Chapter 4 - 4 - Dark Ascension

Emperor Dai Zhong engaged in his rigorous Jian ShiJi Jian swordplay amidst the towering pine trees. Here, amid the tranquil beauty of nature, he sought to refine his skills in a setting far removed from the structured confines of the traditional Dai Fencing Hall.

Clothed in a new ensemble of white clothing, green and black tunic and boots befitting the outdoor setting, he traversed the forest canopy, leaping effortlessly from one tree to another. Balanced perfectly in mid-air, he wielded his blue energy plasma saber with grace and finesse, the blade slicing through the air with a fluidity that spoke of his mastery.

Despite the solitude of his training, he was never truly alone. Eunuchs Lin, Lu, Pang, and twelve Dai bodyguards stood vigilant, their presence ensuring the emperor's safety even amidst the tranquillity of the forest. Their unwavering loyalty provided Dai Zhong with the peace of mind to focus solely on his practice.

Amidst the humming sounds of his energy blade, his practice was suddenly shattered by the urgent summons of Eunuch Gong.

"Your Majesty, sorry to interrupt." He apologized before getting to the point. "But the Grand Chancellor likes to see you right now."

"Bring him in." He replied firmly.

"Yes, your Majesty." Eunuch Gong complied.

Reluctantly, he halted his training, a sense of duty compelling him to heed the call of his trusted advisor. As Grand Chancellor was ushered in, he paused to cleanse his hands with basin water offered by the other Eunuch Lu, a symbolic gesture of transition from the physical exertion of training to the weighty discussions of governance.

With a resigned sigh, Dai Zhong prepared himself for the pressing matters that awaited, his mind shifting seamlessly from the serenity of the forest to the complexities of state affairs.

"Greetings, your Majesty." Upon seeing him, Premier Hu immediately bowed and knelt, a gesture of respect befitting his position.

"No need to stand on ceremony. You may rise." The Majesty quickly dispelled the formality, urging his trusted advisor to rise.

With a nod of appreciation, Premier Hu straightened himself and approached the emperor, ready to convey the urgency of his visit.

"Grand Chancellor, what urgent matters do you need to see me this time?" The Majesty inquired.

"Your Majesty, Advisor Mo Ru Yi has returned from Shibeibu Empire." Premier Hu conveyed in grave tone from the weight of the news he bore.

As the Majesty understood his expression and silently signalled for privacy by dismissing his attendants, Premier Hu proceeded to deliver the outcome of Ru Yi's negotiations.

"Oh, really?" The Majesty asked again. "What is the outcome?"

"I'm afraid your older brother is unable to return despite Ru Yi's best efforts in negotiating. For it was tempered by King Monarch Zengis's new condition. Which is for you to marry his eldest daughter Princess Demeika and appoint her as new Empress Dowager of Dai Dynasty."

The Majesty's initial surprise was tempered by these unexpected developments. Yet despite the gravity of the situation, his countenance softened into a smile, a sign that he was willing to entertain the proposed alliance through marriage.

"In that case, I want you to summon Mo Ru Yi first thing tomorrow morning into the Imperial Courts Chamber," He instructed firmly and decisively.

"It will be done, your Majesty." With a respectful acknowledgment, Premier Hu affirmed his compliance before taking his leave, leaving the emperor to contemplate the implications of new developments in solitude.

As the morning sun cast its golden light upon the Imperial Court, Emperor Dai Zhong presided from his majestic throne, a symbol of authority and power.

Flanked by his loyal Eunuchs Lin and Lu, along with four handmaidens, he exuded an aura of regal dignity. The rest of the imperial Royal Circle, led by the esteemed Grand Chancellor Premier Hu, knelt before him in respectful reverence. Advisors Mo Ru Yi and Chen Xi, along with other court officials and imperial army generals and commanders, formed a solemn assembly, awaiting the emperor's decrees.

