Chapter 50 - An Emergency

Herkid and Mara looked from the surprisingly stunned Faral to the soundly sleeping Zhu and shook their heads.

They shared the exact same thought. Even back when Faral was nothing more than a disembodied voice echoing inside Zhu's head, the two of them had bantered constantly, their relentless bickering bringing endless laughter to Herkid and Mara. Now that Faral finally possessed a real, physical form—and a remarkably handsome face that Zhu will definitely find annoying—they were both utterly certain they were in for a lifetime of hilarious shenanigans.

Both smiled at their thoughts and went back to their work. While the two worked to settle the food and gather their supplies, Faral stepped toward the edge of the courtyard. He looked beyond the sanctuary's ancient walls, gazing into the vast, silent expanse of Hollowveil's ruins.

Slowly, he raised his hand and unfurled long, slender fingers. A soft blend of blue and violet light flared in his palm, condensing into a delicate, luminous miniature of the Spiritual Spring's lotus—the exact heart of the physical plant.

I have complete control of the lotus, he realized, watching the tiny spectral flower pulse in tandem with his own heartbeat.

Faral glanced back at Zhu, sleeping soundly with the faint trace of a smile lingering on her lips. His heart fluttered with an unfamiliar warmth, settling into a deep, quiet calm as he inhaled a long breath of cool night air.

The prison had become his body. The captive had become its guardian. And for the first time in countless centuries…?

Faral was truly free.

Meanwhile, an emergency was unfolding inside Zhu's mind.

The mindscape, usually a place of boundless twilight and soft grass, felt strangely muted. The sky hung like gray lead overhead, heavy and still.

Inside her inner world, Zhu sat cross-legged on the grass. Beside her, Rose and Thorn were curled up into tight, shadowy balls, purpling faintly in their sleep. Across from them, the miniature lotus spirit floated motionless, its golden eye half-closed as if weighed down by exhaustion.

They had all crept back in, drawn by the strange, unsettling fluctuations rippling through Zhu's mental world.

Something was definitely wrong. It had been sunny and bright just a moment ago—not a single dark cloud in sight—and now heavy thunderheads were rolling in like an impending storm.

Suddenly, a crisp, cold chime resonated directly inside Zhu's skull. It wasn't the warm, expressive voice of Faral, nor was it the playful chime of the lotus.

It was the harsh, mechanical resonance of her Twin System.

A translucent, blood-red interface snapped open directly in front of her face. Red warning glyphs blinked in rapid succession, painting her features in an eerie glow.

[CRITICAL SYSTEM WARNING: HOST VITALITY DEPLETED]

[PARASITIC SYNCHRONIZATION AT 89%]

[WARNING: COMA IMMINENT WITHIN 24 HOURS]

Zhu blinked, rubbing her eyes. "Wait... what? Coma? I'm just tired! We just finished a huge ritual. Faral's free, the array worked—"

[ERROR: Host misunderstands core system architecture.]

[Initiating Diagnostic Explanation...]

Lines of glowing crimson text began to auto-generate across the screen, accompanied by a detailed diagram of a human fetus entwined with a dormant, crystalline parasitic twin.

[ORIGIN RECAP:]

Host Zhu was born with Fetus in Fetu—a undeveloped twin absorbed during gestation.

Upon world integration, the dormant twin manifested not as a living organism, but as the core vessel for your System Interface.

Host is the 'Living Vessel.' The System is the 'Absorbed Twin.'

Zhu stared at the diagram, a cold knot tightening in her stomach. "Okay, gross history lesson aside, I already knew the System was born from my twin's tissue. What does that have to do with me feeling like crap right now?"

[SYSTEM SUSTENANCE DIRECTIVE:]

The System Core does not run on spiritual mana alone. It requires biological essence to sustain host synchronization.

Primary Sustenance: Fresh Blood.

Standard Consumption Rate: 100mL per 30-day cycle.

"Blood?" Zhu's voice pitched up, her eyes wide with shock. "You're telling me you're a blood vampire twin living inside my soul?!"

[CORRECTION: The System maintains host life functions in exchange for biological essence. Under normal conditions, minor bleeding or monthly natural reserves satisfy the Core.]

