The air in the clearing shattered with the sharp crack.
Luffy did not wait for the ancient beast to make the first move. Black lightning arced around his forearms, tearing into the heavy atmosphere as he closed the distance in a blur of motion. He crossed the ruined grass in a fraction of a second, his sandals digging into the earth, turning his forward momentum into a coiled spring.
Jaygarcia Saturn stood waiting. The towering Ushi-Oni did not flinch as the pirate captain approached. Despite a frame that eclipsed the surrounding trees, the Elder moved with liquid speed. Two chitinous spider legs whipped forward, crossing over each other to form a barricade of hardened shell and venom-laced spikes, anticipating the frontal assault.
Luffy never intended to strike the barricade.
He dropped his center of gravity mid-sprint. His lead foot planted firmly into the dirt, acting as an anchor, while his momentum carried his torso forward. He leaned backward at an impossible angle, letting the crossed spider legs slice through the air above his face. Without losing speed, Luffy pushed off his planted heel, rotating his body into an upward spinning kick.
He bypassed the barricade, driving his haki-coated foot under Saturn's chin.
The impact rang out like an artillery shell. A shockwave of black and red energy exploded outward, flattening the tall grass and sending loose dirt raining into the tree line. The force snapped Saturn's head backward, lifting his front legs off the ground.
Yet, the beast did not fall.
Dark flames flickered around Saturn's jaw. Crushed bone and torn flesh bubbled and reformed before Luffy's foot even returned to the earth. Cold eyes looked down at the pirate.
A third spider leg thrust downward like a guillotine, aiming to impale Luffy while he was still suspended.
Instead of retreating, Luffy shifted his weight onto his planted foot. He stepped into the descending strike, twisting his torso enough to let the point graze his jacket. As the limb slammed into the dirt beside him, Luffy used the beast's own leg as a stepping stone. He launched himself higher, twisting into a flurry of kicks aimed at the joints connecting Saturn's arachnid abdomen to his human torso.
Black lightning accompanied every strike. Each one forced Saturn to yield ground, his hooves tearing trenches into the soil as he was pushed backward.
But the Elder absorbed the punishment. His regeneration healed every shattered joint and bruised organ. Saturn raised a hand, his palm glowing with dark pressure. The invisible force erupted outward, catching Luffy mid-air.
The wall of force hit like a falling mountain. Luffy's breath rushed from his lungs as he was thrown from the sky, crashing through the upper canopy of an oak. Wood splintered as he tore through three tree trunks before slamming into an exposed rock face at the edge of the clearing.
Dust filled the air. Saturn slowly lowered his hand, expecting the fight to be over.
A shadow burst from the dust cloud.
Luffy sprinted back into the clearing, coughing a speck of blood from his lip, his eyes fixed on the Ushi-Oni with a grin. His movements were sharper now. The first clash had given him the rhythm. Weaving through a barrage of leg thrusts, Luffy fought less like a brawler and more like flowing water. He redirected the attacks with the backs of his wrists, slipped inside Saturn's guard, struck his blind spots, and forced the Elder to adjust his footing.
From the tree line, a metallic hum pierced the chaos.
Usopp lay flat on an elevated branch, his breathing shallow and controlled. His heart hammered against his ribs, but his hands remained steady. Through the optical scope of his weapon, the sniper tracked the fight below.
With a twist of a dial near the trigger guard, the rifle expanded. The barrel shortened and widened, while the internal chamber rotated to accommodate a different caliber.
Usopp watched Saturn raise a leg to strike Luffy from a blind angle.
"Don't you dare," Usopp whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger.
He fired.
The weapon produced a sharp magnetic crack. A high-velocity armor-piercing round crossed the clearing in a flash of blue light. It struck Saturn in the knee joint. The force did not pierce the shell, but the impact disrupted the beast's balance enough to send the strike wide.
The venomous spike plunged into the dirt beside Luffy's ear.