With a commanding presence, Dai Zhong addressed his court, his voice resonating with authority as he laid out the agenda for the session. The air was filled with anticipation as the gathered dignitaries paid attention to his announcement, each prepared to fulfil their duties to the utmost of their abilities. Eunuchs Lin and Lu stood stoically by his side, their unwavering loyalty a testament to the emperor's rule.

"Greetings and may you live with longevity, your Majesty!" All of them echoed at the same time while on their knees.

"You may all rise." He dispensed with their formalities and obligated them to stand on their feet.

"Thank you, your Majesty." They obeyed and got up before moving to either flank of the chamber.

"As usual, those with issues may bring them up now and those who don't may be dismissed immediately." He said.

At this moment, Imperial Magistrate and Advisor Mo Ru Yi stepped up and knelt again before the Majesty before conveying the news.

"Your Majesty, as you instructed, I met up and signed the peace treaty with Shibeibu King Monarch Zengis. Here are the treaty details." After saying those words, he produced the dark scroll from his green robes. "For you to read, your Majesty."

Feeling delighted, Dai Zhong got off his throne and stepped down before approaching him.

"Imperial Magistrate and Advisor Mo Ru Yi, you are finally back!" He greeted and said with a smile. Taking and passing the dark scroll to accompanying Eunuch Lu, he beckoned Ru Yi to get up while saying: "After a long hard journey, you must be getting tired. You may get up immediately."

"Thank you, your Majesty for your concern." Ru Yi complied.

"Advisor Mo, I and the Grand Chancellor have entrusted you with securing the release and bringing back my older brother Dai Chong. Where is he now?" He inquired.

Looking down and shaking his head sadly, Ru Yu replied: "I am sorry, your Majesty. I am afraid he cannot come back."

Upon hearing those bad news, Dai Zhong turned from being happy to be shocked as he asked in bellowing tone: "What?"

Getting down to his knees again and bowing his head, Ru Yi continued: "While on the way here, we were ambushed by Shibeibu soldiers. He was killed despite our men doing everything they can to protect him."

Hearing those words, Dai Zhong became angered and depressed. He stood back and the rest of the Imperial Circle also stepped up and got down on their knees in mourning before him.

"My brother, how can you depart just like that?" He asked himself. "Throughout these years as Emperor, I have been waiting for you to return and reclaim my throne as worthy successor according to my father's decree and will. Now that you are gone, how can you expect me to carry on living and governing?"

While the Majesty mourned his older brother, Ru Yu looked to his superior Grand Chancellor who turned back and nodded with consent while they were on their knees.

"Without you by my side, who else can I trust and depend upon?" Dai Zhong continued muttering to himself in despair.

"Your Majesty, I am very sorry about your brother's passing." Premier Hu comforted him.

Unfortunately, his words angered Dai Zhong further and without warning, he suddenly withdrew his beam saber handle from his belt.

Before approaching,

right into Ru Yi's heart.

With blood gushing from his mouth and chest, Ru Yu was unable to speak properly. But Dai Zhong refused to bat an eyelid. Instead, out of anger and fury, he continued thrusting and twisting his beam saber until the entire blade entered and out of Ru Yi's chest.

When the former and late Imperial Magistrate and Advisor's body collapsed in a heap, he instantly extracted and deactivated the energy blade before attaching back to his belt.

"Please spare us, your Majesty!" On witnessing his act, everyone pleaded with him for his mercy.

Still looking agitated and distressed, Dai Zhong said: "His death is a tragedy, but nothing compared to my older brother! By not able to save my brother, he has failed in his mission I entrusted him. So I executed him on the spot as his atonement. But considering his years of service and loyalty, I decreed that his place be taken over by his eldest son with immediate effect!"

Turning to Grand Chancellor, he instructed: "Premier Hu, see to his funeral immediately and gave him a proper burial along with my brother's tomb in Dai Ming Cemetery."

"I will get that done right away, your Majesty." The Grand Chancellor obliged as he got up and left the Imperial Chamber.

