Chapter 299 - Xiao Yan's Desire for a Strange Flame

Time moved the way it does when days are full — quietly, and then all at once it was gone.

A month and a half had passed.

Deep in the Tagore Desert, outside the Snake-People's Holy City.

The sand stretched in every direction without interruption, bleached pale by a sun that had been working at this landscape for longer than anyone currently alive could account for. The heat shimmered above the dunes in visible waves, bending the air into something almost liquid.

In the middle of it, five beasts burned.

They had arranged themselves in a perfect pentagon around a central point — a purple fire wolf, a blue fire leopard, a pink fire lion, a dark blue fire tiger, and a milky white fire dragon — each at one point of the formation, each radiating its particular flame with the focused intensity of something that had been called into being for a specific purpose and understood that purpose completely. They paced within their positions, occasionally releasing low rumbles that moved through the desert air less as sound and more as pressure.

Above the formation, between them and the blazing sky, a young man floated.

Black wings spread at his back, the feathers catching the desert light with a particular darkness that was somehow both absolute and alive. Golden flames moved across his body in slow, coherent patterns — not burning him, simply occupying the same space, as though the fire and the person had negotiated a comfortable arrangement some time ago.

His hands were moving through a sequence of hand seals — five of them, each different, each corresponding to one of the beasts below, his fingers forming shapes with the speed and precision of something that had been practiced past the point where individual movements required individual thought.

"Five Wheels of Fire Technique—" His voice was quiet, directed inward as much as outward. "—Combine."

The five beasts responded.

They raised their heads simultaneously and roared to the sky — five different sounds, five different registers, all at once — and then their flames moved. Not outward. Toward each other. Each stream reaching across the formation's interior, finding the others, interweaving with the geometrical inevitability of five things that had always been meant to meet at a single point.

The array formed. The center blazed.

A white light erupted from the convergence point — not the gradual brightening of something building up, but the immediate, absolute brilliance of something that had arrived. The space at the center of the formation became visible as space — warped, bent, the geometry of the desert distorting around the point of convergence as though the heat and the light and the concentrated intention of five different flames was too much mass for the local physics to accommodate without comment.

When the light dissipated, the central sand dune was gone.

Not displaced. Not scorched. Gone. Where it had been, a pit of indeterminate depth opened in the desert floor, the sand at its edges fused into irregular glass by temperatures it had no prior experience with. At the center of the pit, the air continued to distort — space still catching up to what had just happened in it — before gradually, reluctantly, resolving back into something that behaved like air again.

Above, the clouds that had been present in the nearby sky had dissolved entirely, unable to maintain their structure against the heat the technique had thrown upward. Sunlight poured through the cleared sky, direct and unfiltered, falling across the young man's face.

Xiao Se.

"Four different strange flames and one beast fire, converged through the Five Wheels technique—" He spoke quietly, to himself, to Long Kui, to the desert in general, the words carrying the particular tone of someone reviewing something they've just finished and are pleased with. "The combined output is comparable to a Heaven-rank technique. And that's without the Fire Lotus configuration." A small, thoughtful click of his tongue. "What the Fire Lotus would produce from all five simultaneously is—"

He heard Medusa approaching before she arrived, her footsteps precise and even across the air the way a Dou Zong's footsteps were. She materialized beside him, her gaze going immediately to the pit below, and she was quiet for a moment that carried genuine weight.

"Even I would take serious damage from that," she said finally, "if I wasn't ready for it." She looked at him sideways. "A Heaven-rank technique deserves its name."

"The Fire Lotus configuration would be stronger still." Xiao Se's eyes were already going through the arithmetic. In the original story, Xiao Yan's Three-Colored Fire Lotus had badly hurt the Seven-Star Dou Zong Earth Demon Old Ghost, drawing out Canaan Academy's twin guardian elders, Qian Bai and Er Lao, who finished the job. That had been three flames. Xiao Se currently had four strange flames and a beast fire — five points of convergence in the lotus formation instead of three.

The math was not modest.

"Enough to kill the Earth Demon Old Ghost outright," Medusa said, following his thought with the ease of someone who has had enough conversations with him to know which direction his reasoning runs. "And a peak Dou Zong expert would survive it, but they wouldn't enjoy it. If you added your secret technique on top—" Her voice carried a faint, specific warmth. "Below Dou Zun, you'd be functionally untouchable."

"You little vixen." Xiao Se's expression shifted into something considerably more fond. He pulled her into his arms without preliminary and pressed a light pinch to the tip of her nose. "Every word perfectly placed."

