Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 : The Shadows at Breakfast

The morning sun crept slowly through the high windows of the Duke's manor, washing the marble halls in pale gold. Yet, despite the light, there was a heaviness in the air — the kind that whispered of unspoken danger.

Seo Rin stood before her mirror, her maid fastening the last button of her lavender gown. Her reflection looked calm, but her mind swirled like a storm. The Duke's words from last night haunted her — "The same people who destroyed your family have returned to finish what they started."

Who were they?

Why now?

And what role did the Duke truly play in it all?

"Milady," the maid said softly, "the Duke requests your presence at breakfast."

Seo Rin nodded, taking one last glance at the mirror before stepping out. Her footsteps echoed softly as she walked through the corridors lined with portraits of the Min family — every ancestor watching her as if guarding their secrets.

The dining hall was vast and quiet when she entered. A long table stretched before her, but her eyes found him instantly — Duke Min Jae, seated at the far end. His crimson coat from last night was replaced with a dark charcoal one today, yet he looked no less striking.

"Good morning, Lady Seo Rin," he greeted, his tone calm — too calm.

"Good morning, Your Grace," she replied, lowering her gaze slightly before sitting at the opposite end.

For a moment, only the faint sound of silver cutlery against porcelain filled the room. Then came the sound of boots.

The butler announced, "The guests from the capital have arrived."

Seo Rin turned. Three men entered — dressed finely, but with eyes that carried arrogance. Their laughter was soft but insincere.

The Duke rose slightly to greet them. "Welcome to my manor. It's been some time."

The oldest among them, Lord Han, smiled faintly. "Indeed, Duke Min Jae. We've heard rumors — you've been keeping quite the secret company here." His gaze flicked toward Seo Rin.

Seo Rin's heart skipped a beat.

Min Jae's eyes hardened. "Mind your words, Lord Han. Lady Seo Rin is my guest."

"Guest?" another man chuckled. "Ah, I see. The daughter of the so-called traitor, isn't she? You've grown bold, Duke."

Seo Rin's fingers tightened around her spoon. Shame, anger, confusion — all rose in her chest like fire.

But before she could speak, Min Jae's voice sliced through the air — cold as ice.

"Watch your tongue."

The room fell silent. Even the servants stopped moving.

Seo Rin dared to glance up at him — his jaw was tight, his eyes sharp as steel. For a brief second, she saw something fierce there — not just anger, but protectiveness.

The men laughed it off, muttering apologies they didn't mean. Breakfast continued, but the air never cleared.

When the meal ended, Min Jae stood. "Seo Rin, may I have a word?"

Outside the hall, in the corridor lined with sunlight and silence, she finally spoke. "You shouldn't have defended me like that. It will only make things worse."

He looked at her, eyes unreadable. "Let them talk. They don't scare me."

"But they do have power," she said, her voice trembling. "And if what you said last night is true—"

He stepped closer, cutting her off softly. "Do you trust me?"

The question hung heavy in the air.

Seo Rin swallowed hard. "I… I don't know."

For a moment, his expression faltered — a hint of hurt passing through before he masked it again.

"You will," he said quietly. "Soon."

Then he turned to leave, his coat brushing past her arm — just enough to make her shiver.

But as he disappeared down the hall, Seo Rin whispered to herself, "Then prove it."

Unseen to her, one of the visiting lords watched from afar, a faint smirk curving his lips.

> "So the girl still doesn't know," he murmured. "Good. The game begins."

The light outside dimmed behind passing clouds — and the manor, once peaceful, now hid shadows that were beginning to move.
