Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 — The Board’s Ultimatum

The following morning, the atmosphere on the top floor of Kingsley Corporation was tense enough to slice through.

Ava Collins arrived early, hoping to immerse herself in work before the storm broke, but it was already too late. The board had convened an emergency meeting — and she understood why.

From her desk, she spotted Liam Kingsley making his way to the conference room, his expression unreadable and his steps deliberate. That alone signaled everything to her — he was gearing up for a fight.

Her heart longed to follow him, to stand by his side, but she recognized this was his battle. All she could do was hope that the truth wouldn't tear them apart.

Inside the boardroom, the mood felt cold and formal.

"Mr. Kingsley," one of the senior members started, his tone laced with judgment, "we've received concerning allegations regarding your relationship with your assistant, Ms. Collins."

Liam's jaw tightened. "Those allegations are personal — and false."

The man leaned forward. "Be cautious, Liam. Regardless of their nature, the board cannot overlook any appearance of impropriety. The company's reputation must remain intact."

Liam met their gazes head-on. "I've dedicated ten years of my life to this company. My personal life has no bearing on my performance — or its success."

Another board member cleared her throat. "Nonetheless, we must insist on one of two outcomes: either Ms. Collins is reassigned immediately or disciplinary action will be considered."

For a moment, silence enveloped the room.

Liam's hands clenched at his sides. "She's done nothing wrong. Reassigning her would be punishing her for something that doesn't exist."

"Then perhaps," the woman responded coolly, "you should consider what matters more — your company or your… personal attachments."

Her words struck deep.

Later that day, Liam found Ava in her office, staring blankly at her computer screen. When she finally looked up, one glance at his face revealed everything.

"They want to separate us," she whispered.

He nodded grimly. "Or worse."

Ava's throat tightened at his words. "Then maybe I should go."

His eyes darkened with resolve. "No. You're not leaving because of them."

"Liam—"

He stepped closer, his voice low yet fierce. "Ava, I've fought for everything I've ever had. I won't lose you too."

Her heart fluttered at the weight of his promise — even as fear crept in that love might not be enough to shield them from what lay ahead.