"Aren't you going to keep training?" Her pretty face had colored — she knew, with the domestic instinct of a woman who has been paying attention, exactly what let's go back meant when he said it in that tone.

"I've mastered the Five Wheels technique," Xiao Se said, flapping his wings once. They rose together, already moving toward the Medusa Temple in the distance. "And my cultivation reached the Dou Huang peak half a month ago. Breaking through to Dou Zong won't happen on a schedule I can force — I need to let things consolidate before pushing further."

He had been careful about the timing. The Royal Extreme Pill had only gone in after he'd first broken through to Eight-Star Dou Huang on his own — taking it any earlier, before his foundation could support the additional two stars, would have been the kind of careless waste that couldn't be undone. Now that he was at the peak, the next threshold required patience rather than effort. That was its own kind of discipline.

He carried her the rest of the way, and the desert fell behind them.

Later, inside the Medusa Temple—

Medusa lay against Xiao Se's chest with the boneless quality of someone who has surrendered to a comfortable position and has no intention of reconsidering it, her expression a precise blend of reproach and satisfaction that managed to communicate both without resolving into either.

She tilted her head back and fixed him with a look. "You rascal." Her voice had the texture of someone issuing a verdict that she is not especially displeased about. "Are you ever satisfied?"

"It's because you're so charming," Xiao Se said, pressing a light kiss to her forehead, perfectly sincere. His gaze drifted downward — to her stomach, still flat, still showing no sign of what more than three months of pregnancy should theoretically be producing. The Snake-People's gestation cycle was three to five years. He had known this intellectually before. It was still, in practical terms, remarkable.

"Flatterer," Medusa said, with a sound through her nose that did not successfully conceal the smile underneath it. No woman dislikes hearing that she is charming from a man she actually likes. Medusa was no exception to this, even if she would not have said so directly.

Nine-Star Dou Huang. The peak.

He took stock of it for a moment — the numbers, the gaps, the distances remaining. Dou Zong was the next threshold, and he had meant what he said: it wasn't a question of trying harder. The foundation needed time to settle before the next push could be meaningful.

There was work to do in other directions in the interim.

At the entrance to Stone Desert City.

"Xiao Yan — hold on."

Xiao Yan stopped mid-step, one foot already across the threshold of the city gate. He lowered his voice. "Teacher? What is it?"

"I thought I sensed the aura of a strange flame just now." Yao Lao's voice in his mind was focused, slightly puzzled, the tone of someone running a check on their own senses. "And possibly — more than one. That's strange. Multiple strange flames in the same general location at the same time."

"Multiple—" Xiao Yan's eyes went bright with an immediacy that would have been visible from a distance. "Teacher, let's go, quickly—"

He had already turned back toward the desert before the sentence was complete.

In the time since leaving the Monster Mountain Range, he had watched Yao Lao operate at levels that had thoroughly revised his understanding of what power meant. Strange flames devoured and refined into cultivation — the concept had gone from theoretical ambition to urgent personal priority. Every additional strange flame shortened the path.

"Go if you're not afraid to die," Yao Lao said, with the flat emphasis of someone who has watched this particular brand of recklessness develop over time and is not endorsing it.

"But you're here, Teacher," Xiao Yan pointed out, with the reasonable confidence of someone who has been relying on this logic successfully for a while.

"This is not the Monster Mountain Range." Yao Lao's voice had the weight of a deliberate shift in policy. "There were high-level monsters there that required my intervention. Here, the dangers are different, and if I continue protecting you from everything, you will never actually become strong. Consider this formal notice—" A brief pause, making sure the words landed properly. "From this point forward, unless you are genuinely about to die, I will not intervene."

Xiao Yan was quiet for a moment. The desert stretched ahead of him, bleached and enormous and indifferent.

Then: "Understood, Teacher." His voice had settled into something firmer, the adolescent bravado dropping away into something more real. "What should I do first?"

"First — fresh water. Adequate supplies. Several accurate maps of the Tagore Desert, purchased from someone who knows it." Yao Lao's tone had shifted with Xiao Yan's — less warning, more instruction. "The Tagore Desert has denser fire-attribute energy than the Monster Mountain Range. It's actually better suited for your cultivation than my original plan. We'll begin the real training once you've prepared properly."

A pause.

"And bring the Xuan Heavy Ruler."

Xiao Yan nodded once, adjusted the weight across his back as the Xuan Heavy Ruler settled into place with its familiar, grounding pressure, and turned to enter Stone Desert City to resupply.

The strange flame — or flames — could wait a little longer. He would find them prepared, or not at all.