"Now that my brother is gone, I will pay my respects to him temporarily at Pagoda Temple Shrine tomorrow morning. All of you are welcome to join me. When my brother's formal funeral arrangements are completed, I let you know on another day. Court Adjourned!"

Upon saying those words, he returned to his podium and then departed with his handmaidens, Eunuchs Lin and Lu through the exit right behind his throne.

While everyone else got up to their knees and left the Imperial Chambers as their minds were still disturbed by Mo Ru Yi's corpse still lying on the floor in pool of blood.

The Pagoda Temple Shrine, an architectural marvel within the palace grounds, stood as a testament to the grandeur and spiritual reverence bestowed upon Emperor Dai Zhong.

Its exterior boasted intricate carvings and ornate decorations, reflecting the Dai Dynasty's rich cultural heritage. The shrine's design featured multiple tiers adorned with traditional motifs, including unicorns, phoenixes, and lotus flowers, symbolizing strength, grace, and purity. Tall spires reached toward the sky, echoing the emperor's lofty aspirations and divine connection.

Upon entry, visitors were greeted by a majestic main hall adorned with exquisite artwork and intricate woodwork. The hall's decor exuded an aura of solemnity and reverence, with golden hues and rich tapestries adorning the walls.

A serene ambiance permeated the space, inviting worshippers and courtiers alike to contemplate and pay homage to the divine. At the heart stood the imposing altar, a focal point of worship and devotion. Crafted from the finest materials and embellished with precious gemstones, the altar radiated an aura of sacredness and power. Intricately carved reliefs depicted scenes from ancient legends and mythologies, serving as a visual representation of the emperor's divine lineage and authority.

Surrounding the altar, rows of intricately carved wooden pews provided seating for courtiers and dignitaries attending religious ceremonies and rituals. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the soft murmur of prayers, creating an atmosphere of tranquillity and spiritual contemplation.

Overall, the Pagoda Temple Shrine stood as a testament to Emperor Dai Zhong's unwavering devotion to his people and his divine mandate to lead with righteousness and virtue. Its grandeur and magnificence served as a constant reminder of his divine authority and sacred duty to uphold the traditions and values of Dai Dynasty.

On that solemn morning, a heavy pall of grief hung over the palace grounds as he and his Imperial Royal Circle made their way to the Pagoda Temple Shrine. Clad in garments of mourning, the courtiers and attendants walked in solemn procession, their footsteps echoing softly against the marble floors. The air was heavy with sorrow, as the realization of Dai Chong's tragic fate weighed heavily on the hearts of all who gathered. Mo Ru Yi's failure to protect him had left a deep wound in the hearts of all who had hoped for his return, including the Majesty.

Upon entering the shrine, a sense of reverence enveloped the gathering, as courtiers and attendants bowed their heads in silent prayer. The flickering light of candles cast shadows upon the walls, illuminating the sombre scene with a gentle glow. Incense wafted through the air, its fragrant smoke rising in supplication to the heavens.

Approaching the altar, Dai Zhong knelt in prayer, his hands clasped in solemn reverence. Behind him, his Imperial Royal Circle followed suit, their heads bowed in silent tribute to his late brother. As they offered their prayers and condolences, the weight of his brother's absence loomed large, a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the inevitability of fate.

In the hushed silence of the shrine, the emperor and his retinue remained

immersed in their prayers, seeking solace and strength in the face of loss. For Dai Chong, who had been destined to reclaim his rightful throne, the morning's solemn ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of earthly power and the enduring legacy of those who had gone before.

Throughout the solemn event, Grand Chancellor Premier Hu and Chief Advisor and Decree Reader Chen Xi shared meaningful glances and exchanged subtle smiles, all while maintaining their positions of reverence on their knees.

Unbeknownst to the rest of the assembly, this seemingly innocuous interaction concealed a carefully orchestrated plot. Their discreet communication served as a silent affirmation of their shared objectives, hidden from the prying eyes of the court. Behind the facade of mourning for Dai Chong, they were united in their determination to ensure Dai Zhong's continued reign as ruler.