[CURRENT CRISIS FACTOR 1: Nyxari Cubs (Rose & Thorn) draw a passive 15% siphon on blood reserves.]

[CURRENT CRISIS FACTOR 2: Unprecedented overload of mental space during the Faral Liberation Ritual.]

[RESULT: Biological reserves fully drained. System Core is currently feeding on Host's vital life force to prevent interface collapse.]

The red text flashed violently, turning a deeper, bruised shade of purple.

[CURRENT HOST STATUS: CRITICAL]

Time remaining before irreversible biological shut down (Coma): 22 Hours, 14 Minutes.

Required Intervention: Ingestion or direct systemic integration of high-grade biological blood.

"A day?!" Zhu shrieked, jumping up from the grass. The sudden movement sent a wave of icy dizziness crashing through her mindscape projection. "I have less than a day to drink blood or I fall into a freakin' coma?!"

[AFFIRMATIVE.]

[Advice: Obtain blood immediately upon awakening in the physical world. Failure to replenish will result in permanent vegetative state as the Twin Core consumes Host's brain stem for emergency fuel.]

Zhu stood frozen on the grass, her heart hammering against her ribs. The realization settled over her like a bucket of ice water. The exhaustion she felt wasn't just mental strain from the array, or the cute cubs playing in her head—her own absorbed twin was literally eating her alive from the inside out to stay online.

She looked at her hands in the mindscape, noticing for the first time how translucent and frail they looked.

"Twenty-two hours..." she whispered, terror lacing her voice. "I have to wake up. I have to tell them."

With a desperate surge of will, Zhu forced her consciousness upward, tearing herself out of the quiet mindscape and back toward the physical realm.

The fire crackled softly in the makeshift campsite, casting long, dancing shadows across the ancient stone walls of the sanctuary. Faral sat near the fire, his newly formed fingers holding a wooden bowl with unpracticed care, while Herkid stirred a pot of hot broth while Mara fused at Zhu who seemed to be having a fitful sleep.

Suddenly her eyes flew open.

In the center of the bedrolls, Zhu sat curled up, her knees pulled tight against her chest. Her skin was unnaturally pale, a translucent, waxy white that stood out in stark contrast to the warm firelight. Dark purple circles bruised the skin beneath her eyes.

She stared into the flames, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Twenty-two hours. No, less than twenty hours now.

The System's icy red warning still burned in her mind's eye like a fresh mark. She couldn't tell them the truth—not about the absorbed twin, not about the cold, mechanical System residing in her soul, and certainly not about the terrifying blood-vault mechanism. If she told them she was a host to a biological parasite, would they look at her like a monster?

She swallowed hard, her mouth feeling as dry as ashes.

"Zhu?" Mara's voice was soft, laced with gentle concern. She set down her bandages and leaned forward. "You're trembling. Are you feeling cold? Faral said you just needed rest, but..."

Herkid paused his stirring, looking over with worried eyes. "Yeah, Zhu. You look worse than when you were awake earlier. Is your mindscape hurting?"

Faral set his bowl aside, his luminescent violet eyes fixing squarely on her. "Your spiritual footprint is fluctuating erratically," he noted, his deep voice carrying a sharp edge of scrutiny. "The pathway is closed, yet your vitality is leaking at an alarming rate. What is happening inside you?"

Zhu clenched her fists in her lap, her knuckles turning stark white. The pressure in her chest built until she felt like she was going to burst. Panic—raw, unadulterated terror—snapped her usual calm demeanor.

"It's my mana!" she blurted out, her voice cracking as tears pricked the corners of her eyes.

The trio froze.

Zhu pressed the palms of her hands against her eyes, breathing in ragged, shallow gasps. "My... my core. The way my mana mutated when I was born... it's defective." She lied through her teeth, her voice shaking as she wove the System's demands into a story they could understand. "It—it needs biological essence to stabilize after high-intensity soul work. Usually, it would just slowly drains from me over months. But opening my mind, pulling in the cubs, aiding Faral's binding... it completely burned through my core's reserves."

She looked up at them, her wide, tear-filled eyes terrified and ashamed. "If my core collapses... my vitality will drain completely. The System—my mutated talent—says I have less than a day before I fall into a deep coma. A permanent one."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the campsite.
