price and prospect of full cooperation, isn't it? We will no longer belong to ourselves, but to this... plan."
"It is becoming part of a grander, more stable structure, thereby acquiring the qualification and capability to endure through the storm," Osiris corrected her, his tone devoid of comfort, offering only statements of fact.
"The company will dispatch core engineering and management teams to lead the initial construction and reorganization. Your existing administrative framework needs to prepare as quickly as possible for integration and transition. As for the legion deployment orders, I will issue them immediately. The advance forces will arrive within several standard days to begin orbital clearing operations and site selection for the main base."
With that, the discussion reached its conclusion, leaving no further room for negotiation.
Dr. Hanson walked toward the hatch with heavy steps, resting her hand against the doorframe as she turned back to look at Osiris one last time.
Framed by the cool lighting, his figure seemed to merge entirely with the future of iron, energy, and planet-scale operations he had just described.
She stepped out of the shuttle. The night breeze of Haven brushed against her face, yet it could not disperse the profound shock in her heart.
The lights of the settlement in the distance looked, in her eyes at that moment, as small as residual candles in the wind—about to be covered, reshaped, and ultimately swallowed by a far vaster, brighter, yet infinitely colder tide of light.
Haven's sky was irrevocably changed on the seventh standard day following the agreement.
It began with a brief yet extraordinarily brilliant blue flash tearing through the atmosphere—neither a natural phenomenon nor the ripple of a ship's conventional warp jump.
Immediately afterward, a massive, distorted shadow that was nearly impossible to observe directly with the naked eye blanketed Haven's synchronous orbit.
The Eternity's Quest—a giant vessel carrying the technological essence of the ancient Imperium of Man, a Forge Cruiser-class ship belonging to the Adeptus Mechanicus—completely altered Haven's gravitational perturbations with its colossal mass.
Its arrival was noiseless; a perfect silence field and optical camouflage concealed the vast majority of its features, leaving only the possibility that the most sophisticated deep-space scanners might capture that unnatural, starlight-swallowing mass.
Yet Haven possessed no such equipment.
Following closely behind was the arrival of the first wave, composed of multiple heavy landing ships and engineering barges.
They did not land anywhere near the temporary settlement, selecting instead a desolate plain on the opposite side of the planet where preliminary scans indicated a stable geological structure rich in mineral deposits.
Enormous landing pods slammed into the ground, kicking up dust clouds hundreds of meters high like a silent declaration.
When Dr. Hanson, aboard a temporary, fast shuttle of distinctly foreign design provided at Osiris's gesture, flew across half the planet and arrived at the site selected for the "main base," the view before her almost made her forget to breathe.
Across the plain, several metallic structures so vast they inspired awe had already risen from the earth.
These were not traditional architectural structures, but mechanical megastructures filled with sharp angles, exposed piping, and continuous arcs of energy snapping across their surfaces.
A hydraulic apparatus was slowly driving the massive dome of one structure closed, its interior revealing dense flickering lights and moving mechanical arms.
On another side, several giant drills resembling mobile mountains drove thick probes deep into the planet's crust, their low rumbling muffled yet audible even through the shuttle's soundproofing.
In the sky above, several engineering barges used precision cranes to maneuver prefabricated structural modules—the size of small starships—into place.
This was not mere construction; it was the brutal, unbridled growth of a colossal mechanical organism.
The shuttle landed on a relatively low yet exceptionally wide steel platform.
The hatch opened, letting in outside air laden with the scent of burnt metal and ozone. Dr. Hanson descended the gangway, her feet treading upon cold alloy decking covered in anti-slip tread patterns.
She watched as teams of personnel, clad in uniform dark gray sealed suits, moved with synchronized, seamless efficiency between various heavy machines, exchanging virtually no unnecessary speech.
Their efficiency was terrifyingly high, their coordination resembling precision gears. Though their suits bore only simple Far Star Alliance insignia and functional markers without specifying military branches, their discipline and organization far surpassed those of ordinary engineering crews.
Osiris was already waiting there, accompanied by several individuals in similar attire who wore different technical insignia on their shoulders or chests.
One of them wore a transparent visor, revealing a cold, expressionless human male face, though the focus of his eyes appeared distinctly un-human.
"Doctor, welcome to the Node One base," Osiris's voice came through the hum of ambient sound. "These are representatives from the base construction command layer. Engineering progress is twelve percent ahead of schedule."
Dr. Hanson forced her gaze away from the forest of steel rising all around them, her voice somewhat dry: "This... is what you called the 'advance legion' and 'baseline industrial capacity'?"
"This is the infrastructure of the initial phase," Osiris corrected calmly. "The Eternity's Quest is in position, providing orbital energy support, heavy industrial module manufacturing, and deep scans. The surface engineering and security forces deployed by the company have fully initiated the preliminary construction of the planetary defense system and core base."
He pointed toward the distant horizon, where several towering structures with distinct turret outlines were rapidly taking shape: "Those are the foundations for the first batch of surface-to-orbit defense platforms, equipped with long-range mass drivers and laser arrays. In synchronous orbit, a network of monitoring and interception satellites is being deployed. Within a week, Haven's near-space environment will be under total surveillance, possessing initial area-denial capabilities."
He then gestured toward the other side, where a massive, chimney-like facility continuously billowed white steam: "That is the first isotope separation and heavy element refining plant. It will process local raw ore, supplying raw materials for subsequent alloy casting and fusion core production."
Dr. Hanson felt like a child who had strayed into a giants' factory, everything around her far exceeding the scale of her comprehension.