In regards with their fellow member, Imperial Magistrate and Advisor Mo Ru Yi, it was unfortunate that he be made as scapegoat by the Majesty. Despite faithfully executing the directives of the Grand Chancellor and his soon-to-return nephew, Hu Qi, Ru Yi bore the brunt of blame and paid with his life for his failure to protect the Majesty's older brother.

Princess Dai Yu found herself immersed in profound grief and mourning following the tragic events that had unfolded.

Her once vibrant demeanour had been replaced with a frail and pallid appearance. She spent her days either confined to her bed or weeping inconsolably outside her chambers as night fell. Despite being served three meals daily, she struggled to eat normally, her mind consumed by the recent tragedies that had befallen her in a matter of days.

At night, while the palace slept, she sought solace in her music, artwork, and poetry, clinging to memories of happier times with her family before the First Capital invasion. For news of Li Neng Yuan and his family being ambushed and even possibly murdered on the way to their old hometown, followed by the tragic fate of her older brother, Dai Chong, from her handmaiden Yin Er, left her utterly devastated.

Despite her efforts to pray continuously and secure his release through her other brother and current Majesty into negotiating with Shibeibu Empire ruler, their older brother still ended up being killed on his way back. The weight of these losses bore heavily upon her, plunging her into sickness and despair. Her anxiety turned to anger and despair, compounded by the uncertainty surrounding the fate of her loved ones.

She found herself questioning her own role even as Royal Highness in those tragedies, haunted by the possibility that she could have done more to prevent them. As she grappled with her overwhelming grief, she could not shake the feeling that there was more to the story. That perhaps darker forces were at play behind those senseless ambushes.

Despite her despair, she was determined to uncover the truth behind the deaths of her loved ones. Suspicious of the circumstances surrounding the ambushes, she could not shake the feeling that there was more to the story than met the eye. Could the Grand Chancellor Premier Hu and his equally treacherous Imperial Royal Circle lackeys be responsible?

Whatever it might be, she resolved to seek justice for her older brother and Neng Yuan, uncover the truth and hold those responsible to account upon realizing that now she could be their only hope.

Upon entering the Highness's chamber with her breakfast tray and plate, Yin Er was taken aback to find the dinner - she had served the night before - still left untouched on the table.

A sense of shock and dismay washed over her as she realized that the meal had been left to sit overnight. Worried about the possibility of attracting pests, she quickly removed the oval-shaped plate lid and covered the uneaten dinner, a task she would have typically completed or even cleared the cutlery, empty tray, plates and bowl had she not been dismissed early by the Highness.

Despite her desire to assist and alleviate the Highness's distress, she understood the importance of respecting her wishes. The Highness's grief and frustration were palpable, given the recent tragedies involving her beloved man and older brother.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, she hesitated to intrude further, opting instead to honour the Highness's request for solitude. Though she yearned to offer comfort and support, she understood the boundaries of her role as a maid and chose to tread carefully, mindful of the Highness's emotional state.

Following her instincts, she ventured outside, where she discovered the Highness seated on a stone stool beside a stone table nestled within the small garden. The tranquil ambiance of the garden seemed to envelop the Highness as she sat, her gaze distant and contemplative. Despite the surrounding beauty of the garden, it was evident that her mind was preoccupied with weighty thoughts and emotions.

As she approached, she observed the Highness's serene yet introspective demeanour, silently acknowledging the depth of her contemplation amidst the peaceful setting of the garden.

"Your Highness." Yin Er called out softly, her voice tinged with concern. In normal circumstances, she would have followed up with your breakfast is ready or even asked why she had not eaten the dinner served last night. Yet upon seeing the Highness's still serious and solemn look, she decided to refrain from uttering those words.

