Tim's uneasiness was visible to the rest of the team as he frantically going through his contact list trying to find if anyone could get what he wanted, he had already made five phone calls their responses were not helping.
The rest of the team were all looking at Tim's uneasiness he didn't have to this for them but he did anyway —for reasons of his own.
"This isn't going to work" tim said as he put down his phone on the table close to him
"Why?" Godwin asked sitting upright from his chair
"Nobody knows anyone who can get us in that stuff"
Stephanie's eyes went from the drive to the door, beyond which the backhoe was idling. She spoke quietly, her voice tight with revulsion and cold logic.
"We have the key. It's in a bag outside. Doc can retrieve it. The problem isn't the scan… it's the signal."
She turned the drive over in her hand.
"When we scan the retina, this thing will phone home to Valkyrie's server for verification. The moment it does, they'll get two data points: one, that their missing asset is being accessed. And two… the exact geographic location of the signal."
She looked at Godwin, her face pale.
"We can open the drive. But the second we do, we send up the biggest digital flare imaginable. We'd have maybe ten minutes before every contractor on their payroll is converging on this exact scrapyard."
She placed the drive back on the table.
"So the risky idea is this: we do it anyway. We use the eye. But we have to be ready to run the second the data starts downloading. And we have to assume our location is burned forever the moment we hit 'scan.' It's not a hack. It's a digital suicide charge."
Godwin looked at Tim "you think we can do it?
"I don't know but if we are doing it let get our things in order"
Godwin took one final sweep at his team
"Steph" his voice final "do it"
