Chapter 23 - The Guardian of the Second Gate

The stone door creaked open slowly, revealing another passage hidden beneath the academy. A cold wind rushed out, carrying the smell of old stone and something far older. Ira and Elara exchanged a nervous look before stepping through together.

The tunnel was much darker than the first one. Blue crystals were embedded in the walls, giving off just enough light to guide their way. Every few steps, strange symbols appeared on the ground, but none of them reacted this time.

After several minutes of walking, they reached another chamber. Unlike the first one, this room was perfectly round, with a large circle carved into the floor. In the middle stood a single stone statue holding a long spear.

"It looks peaceful," Elara whispered.

Ira frowned. "That's exactly why I don't trust it."

As they stepped closer, the circle beneath the statue began to glow. Dust fell from its shoulders, and the stone slowly cracked. The statue's eyes opened, shining with a bright golden light.

"You have passed the first trial," the guardian said in a deep voice. "But only those with courage may enter the second gate."

The guardian lifted its spear and pointed it toward Ira. "Show me your heart."

Without another word, it charged.

The spear shot forward with incredible speed. Ira barely managed to dodge, the sharp blade missing him by only a few inches. It struck the ground instead, leaving a deep hole in the stone floor.

Elara raised her hand and fired several beams of light. They hit the guardian's body, but the attacks only left small marks before disappearing completely.

"It's even stronger than the last one," she said.

Ira nodded as he circled the guardian. "There has to be a weak point. Stay back and give me an opening."

The guardian swung its spear in a wide circle. Ira jumped backward while Elara created a shield just in time to block the shockwave. Even with the shield, the force pushed both of them several steps away.

The bond between them suddenly began to glow. Ira felt Elara's determination flowing into him, while she felt his courage. Their breathing slowly became calm as their powers synchronized.

"I think the bond is changing," Elara said softly.

"I feel it too," Ira replied.

The guardian attacked again, but this time Ira reacted much faster. He slipped past the spear and landed a punch against its chest. The guardian barely moved, but a faint crack appeared across its armor.

"There!" Elara shouted. "Keep hitting the same spot!"

The guardian roared and unleashed a powerful wave of energy. The blast threw Ira across the room, crashing him into one of the stone pillars. Pain shot through his body, and for a moment, everything became blurry.

"Ira!" Elara cried as she ran toward him.

"I'm... fine," he muttered, forcing

himself back to his feet.

The guardian was already charging again.

This time, Ira didn't dodge. He ran straight toward it. The spear came down, but Elara created a wall of light at the last second, slowing the attack just enough.

Ira gathered all of his strength into one strike.

"For both of us!"

His fist slammed into the cracked armor.

The guardian froze.

A loud cracking sound echoed through the chamber as golden light burst from the broken armor. The spear fell from its hands, and the giant statue slowly crumbled into pieces.

Silence returned.

A glowing staircase rose from the floor, leading deeper beneath the academy. At the top of the stairs floated another crystal, brighter than the first.

A calm voice echoed through the chamber.

"Second Trial Complete. The path to the truth is now open."

Ira looked at Elara and smiled for the first time in days.

"We're getting closer."

But neither of them noticed the pair of glowing red eyes watching them from the darkness beyond the staircase.

The real enemy had finally arrived.
