Chapter 135 - Chapter 135

May Parker hummed a happy tune, packing her small backpack. Her favorite plush toy, a well-loved Charmander, was tucked securely inside. Next to it, a gleaming Poké Ball rested, a promise of adventure. She thought about Aurawood, the new preserve where wild Pokémon roamed free. It would be amazing.

Mary Jane watched from the doorway, a soft smile on her face. Her heart swelled with fondness, but a tiny knot of worry tightened in her stomach. My little girl, off on her own adventure. She knew May was capable, smart, and brave. Still, a mother always worried.

A weary sigh pulled MJ's attention. Peter Parker leaned against the doorframe, rubbing his eyes. The faint smell of ozone and something vaguely… villain-ish clung to him. He'd clearly been up all night.

"Ready for your big Pokémon safari, Mayday?" Peter asked, his voice raspy but warm. He tried for a playful tone.

May zipped up her backpack, bouncing on the balls of her feet.

"Yep! I'm gonna find the coolest Pokémon ever!" she declared.

Peter ruffled her hair.

"I wish I could come with you, kiddo," he said, a genuine regret in his voice. "But duty calls. The city needs its friendly neighborhood… well, you know."

May's shoulders drooped for a split second. A tiny pang of disappointment, quickly masked. She knew. She always knew. Her dad had important work, saving people. Even if it meant he couldn't always be there for the fun stuff. It was why she needed to be responsible too. To be a good partner to her own Pokémon.

"It's okay, Dad," May said, forcing a bright smile. "I'll tell you all about it when I get back."

Peter managed a tired grin, then leaned over to kiss MJ.

"Keep an eye on her, tiger," he murmured.

MJ returned the kiss, her eyes conveying a silent message of understanding.

"Always, Tiger," she replied. "Now go get some sleep. You look like you wrestled a particularly grumpy Rhino."

The air outside Aurawood Preserve buzzed with the chatter of excited visitors. May clutched her Charmander plushie tightly, her eyes wide as she took in the towering stone archway marking the entrance. Lush, green mountains stretched behind it, hinting at untold wonders within.

MJ smiled, her hand resting gently on May's shoulder. This is going to be good for her. A chance to just be a kid, explore, and maybe make a new friend.

A stern-faced Aurawood Ranger stood guard, a watchful Growlithe at his side. The Growlithe, a sturdy, orange-and-black canine Pokémon, eyed each newcomer with quiet vigilance. The Ranger, in his crisp green uniform, projected an air of calm authority. He was the first line of defense, a guardian of the delicate balance between human and Pokémon.

"Welcome to the Aurawood Preserve," the Ranger greeted, his voice firm but polite. He held out a hand for their identification.

MJ presented their IDs. The Ranger scanned them, his gaze then falling on May's Poke Ball, visible in her open backpack. He gave a small, approving nod.

"Do you have a Pokémon partner, young lady?" he asked.

May beamed, pulling out her Poké Ball.

"Not yet! But I'm going to find one today!" she declared, her excitement bubbling over.

The Ranger's expression softened slightly. He handed MJ a laminated map and a slim booklet.

"Please read these carefully," he instructed. "The preserve is a place of harmony, but also wildness. Respect the Pokémon and their habitats. Do not disturb them unnecessarily. And always, always follow the marked trails."

May snatched the map, her finger already tracing paths through the green landscape. So many places to explore! So many Pokémon to meet!

The Aurawood Rangers were more than just park guards. They were peacekeepers, trained to understand the nuanced behaviors of Pokémon and to de-escalate potential conflicts. Their presence ensured that humans and Pokémon could coexist safely within the preserve. Each Ranger worked closely with their Growlithe partner, a testament to the bond that could form between species. They were educators, first responders, and protectors, all rolled into one. Their job was to guide, but also to enforce, making sure that the spirit of Aurawood — a sanctuary for all life — was maintained.

"We will," MJ promised, giving May a gentle squeeze. "Thank you, Mr. Ranger."

"Have a wonderful time," the Ranger said, stepping aside. "And good luck finding your partner."

May practically dragged MJ through the archway, her eyes scanning the horizon. The air smelled fresh, like pine and damp earth. Distant chirps and rustles filled the air. This was it. Her adventure had finally begun.

May, with her Poké Ball held tight, stepped through the archway. MJ followed close behind, a comforting presence. The change was immediate. The scent of pine and damp earth filled May's nose, replacing the city's exhaust. Distant chirps and rustles tickled her ears. It was a symphony of nature, so different from the constant hum of New York.

Her eyes widened, drinking in the vibrant greens of towering trees and the kaleidoscope of wildflowers. Sunlight dappled through the leaves, creating shifting patterns on the forest floor. It feels like stepping into a picture book, May thought, her heart doing a happy little flutter.

She pulled gently on MJ's hand, eager to explore.

"Mom, look!" she whispered, pointing to a patch of glowing moss on a fallen log. "It's so pretty!"

MJ smiled, squeezing her daughter's hand.

"It certainly is, sweetie," she said. "Just remember what the Ranger said. Be respectful."

May nodded, her gaze already sweeping through the undergrowth. Every rustle of leaves, every flash of color, held the promise of a new friend. She spotted a Pidgey taking flight, its wings beating softly against the clean air. Maybe that one? No, too fast. She wanted a Pokémon that felt right. A partner.
