Chapter 1.6 – Raising the Curtain
Elowen Pavel
I could feel every gaze fixed upon me.
Each pair of eyes was like a spotlight, exposing every detail... every flaw.
My powered wheelchair rolled slowly toward the center of the stage, its quiet electric hum accompanying every movement.
It was a sound I had learned to ignore over the years.
Yet today it seemed louder than ever.
A constant reminder of the life I had always known...
Or perhaps...
The first announcement that freedom was finally within reach.
I had endured countless stares throughout my life.
Looks filled with pity.
With indifference.
Or with unhealthy curiosity.
But today's were different.
They weren't looking at Elowen, the patient.
They were looking at a symbol.
A promise of healing.
Perhaps...
Even a miracle.
When Jeremy rested his hand upon my shoulder, it probably seemed like an ordinary gesture to everyone else.
To me...
It meant everything.
His fingers were trembling ever so slightly.
And, for a fleeting moment...
I felt my own courage begin to falter.
If I gave in...
Even for a single second...
Everything might fall apart.
"Elowen is far more than a clinical case," Jeremy said, his voice rough with emotions he was desperately trying to suppress.
"She is a symbol."
"A symbol of courage..."
"And of faith in what the future can become."
His words lingered in the air like the last notes of a fragile melody.
I swallowed with difficulty.
If only he knew...
How fragile that courage truly was.
As thin as a thread stretched across the edge of an endless abyss.
And yet...
Deep inside me...
A tiny spark refused to die.
A quiet voice whispered...
Keep going.
Fight.
When Vivian opened the case, my eyes were immediately drawn to the two vials.
The liquids inside seemed almost alive.
They swirled gently behind the glass like living clouds caught in an endless dance.
I remembered the countless nights Jeremy and I had spent refining them together.
Now...
They were only inches away from me.
Doubt crashed into me without warning.
Had I made the right choice?
Fear.
Hope.
Uncertainty.
They collided inside me, merging into a storm I could no longer silence.
Stop doubting yourself, Elowen.
If you truly want to live...
Then you have to keep moving forward.
Jeremy stepped toward me, holding out the blue vial.
Our eyes met.
I saw the beads of sweat gathering on his forehead.
His hands were shaking.
He looked just as frozen as I felt.
Unable to move.
I could hear the uneven rhythm of his breathing.
Barely above a whisper, I looked into his eyes and said,
"Do it."
He carefully raised the vial to my lips.
The liquid slid gently down my throat.
An intense coolness spread through my body like an icy wave washing over every part of me.
A shiver ran through me.
"...That's strange."
"It feels so cold."
The words escaped almost without my realizing it.
Then came the syringe.
When Jeremy knelt before me, he reminded me of a priest about to perform a sacred rite.
His voice was so quiet that only I could hear it.
"You can still stop this."
"You don't have to go through with it."
I drew a slow, trembling breath.
Part of me wanted to run.
To disappear.
To wake up from this nightmare.
But another part...
A far stronger part...
Refused to retreat.
I wanted to break these chains.
No matter the cost.
"Stop underestimating me, Jeremy," I said, my voice unwavering.
"I want this."
"Not for you."
"Not for them."
"For me."
"Because I want to live."
He swallowed hard.
The uncertainty in his eyes was impossible to miss.
"Look at me."
Slowly...
Almost ceremonially...
He guided the needle into my arm.
The moment it pierced my skin, a sharp pain shot through me.
Then came the fire.
A searing heat flooded my veins, spreading through every fiber of my body.
My heart exploded into motion.
Each beat thundered inside my ears like a war drum.
Every muscle.
Every nerve.
Every bone.
It felt as though they were burning...
Breaking apart...
And rebuilding themselves all at once.
I clenched my jaw until my teeth ached beneath the pressure.
My eyes closed despite every effort to keep them open.
Hot tears streamed down my cheeks.
I won't scream.
Not here.
Not in front of them.
Voices echoed somewhere far away, swallowed by the deafening roar inside my head.
"Blood pressure is dropping!"
"Heart rate accelerating!" another voice called.
I clenched my jaw even harder.
My vision blurred.
Shadowy figures seemed to gather around me.
Then...
Amid the chaos...
A softer voice reached me.
Its words were barely audible.
"Fight, Elowen..."
I could only just make them out as the relentless ringing continued to fill my ears.
Every muscle.
Every nerve.
Every fiber of my body felt as though it were burning, tearing apart, and rebuilding itself all at once.
The pain became unbearable.
Yet I refused to scream.
Not here.
Not before all of them.
Somewhere in the distance...
Another voice echoed through the endless ringing.
"Blood pressure is dropping!"
"Heart rate accelerating!" another voice called.
I clenched my jaw so hard I thought my teeth might crack.
My vision dissolved into a blur.
Shadowy figures seemed to gather around me.
Then...
