Chapter 2 - the first move

Alex sat in the shadowed corner of the Duke's manor, reading the System's glowing quests. The first, Establish Authority, was no small feat; he was barely acknowledged by the servants, and his older brothers controlled every resource.

He scanned the manor. The kitchen maid quivered as she passed by—she'd be scolded for talking with Alex. The steward wouldn't answer his questions. Even his own room was a cluttered attic without a lock.

But the King System's window remained:

[Hint: Win loyalty. Protect one person who needs you.]

That night, Alex heard a muffled cry. A younger servant, Tomas, was being dragged away by guards—accused of a theft he didn't commit. Alex stepped between them.

"My father, the Duke, commands truth above all else," Alex declared boldly.

The guards hesitated, unused to the silent third son showing any backbone. Alex pressed on; the King System whispered, guiding him to challenge their authority with words that felled suspicion.

Quest Completed: Establish Authority. Reward — King's Domain (Lv.1).

Suddenly, a small but unmistakable golden crest appeared on Alex's palm. The servant knelt, thanking him, eyes full of newfound loyalty.

The dawn revealed a shift in the air—Alex was no longer invisible.

The manor buzzed with rumors. Whispers drifted through gilded halls—"Did you see the Duke's third son stand up to the guards?" "Has Alex finally gone mad, or does he have something up his sleeve?"

Alex moved with new purpose, his steps measured, his gaze sharp. The golden crest on his palm thrummed with power—a warmth that gave him courage.

The King System's window reappeared:

[Quest: Form Your Circle. Recruit at least three loyal followers. Reward — Leadership Skill (Lv.1).]

During the midday meal, Alex approached Tomas, the servant he had saved. Quietly, he handed Tomas a fresh loaf of bread and whispered, "I need your trust. Can you gather two others who are willing to follow me?"

Tomas nodded, eyes shining with gratitude.

Within hours, two more appeared:

Maria, the stablehand, who dreamed of escaping poverty.

Felix, a page, clever and discreet, eager for a chance to prove himself.

Alex gathered them in the empty stables at sunset. The three knelt, and he smiled with gentle authority.

"I can't promise you riches or safety. Only a chance to change your fates. Will you stand with me?"

All three pledged loyalty.

The King System chimed:

[Quest Completed: Leadership Skill unlocked (Lv.1).]

[New Ability: Inspire — Temporarily boost morale and loyalty of allies.]

Alex felt a surge of confidence. For the first time, he was not alone.

But as they left, a shadow lingered at the stable door. His older brother, Julian, watched with calculating eyes.

"Brother…" Julian called softly. "What are you plotting?"

Alex straightened. The silent storm was no longer just within him—it was coming for the entire Duke's house.