"Your Highness!" She called out again when the Highness remained unresponsive, prompting the Highness to turn slowly to face her. Tears glistened in the latter's eyes as she spoke, her voice heavy with sorrow.

"For years, I have been waiting, praying to see and be reunited with my older brother only to have my hopes dashed just like that," She said, her words punctuated by the gentle swipe of her hand wiping away tears.

To offer solace, Yin Er spoke softly, her words carrying a comforting tone. "Your Highness, I am really sorry about what happened to Li Neng Yuan, his family, and now your older brother. But the dead cannot be brought back alive, and you must take care of yourself."

"I already lost my parents during the First Capital invasion, and now my older brother. Although my other brother is still with me, he is still influenced by Premier Hu and pretends nothing has happened." She lamented, her voice tinged with bitterness and grief.

However, Yin Er sought to offer a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness of the Highness's despair. "But I just learned from Eunuch Lin that the Majesty and the whole Imperial Royal Circle were at Pagoda Temple Shrine this morning to pay their respects to your older brother. He also arranged for your older brother's tomb to be set up at Dai Ming Cemetery, even though his body was yet to be found."

Though it was a small gesture, it was one she hoped to convey acknowledgment and respect for the Highness's grief and the loss she had endured.

"Also, the bodies of Li Neng Yuan and his family have not been located or confirmed. Hence, there remains a faint possibility that they may yet be alive." She conveyed, acknowledging the difficulty of her message and recognizing that it might either offer solace to the Highness or upset her further.

Instead, the Highness replied, "Let's pray your optimism holds true. Regardless of their fate, I am resolved to uncover the truth. My instincts suggest that these ambushes are orchestrated either by the Grand Chancellor himself or in collaboration with Shibeibu forces."

Observing her resolute gaze and determined look, Yin Er chose to remain silent again.

"Do you recall what Li Neng Yuan said when I last summoned him to Dai Pavilion Hall?" The Highness's sudden inquiry caught Yin Er off guard.

Yin Er, visibly surprised, paused before responding, "Forgive me, your Highness. I don't quite recall. It was quite some time ago, and I recall only our conversations and initial talk with Neng Yuan before you dismissed me and Er Fen."

Acknowledging Yin Er's explanation with a nod, the Highness continued, "Li Neng Yuan mentioned he could not help me in finding my older brother since it was not within his capability and job scope. However, he did recommend me to a fortune teller named De Qi, who also happens to be your godfather."

"Indeed, your Highness." Yin Er remembered that part better. "You and Er Fen visited his shop for a consultation while you sent me on another errand."

"But unfortunately, your brother seemed preoccupied and did not acknowledge us." The Highness added. " So Yin Er, instead of mere verbal solace, I need you to arrange for him to see me. If he can help, I increase your pay immediately."

Though hesitant, Yin Er agreed, "Okay, your Highness. I try."

"No, Yin Er." The Highness corrected firmly and finally smiling. "I don't want you to try. I want you to bring himright here right now."

Which took Yin Er completely by surprise.

De Qi, upon receiving the unexpected news from his goddaughter Yin Er about the Highness's request to see him, experienced shock and delight.

For it marked his first invitation into Dai Palace, despite having accompanied Yin Er and his son Kai to the Pyramid Temple Shrine, which was accessible to the public within the palace vicinity.

Curious about the urgency of the summons, De Qi inquired with Yin Er, who explained that the Highness sought his assistance regarding her older brother, presumed to have perished in Shibeibu Empire ambush during a rescue mission ordered by the current Majesty. Although arrangements had been made for her brother's tomb in Dai Ming Cemetery and prayers at the Pagoda Temple Shrine, his body remained unfounded, leading the Highness to doubt his demise. She hoped De Qi's divination skills could shed light on her brother's fate.

Despite having ventured beyond his shop to provide services at the Li Family Residence and other homes in the past, De Qi felt a wave of apprehension as he contemplated his upcoming visit to the illustrious Dai Palace for the first time.