Taking advantage of the miss, Luffy vaulted over the embedded leg and drove a haki-infused elbow into Saturn's chest.
Saturn hissed, his eyes snapping toward the tree line. Recognizing the interference, the Elder flicked one of his rear legs. A compressed blade of air tore through the clearing, aimed at Usopp's hiding spot.
Usopp slapped a secondary trigger on the weapon's grip. The nanites surged, reshaping the heavy barrel into a metallic bow assembly. Reaching into his pouch, he nocked a glowing arrow and fired it into the path of the incoming air blade.
The arrow detonated mid-air, releasing a cloud of concussive smoke that absorbed most of the slicing wind. The remaining force shattered the branch beneath him, sending Usopp into the bushes below, coughing as he scrambled for cover.
Before Saturn could follow up, a roar shook the earth.
"Super barrier!"
Franky stepped into Saturn's line of sight. A silver substance poured from the seams of his shoulders, cascading down his forearms. The nanites solidified, forming a reinforced shield of composite metal in the dirt.
Saturn's next psychic blast slammed into the shield. The metal groaned and buckled, glowing red, but the nanites continuously reinforced the structure, distributing the force and protecting Franky's internal chassis.
"You're not looking away from our captain, you overgrown bug!" Franky yelled, his cooling fans whining over the battle.
The nanites on Franky's right arm rippled, abandoning the shield formation. The metal shifted into a multi-barreled rotary cannon. The arc reactor spun up, and Franky unleashed a barrage of blue plasma into Saturn's arachnid abdomen.
The explosions pushed the beast back, scorching the hair and cracking the chitin. Saturn roared, turning his attention toward the cyborg.
The battlefield changed. It was no longer a one-on-one duel.
Luffy bounded off a boulder, re-entering the fight with a laugh, trusting his crewmates to handle the pressure. He aimed a sweeping kick at Saturn's head, forcing the beast to raise two legs to block.
From a new position in the brush, Usopp's weapon hummed. The nanites reshaped it into a long-barreled rifle. He aimed at the dirt beneath Saturn's hooves rather than at the Elder himself. Usopp loaded a freezing round and fired.
The bullet struck the earth. Ice erupted outward, trapping three of Saturn's legs in a block of frozen ground.
Saturn strained against the ice, dark flames flaring to melt the trap, but Franky was already moving.
The cyborg dropped his weapons. The nanites on his legs shifted into propulsion thrusters. The engines ignited, sending Franky forward above the grass. His forearms reformed into hydraulic pile bunkers. He slammed both fists into the frozen earth.
The ice shattered, taking part of Saturn's chitin with it. The beast stumbled, his balance broken.
Luffy was already waiting above him.
Dropping into a martial arts stance mid-air, Luffy channeled his Conqueror's Haki into his right fist. He did not stretch. He simply delivered a downward punch between Saturn's horns.
The impact cratered the earth. A trench carved through the center of the camp, swallowing roots and turning the ground to dust.
Breathing heavily, Franky skidded to a stop near the edge of the crater, steam venting from his exhausts. Usopp emerged from behind a shattered log, rifle raised, his knees shaking from the adrenaline. Luffy landed beside them, wiping sweat from his brow as he stared into the dust cloud.
"Did we get him?" Usopp whispered.
The dust began to clear, revealing the crater.
Saturn stood at the bottom. His skull was fractured, his horns cracked, and much of his torso was caved in. The injuries would have killed any normal creature.
Then the dark fire flared.
The bone snapped back into place. Crushed flesh bubbled and reformed. The cracked horns smoothed over. Within seconds, the injuries vanished, leaving the ancient beast standing as though the attack had never happened.
Saturn looked up at the three pirates. The boredom was gone, replaced by irritation.
"Insects," Saturn stated, his voice carrying a strange echo. "You delay the inevitable."
Before Luffy could react, Saturn vanished.
