Chapter 9 - Training

Out in the open an older man and a small teenage boy were fighting.

The man stood on one space and he held his left arm behind his back, dodging and deflecting the boy's strikes.

It had been one and a half month since the boy was under the man's tutelage.

His new teacher showed him how to fight and now began to show how the boy should use his senses more, to perceive more than just with his eyes.

He wasn't really good at it, he was just starting his training and still made many mistakes.

His training now included that his teacher makes noises varying in origin and volume; For example, if he snapped with his hand that is behind his back that would mean that he needed to immediately throw two jabs with his left hand before he could do anything else.

When he failed he would get punched and Hawk always was able to hit him and it hurt, but he wasn't able to dodge them.

Right now Hawk let out a small noise out of his mouth, indicating that Cane needed to swing a right hook, but the boy didn't hear the noise and got flipped over, landing on the ground.

"That's it for today, rest and review your performance," the man let out, coughing at the end.

Luckily the man didn't leave any noticeable bruises on Cane's body, so the man didn't saw his regeneration.

Similarly to Cane, Hawk also had his secret.

The boy was currently living with the man in the outermost part where most people couldn't live, but the man lived better than every other person in the outer district.

He had many rooms, giving the boy his own room with a door, which you could lock.

Food was also not a problem, the man gave the boy a thick drink, calling it a substitute for meat, but the boy didn't know what it substituted.

The boy just felt more energised after every meal.

Before the boy could think more about Hawk, said man interrupted him.

"We need to gather more resources tomorrow night we will go out and wait for the governments supply to arrive," the man was shouting to the boy who was still lying on the ground.

Standing up the boy walked towards the man who was cleaning his knife. Glancing at the knife made out of a black metal, the boy asked.

"When do I get one?"

"Get what? A knife, what do you need a knife for?" Hawk asked raising his eyebrow.

"To protect myself?"

"To protect yourself, from what and how. Knifes are nice utility tools, but I assume you mean as a weapon. Don't forget that the use of every weapon is to kill. I don't want to say that killing is never an option, but are you prepared to kill?"

Cane didn't know what he would answer. He imagined taking revenge especially on Dorian and his goons, but he didn't know if he could kill them.

So he remained silent.

---

It was the next day, today the boy didn't receive any training. Hawk explained their plan.

It was relatively simple, they both waited until the truck with the supply arrived.

Upon the trucks arrival, both boy followed it until it dropped this week's rations.

The truck will leave several supplies through their route.

For now they would focus on one supply, both of them, but his teacher told him that Cane will do the next alone.

When nighttime arrived, the duo equipped their back packs, the man had one with several compartments. The both made their way to the area where Cane lived

The walk took several hours of time, therefore the time was used to train Cane, specifically his senses.

The first half of the walk consisted of training Canes peripheral vision, because focusing too much on one thing could lead to getting surprised and in worst case it could lead to death.

Cane was only allowed to look straight. To make it easier for himself, Cane looked at the farthest building and tried to keep staring there.

After some time Hawk said that he shouldn't do that because he concentrates too much on the building.

If he ever looked to the side or if he couldn't answer correctly, he heard how Hawk note something on a piece of paper.

After asking the older man what he wrote down, the man answered in an ominous tone that he would soon find out.

The next training session was there to train his ears or more accurately his sense to locate things with closed eyes.

The man gave Cane a blindfold, and told him to use his stick, which his student carried around, to walk. While they walked the man threw stones around.

The boys task was first to say if the stone landed in the front, back, left or right. He first needed some time to locate them.

After some time the training was relatively easy, so the intensity increased. Now he needed to talk about times and the boy didn't understand why he needed to talk about time.

When something landed in front of him it was twelve o'clock, right was three o'clock, behind him was six o'clock and left to him was nine o'clock, the remaining numbers were in between.

This time the game, how it felt beforehand, was really hard.

This time he almost had it always wrong or he assumed it, because Hawk was writing something almost the whole time.

While the training happened the boy heard a weird sound, but he decided to ignore it.

The new method was only lasting for half an hour to a minute, before he was allowed to take his blindfold off.

Taking the blindfold off, Cane needed to adjust his vision. After blinking for some time, he saw that they were near his home.

Asking his mentor what they are doing now. Hawk punched the boys arm because he should already know what they would do.

"We wait of course or do you see a truck driving. Come on let's go on a roof and wait."