Upon reaching the imposing main gates of Dai Palace, they were met by vigilant sentries whose stern inquiries demanded their purpose for seeking entry. With a poised demeanour, Yin Er presented her seal, issued by the Highness, attesting to her status as one of the handmaidens, thereby validating their visit. Once, their credentials were verified, they were ushered through the grand gates by Eunuch Gong and were greeted by an awe-inspiring sight.

Towering structures adorned with intricate carvings and embellishments rose majestically before them, their imposing presence a testament to the grandeur of the imperial abode. The walls, constructed with precision and adorned with ornate designs, spoke of a rich history and unparalleled craftsmanship. De Qi found himself transfixed by the sheer magnificence of the architecture, each edifice standing as a testament to the power and opulence of the Dai Dynasty.

Approaching the Highness's tower, they encountered yet another set of gates, each guarded by vigilant sentinels. Eunuch Gong, ever the adept guide, took charge of explaining their purpose to the sentries, ensuring a smooth passage for Yin Er and De Qi. With a nod of approval from the guards, they were granted entry into the inner sanctum of the tower on their own this time.

As they ventured deeper into the palace grounds, his senses were overwhelmed by the sights and sounds that surrounded him. Lush gardens bloomed with vibrant flora, their fragrant perfume mingling with the gentle rustle of leaves. Marble pathways, meticulously laid out, wound their way through the verdant landscape, inviting exploration. The white palace buildings, with their blue tiered roofs and intricate details, exuded an air of holiness and timeless elegance, evoking a sense of reverence and awe in all who beheld them.

For De Qi, each step brought him closer to the heart of the imperial realm, filling him with a profound sense of privilege and wonder.

Upon arriving at the threshold of the Highness's chamber, Yin Er gently nudged her godfather to kneel as gesture of reverence and respect customary in the presence of royalty.

Following suit, she did the same before the Highness, her demeanour reflecting both humility and duty as she spoke: "Your Highness, as you instructed, I brought my godfather De Qi to offer his consultation."

"Greetings, your Highness. I am De Qi." De Qi bowed and paid his respects before the Highness.

In response, the Highness emerged from her chamber to greet them, her presence commanding yet warm with imposing height and in white robes.

"You may both rise and enter," She graciously allowed, gesturing for them to stand before addressing the purpose of their meeting.

"As your goddaughter Yin Er is one of my handmaidens and under my immediate authority, allow me to be direct. My older brother was believed to have perished in a recent ambush by Shibeibu Empire enemies during a rescue attempt mounted by my other brother and current Majesty.

However, his body has not been recovered. Having heard of your services and reputation from Yin Er, I seek your assistance in locating his whereabouts through your fortune-telling abilities."

"Of course, Your Highness. I will do my best." De Qi nodded in acknowledgment before replying with his smile.

"You may take a seat and provide your services now." She said before nodding at Yin Er.

"Here godfather, have a seat." With the Highness's permission, Yin Er guided her godfather to a seat at the circular table, where he prepared to offer his services.

As instructed, De Qi sat and taking his grey backpack, he produced a black cup and three dices with blue dots.

Positioning the cup over the dice as cover, he began vigorously shook and moved them around on the table, attentively listening to the subtle sounds they made as they rolled and collided, deciphering their secret language. Upon being aware of the voices emanating from the dice, he felt a sense of trepidation and apprehension. Taking up the cup, he saw one, two and three blue dots on each dice before turning to the Highness and his goddaughter and asking: "Your Highness, do you want to hear the truth or what you want to hear?"

"Whatever is on your mind or what the dice told you, feel free to speak.." The Highness responded while his goddaughter looked just as anxious.

"Regarding your older brother, I am afraid he might already met his fate. Even if he is still alive now, he might not hold on for long." He answered sadly.

Upon hearing those words, the Highness's hopes seemed to dissipate, replaced once again by a heavy cloud of despair, evident in the downturn of her expression and the averted gaze.

