Chapter 194 - Chapter 190: Shocking!

____________

[— Manga Scene —]

'Even the ordinary Lotus will put a heavy strain on the body…' Even Gai-sensei felt the pressure in that moment, just before Lee made his move.

'Finish this match with this kick, Lee!' That was what Gai-sensei was wishing for in that moment.

"Take this!" Lee shouted as he wrapped Gaara in the bandages and hurled him down toward the ground.

"Secondary Lotus!!" The technique was named as Gaara slammed violently into the ground, dust erupting upward as an enormous crater appeared in the arena floor.

Sakura, Naruto, Kankuro, Temari, and the Sunagakure team supervisor were stunned, while Gai stared in silence.

"I-Is he dead..?" Naruto asked in shock as he stared at the point of impact.

"Impossible, that cannot be!!" Kankuro said in shock.

"Lee-san… has won!!" Sakura said with tense joy.

"...…." Kakashi remained silent as he watched what lay behind the dust.

"…" The same was true for Hayate, the arena proctor.

"Yes!" Gai cheered happily as well.

'Hah… hah…' Lee panted as he watched the wreckage.

Then the cracked sand began to move again.

The layer of sand peeled away from Gaara's cracked face, but to Lee's shock, all that remained was a human shell made of shattered sand.

"When did he switch…? That is impossible!" Gai cried out in shock.

"When you closed your eyes and prayed… and said: please endure the pain… at that time…" Kakashi said calmly as he explained what had happened.

"Hahaha…" Gaara's voice came from behind Lee.

Then Lee froze in place from shock.

[— End Scene —]

When the scene ended, nothing remained in Konoha's art store except the sound of pages being gripped tightly between fingers, because everyone had felt at the moment of the Secondary Lotus that the battle had reached its peak, and then felt in the very next instant that the peak itself had split open beneath their feet.

The feeling of victory had rushed across the hall at full speed, only to rebound with even greater violence when the shell of sand appeared and Gaara's voice came from behind.

At that point, being immersed in the fight was no longer a luxury for anyone; every reader was now stuck in the heart of the arena itself, waiting for the next mistake as though standing on the edge beside him.

The first to move was Maito Dai, but this time his enthusiasm did not burst out as before.

It halted for a moment halfway in his chest, then returned in the shape of a long breath, because he understood at once that Lee had not failed to strike Gaara, but had succeeded to the point of forcing him to use a final means of survival at the exact second he needed it.

"That is the difference between a powerful blow and a correct blow, Gai; Lee pushed Gaara to the point where he was forced to hide inside a new defense at the last moment." Dai said, his eyes glowing as he fixed his gaze on the final page.

As for little Gai, he had bent over the volume until he nearly touched the ink, and his face remained caught between amazement and agitation, because the Lotus that had seemed to him a moment ago like the end of the battle had suddenly turned into the beginning of an even greater shock.

"If Gaara survived that strike, then it means Lee-san is now fighting an opponent who cannot be brought down just once, but must be understood faster than he changes." Gai said in a tight voice.

Sakumo, who watched the transition more carefully than the impact itself, was not astonished by the severity of the technique as much as he paused at the timing of the substitution, because the most important thing on the page for him was not the crater, but that tiny moment when Lee's eyes closed while he believed the match had already been decided.

"In real battles, the most dangerous moments are not the moment of attack, but the moment you convince yourself that the attack ended everything." Sakumo said with decisive calm.

Little Kakashi did not comment at once. His gaze remained suspended between his father's statement and the explanation from the older Kakashi within the scene, then he slowly let out his breath after arranging the idea in his mind.

"Gaara did not survive through strength alone. He survived because he exploited the one moment when Lee's eyes stopped watching him." Kakashi said in a short, dry tone.

And in the seats reserved for the village elders, Hiruzen leaned slightly forward.

The effect of the shock was not visible on his face so much as it was visible in the depth of his concentration, because he saw in this chapter a lesson about the limits of finishing a battle, not the limits of strength.

"This scene does not say that Lee was wrong to think his opponent had been defeated. It says that some opponents possess a way of making their defeat extraordinarily difficult." Hiruzen said in a low voice.

Danzo, whose expression had changed only slightly, cast a cold look at the sandy shell and then returned his gaze to the image of Lee frozen in place, as though what truly drew his attention was not the survival itself, but its immediate psychological effect on the fighter.

"A fighter who builds everything on a single blow puts himself in grave danger if his opponent survives it with awareness intact."

Danzo said sternly and without emotion, then turned toward the next chapter without further comment.

When the name of the Secondary Lotus rose in the scene, Jiraiya had smiled at first at that beautiful madness he loved in taijutsu styles, but after Gaara appeared from behind, he let out a frank breath of admiration, because the battle had proven to him that it was no longer merely a display of physical power.

"Hah, only now has the battle become truly shocking; Lee convinced all of us that he had ended it, then Gaara dragged us back to reality from behind at the worst possible moment."

Jiraiya said as he shook his shoulders with obvious excitement.