He did not move fast; he simply crossed the distance in a way that defied what should have been possible. He appeared in front of the trio. The displaced air threw Usopp off his feet. Franky raised his arms, his nanites forming a shield, but he was too slow.
Saturn swung a venom-coated leg. The strike bypassed Franky and slammed into Luffy's chest.
The sound of breaking ribs echoed across the clearing. Luffy coughed blood, his eyes widening as the force lifted him from the ground. Saturn followed with a barrage of strikes, driving Luffy backward and combining physical force with psychic pressure.
Luffy raised his haki-coated arms to block, but Saturn had taken control of the rhythm. He battered down Luffy's defenses and delivered an overhead strike that drove the captain into the earth.
The ground buckled, forming a crater around Luffy.
Silence fell. Luffy did not move.
"Luffy!" Usopp screamed, scrambling to his feet. He aimed his rifle and chambered an explosive round.
Franky's eye scanned the crater for life signs. "Step away from him, you freak!" Franky roared, the nanites on his shoulders forming missile pods.
Saturn ignored them. He slowly raised a chitinous leg, preparing to drive it through Luffy.
Far across the battlefield, the other clashes continued.
Zoro slid backward across the frozen grass, his breath visible in the air. He parried a thrust from Nusjuro, dark blades sparking as Conqueror's Haki met the swordsman's freezing aura. Zoro's eye narrowed as he felt a sudden drop in the pressure coming from the center of the camp.
Nearby, Sanji ducked beneath a sweeping tusk from Warcury, blue flame igniting around his leg as he delivered a counter-kick to the boar's snout. He landed and glanced toward the dust cloud where his captain had been fighting.
Yamato laughed, swinging her club to knock away a volley of feathers from Mars. Even she paused for a moment, an ear twitching toward the sudden quiet in the center of the clearing.
Near the back of the camp, Vivi gasped for air, her legs burning with exhaustion. She rolled aside, narrowly avoiding Ju Peter as the worm tore through the earth where she had been. She gripped her steel weapon and tried to force Haki around the blade. She was outmatched, surviving through instinct and determination, but even she felt the change in the atmosphere.
At the edge of the tree line, Dorry and Brogy lowered their weapons slightly. Their instincts caught a strange vibration moving through the soil beneath their boots.
Back at the crater, Saturn's leg began to descend toward Luffy's chest.
Then it started.
Don.
A faint sound echoed from the crater. It was quiet enough to be mistaken for settling earth.
Saturn paused, his eyes narrowing.
Da-da.
Usopp froze, his finger hovering over the trigger. He tilted his head, unsure whether he was hearing a sound or feeling a vibration in his chest.
Don. Da-da.
The sound grew louder. It was not only a noise. It was a rhythmic thumping that seemed to pass through the air. It sounded like a distant drumbeat, cutting through the atmosphere the Elders had brought to the island.
Luffy's fingers twitched.
His chest rose as he drew in a breath. His eyes snapped open. The serious shadow across his face disappeared, replaced by a grin.
Don. Da-da. Don. Da-da.
The heartbeat became deafening. Loose rocks around the crater began to vibrate in time with the rhythm.
A white light washed over the fallen captain. His dark hair turned white, flowing upward. His clothes bleached to white, and a cloud of vapor formed around his shoulders.
He did not stand. He floated upward until he hovered above the broken earth.
Luffy threw his head back and laughed.
The laughter rang across the battlefield, breaking the tension and drawing the attention of everyone nearby.
Gear Five
Saturn did not wait. The beast thrust his venomous leg toward Luffy's heart.
Luffy did not dodge. He caught the spike with his bare hand.
The moment his fingers closed around it, the chitin lost its rigidity. The terrifying leg bent and flopped like a rubber hose. Saturn's eyes widened.
Still laughing, Luffy twisted. He pulled the rubberized spider leg, dragging the beast off balance.