From somewhere within the chaos...
A gentle voice reached me.
Its words were almost impossible to understand.
"Fight, Elowen..."
I barely heard the whisper through the relentless ringing filling my ears.
I felt myself slipping from my wheelchair.
Yet I never felt the cold floor I should have struck.
Instead...
A familiar warmth wrapped itself around me.
Like invisible arms pulling me close.
Instinctively, I reached out, desperate to hold on to it.
The ringing in my ears grew distant.
Then something far worse rose from deep within me.
A pain unlike anything I had ever imagined.
It erupted from the very core of my body.
A raw, involuntary cry tore itself from my throat, echoing throughout the room.
"It's going to be alright."
"Don't be afraid."
"Remember why you're doing this."
The voice remained beside me.
Soft.
Steady.
A lifeline in the darkness.
I clung to it like an anchor, fighting with everything I had to keep myself from slipping away.
As more and more liquid spilled from my mouth, I clung desperately to the warmth surrounding me.
Then...
For the very first time...
I understood what it truly meant...
To move my fingers.
To tighten my grip around something.
To feel my own body answer me.
That first connection with a body that had always felt like a stranger lasted only an instant before another wave of agony crashed through me.
My throat burned as though it were being consumed from the inside.
"You have to hold on."
"Think about yourself."
"Think about what you truly want."
The voice remained calm.
Steady.
I want to see this world.
I want to do ordinary, meaningless things with my own hands.
I don't want to survive.
I want to live.
A deep, broken sound escaped my throat.
As I lifted my head, the harsh white lights above me blinded me.
I felt trapped in a trance beyond description.
One part of me was discovering my body for the very first time.
One sensation after another.
One muscle after another.
One heartbeat after another.
The other part felt as though I were being torn apart.
Pulled in opposite directions.
Broken.
As if something inside me were being ripped away forever.
"Why are you doing this?"
The voice sounded almost pleading now.
I tried to answer.
Only ragged gasps escaped my lips.
"Why?"
"Answer me."
Gathering the last of my strength, I forced the words through my trembling lips.
"I..."
"...want..."
"...to live."
Such simple words.
Yet as they left my mouth, they vibrated through my throat in a way I had never experienced before.
It was a new sensation.
Strangely comforting.
The world around me slowly began to come back into focus.
"Why?"
The voice asked again.
I felt myself drifting backward, as though someone were gently laying me down upon a cloud.
"I want..."
"...to see..."
"...the world."
Tears rolled freely down my cheeks.
"I don't want to be a burden to my family anymore."
Little by little, the pain began to loosen its grip.
The blurry silhouette leaning over me slowly came into focus.
Jeremy.
He was holding me firmly, and I instinctively clung to him.
My trembling fingers searched desperately for something real to hold on to.
"I want to go for walks..."
"I want to explore."
"I want to eat the food I love."
My own voice sounded clearer now.
Even I was surprised by it.
A genuine smile spread across Jeremy's face.
Relief.
Pride.
Both shone plainly in his eyes.
Slowly, I released my grip and raised my hands toward his face.
Every movement hurt.
Every muscle trembled.
But I kept going.
For the first time...
I could truly feel another human being.
The warmth of his skin.
The roughness of his beard.
The gentle warmth of his breath.
The softness of his hair beneath my fingertips.
"I want to hold my parents in my arms."
Hope filled every word.
With infinite care, Jeremy helped me to my feet.
For the first time in my life...
My feet touched the ground.
I felt its coolness.
I could move every single toe.
Even with Jeremy supporting me...
I was standing.
On my own.
Across from me, my parents were crying.
My father stood frozen, one hand covering his mouth as he struggled to hold back his sobs.
My mother reached toward me with trembling fingers, as though she feared that even the slightest touch might shatter the fragile miracle unfolding before her.
My parents instinctively started toward me.
Jeremy gently raised a hand, stopping them.
There were eight steps between us.
Eight steps to reach them.
Eight steps before I could finally hold them in my arms.
Jeremy helped me forward.
One step.
Then another.
I was walking.
When I was four steps away, I realized I could no longer feel his support.
My legs...
Fragile.
Unsteady.
But alive.
They were carrying me on their own.
"She's doing it..."
My father whispered, his voice breaking.
Without warning, exhaustion swept over me.
My knees gave way.
This time...
I fell into their arms.
"Mom..."
"Dad..."
"I love you."
My words dissolved into tears as ours mingled together.
My mother gently brushed my hair back.
Her trembling hands lingered against my face.
"We love you so much, sweetheart," she whispered.
My father said nothing.
He simply held me tighter.
As though he feared I might disappear if he ever let go.
Wrapped in their embrace...
I finally understood what it truly meant to live.
Not merely to exist...
But to live.
Free from the chains that had bound me for so many years.
And for the first time in a very long time...
I allowed myself to imagine a future.