As for Orochimaru, his eyes gleamed with that quiet light that appeared when he saw two opponents forcing each other to reveal a deeper layer of themselves, and he did not seem frightened by the impact so much as entertained by the idea that followed it.

"When an attack destroys the visible body but does not strike the original, the chapter ceases to be about strength and becomes about the true structure of the being you are dealing with." Orochimaru said in a soft, cold voice.

Though the reactions in Konoha differed, one thread united them all: no one doubted any longer that Lee had truly reached Gaara, but the question had now shifted from the possibility of breaking through the defense to the possibility of surviving its next surprise.

Therefore the noise quickly died down, not because the excitement had lessened, but because everyone had become too attentive to waste a single word or glance of what would come after these pages. Before long, the sound of pages being turned toward the next chapter was heard throughout the art store.

In Sunagakure, the shock was more complicated, because the scene had shaken not only the image of the battle, but the image of Gaara himself before the people of the village who had grown accustomed to seeing him as something that swallowed blows and kept standing without any explanation people could fully grasp.

When the image of the sand body collapsed in the crater and his laughter came from behind, those present felt as though they were witnessing one of the secrets of personal terror, not merely a combat maneuver.

The Third Kazekage did not raise his voice, but kept watching the chapter's pages as though they were a report on a dangerous imbalance across an entire battlefield, because what had happened revealed two things to him at once: that Gaara was breakable on the surface, and that he was more twisted than such breakage should allow.

"The boy did not lose the battle at the moment of the fall. He turned the very moment of the fall into a chance to appear in a position that left his opponent exposed from behind." The Third Kazekage said with heavy severity.

As for Rasa, his eyes remained fixed on Gaara's face emerging from the sand.

There was neither pure relief nor pure fear in his look, but that muted tension that strikes someone who knows the power still remains, yet the price of revealing it before others has begun to grow.

"His survival of the Lotus does not mean that everything is fine. It means that Lee forced him to use a deeper layer than people should have seen this quickly." Rasa said in a low, rigid voice.

He was completely shocked by Lee's ability to push Gaara into such a truly miserable state.

Little Sasori, who was studying the sandy shell with a strange concentration on the form of its fracture more than on the fact of survival, tilted his head slightly as though what he had seen had awakened in him a special curiosity about the empty shape the blow had left behind.

"I like how this thick-browed one fights." Little Sasori said in a calm tone with a faint smile.

Bakura, unlike the coldness of the council, did not hide the tension that passed through her eyes as she followed the scene's shift from Lee's possible victory to Gaara's terrifying turn from behind, because she realized that this kind of battle gave its opponent no second chance to understand.

'The most dangerous thing about Gaara is not that he endured the blow, but that he made the very moment his opponent thinks he has won the moment when his balance collapses.' Bakura thought sharply as she quickly turned the page toward the next chapter.

She was thoroughly enjoying this battle, eagerly waiting to see how it would look in the anime.

Then a brief silence spread through the place, not because anyone had failed to comment, but because the chapter had stripped everyone of their previous certainty in both directions; it was no longer possible to underestimate Lee after the Secondary Lotus, nor was it possible to feel assured that the strongest blow had truly ended Gaara.

That alone made the tension inside Suna more honest than any cheer, because the readers there understood that what they were facing was not merely an entertaining battle, but a scene that altered their view of the limits of toughness and the limits of survival together.

Far from that, in Kumogakure, the agitation was no less intense, but it took on a different character suitable for a village that measured fighters first by the clarity of their charge and the body's stability under direct violence.

The Secondary Lotus imposed its own respect upon the entire art store here from the very first moment, but the sudden survival afterward gave that same respect another shape, because power there did not impress them unless it could stand firm before an unexpected response.

The Third Raikage, A, stared at the impact crater with narrowed eyes, then looked again at the image of Gaara who had appeared behind Lee, and he needed no more than that to settle his reading of the scene according to his direct fighting logic.

"Lee's attack was excellent, but a fighter whose heart stops for a moment after the strongest blow he can deliver leaves his opponent a path back with his own hands." The Third Raikage said in a thick, steady voice.

As for his son A, who was younger and more frank in his response, excitement first appeared on his face at the impact of the Lotus, then turned into obvious tension when the sand trick was revealed, because what happened struck him with excitement and irritation at the same time.

"I hate this type of opponent; you hit him with everything you have, then discover that you struck nothing but his shell.

But that is exactly what makes defeating him worthy of respect." Young A said as he folded his arms with agitation.

And as the shock stretched across the three villages, it became clear that the chapter had not given the readers merely a turning point in the fight, but something far more tightly attached to the nerves: the illusion of resolution, and then its collapse in the very next moment.

Lee gave everyone the image of the hero who shattered a legendary defense with a single strike, and then Gaara came to tear that image apart from behind, not to erase it, but to make it more tense and more complex.

For that exact reason, no one came away from the pages with the impression that either side had fallen out of the battle. Instead, they all came away with one single feeling: that everything before this moment had merely been an approach toward the core, and that the core itself had only just begun now.