"Ah, this is fun!" Luffy cheered, his voice carrying a strange resonance.
He spun through the air, swinging the Ushi-Oni in a circle. Saturn's remaining legs left the ground. Luffy released him, sending the beast through the tree line and leaving a trench in the earth.
Luffy dropped back down. When his sandals touched the dirt, the ground rippled beneath him.
Usopp stared, his rifle lowering. "What... what is happening right now?"
Franky pushed his sunglasses up his nose, grinning. "I don't know, bro, but I think the rules just changed!"
From the trees, an invisible force erupted. Saturn rose from the wreckage, his body healing. Without moving his limbs, he released a wave of psychic pressure toward Luffy.
The impact threw the captain backward, but instead of crashing into the dirt, he struck a nearby tree. The trunk stretched backward like a slingshot.
"Boing!" Luffy laughed as the tree launched him back toward the center of the camp.
He flew through the air, stretching his arms. His hands expanded until they were larger than the surrounding structures. He brought both fists toward Saturn.
Saturn raised his legs to block.
Luffy did not strike him. He slammed his giant hands into the dirt on either side of the Elder. The ground turned to rubber. He grabbed the earth and pulled it upward, wrapping Saturn in a cocoon of elastic dirt and rock.
"Usopp! Franky!" Luffy yelled.
They moved without needing further instructions.
Usopp's hands moved over his weapon. The nanites reshaped it into a scatter-gun. He loaded an incendiary shell and aimed at a gap in the cocoon where Saturn's horns were visible. He fired.
The shell entered the cocoon and detonated, filling the space with fire.
Franky followed. The nanites on his right arm formed a railgun. He fired a tungsten slug through the rubberized earth.
The slug struck Saturn, breaking the cocoon and sending the Elder backward through the flames.
Saturn stopped, his body smoking, his chitin cracked, and his dark flames struggling to regenerate the damage. He pulled himself upright and glared at Luffy.
"You dare make a mockery of this power?" Saturn hissed.
The heavy atmosphere returned.
Black fire erupted from Saturn's body, forming a sphere of energy above his horns. The pressure from the attack began to wither the grass around him.
Saturn intended to wipe out the central camp.
Luffy stopped bouncing. He stood on the rippling ground and tilted his head as he watched the sphere grow.
He did not raise his guard.
He simply listened.
Don.
His eyes closed, the smile remaining.
Da-da.
Usopp lowered his weapon, feeling the vibration beneath his boots. Franky's weapons went silent as his mechanical eye registered an energy signature coming from deep below the island.
Don. Da-da.
The sound traveled beyond the clearing. It passed over the fighting crew. It moved through Zoro's clashing blades, Sanji's blue flames, Yamato's swings, Vivi's desperate struggle, and the Giants standing at the perimeter.
It reached the Frontier Dome and continued downward through the layers of Egghead Island.
Deep beneath the surface, far below the laboratories and technology, lay a forgotten scrapyard.
The cavern was filled with discarded machines, rusted gears, and broken weapons.
At its center sat a giant robot against a wall of debris.
It was made of dark metal, its armor marked by age and neglect. Vines covered its chest, while dust coated its limbs. It had remained silent for two hundred years.
But the rhythm reached it.
Don. Da-da. Don. Da-da.
The sound passed through the rusted metal and echoed inside its chassis.
Deep within its chest, something stirred. A dormant energy source caught a spark. Dust fell from its shoulders.
A mechanical hum filled the cavern.
Slowly, the ancient gears began to turn. Chains snapped as internal pistons activated. A massive metal hand twitched, its fingers dragging across the stone floor.
The chamber began to tremble, dust falling from the ceiling as the machine shifted.
In the darkness of the scrapyard, two mechanical eyes ignited with golden light.
The massive head tilted upward, facing the surface where the laughing captain stood.
After eight hundred years of silence, the ancient giant had finally heard the heartbeat of the Sun.
