The roar of Gatling guns continued across the battlefield, mixing with the endless gunfire and explosions shaking the western side. From the rooftop, Jaxon settled into position and looked through his scope, calmly searching for targets among the chaos.
"Fall back! Regroup behind the barricades!"
Soldiers scrambled to reorganize their positions as Crawlers moved among them. The creatures were too fast to properly track at such close range. They constantly leaped between walls, rooftops, and defensive positions, attacking from one direction before disappearing into another.
Worse, they seemed to understand the danger of the soldiers' weapons. Instead of staying out in the open, the Crawlers deliberately moved close to groups of soldiers, using the chaos around them as cover. Every time someone tried to aim, there was a chance another soldier would cross into their line of fire.
"Movement above!"
"Crawler behind you!"