Yin Er, feeling the weight of the moment, approached her godfather with a mixture of concern and scepticism.

"Are you sure of your analysis?" she asked, her tone tinged with doubt.

Normally, she would not have questioned her godfather's judgment so directly. After all, he had been a guiding figure in looking after and upbringing her. However, given the current situation and presence of her Highness, she felt compelled to seek clarity, even if it meant challenging his expertise.

"Truth being said, your older brother had been going through tremendous hardships after being in captivity and slavery for so long." De Qi answered calmly with his grave analysis.

"With no one to help and speak up for him, he had to fend for himself even if the odds were greatly stacked against him. In any other place, he could have survived and thrived. But not in enemy territories whereby even the Gods would not be on his side."

Yin Er turned to her superior, her expression filled with concern as she asked, "Your Highness, what do you want me to do now?"

Despite her tears and weight of her grief, the Highness maintained her composure while responding: "You may escort him out, but not before getting Eunuch Gong to compensate him 100 gold bars token."

Understanding her instructions implicitly, Yin Er nodded and turned back to her godfather. "Please follow me." She said gently, gesturing for him to accompany her.

With a respectful bow to the Highness, Yin Er and her godfather left the chambers, their departure marked by a moment of solemn acknowledgment of her Highness's authority, despite the heaviness of the atmosphere.

The atmosphere outside the palace main entrance gates buzzed with anticipation and activity as Imperial commanders, eunuchs, and members of the Imperial Royal Circle gathered for security and to witness the historic arrival and appointment of Princess Demeika, First Highness and daughter of Shibeibu King Monarch Zengis, as Empress Dowager and Majesty's wife.

The air was filled with a sense of reverence and ceremony, as guards stood at attention and preparations were made to receive the esteemed and new member of royal family. Inside the palace, the Imperial Royal Chambers were all adorned with elaborate decorations and filled with dignitaries, awaiting her arrival

Emperor Dai Zhong, along with Grand Chancellor Premier Hu, Chief Advisor Chen Xi and more guards, stood poised to welcome the incoming hovercrafts and their entourage.

As the vessels descended upon the landing ramp of Hangar Bay, the atmosphere crackled with excitement. Among the three approaching hovercrafts, one carried Demeika. With grace and poise, she disembarked from the craft, accompanied by her retinue and a sense of regal presence.

He and his aides approached her, extending warm greetings and gestures of welcome as they prepared to escort her to the palace and the Imperial Royal Chambers. As the procession made its way through the palace corridors, they were flanked by additional guards, adding to the sense of grandeur and significance surrounding the occasion. The corridors echoed with the sound of footsteps and the rustle of ceremonial robes, underscoring the solemnity of the moment.

All eyes were on Demeika, now officially recognized and crowned as Dai Dynasty Empress Dowager, as she made her way to assume her rightful place within the Imperial Royal Chambers. The coronation ceremony marked not only her ascension to the esteemed position of Empress Dowager but also the beginning of a new era within the Dynasty. With the support of Emperor Dai Zhong and his Imperial Royal Circle advisors, she also played a pivotal role in shaping the future of Yuexin System.

As they reached the Imperial Royal Chambers, the gathered dignitaries stood in reverence, acknowledging the significance of the moment and the weight of responsibility that now rested on the shoulders of the newly crowned Empress Dowager. Her marriage and appointment not only signalled a significant event in the internal affairs of Dai Dynasty but also marked the first official step towards peace between it and Shibeibu Empire. For years, both kingdoms had been at war, their armies clashing on battlefields and their people suffering the consequences of war.

Today, a new chapter in their relationship was about to unfold. The presence and crowning of the eldest Shibeibu princess in the heart of the Dai Dynasty was a tangible symbol and first step of reconciliation and progress. It signified a willingness on both sides to set aside past grievances and work towards a future of cooperation and mutual understanding.

As newly appointed Empress Dowager, Demeika made her grand entrance into the Imperial Royal Chambers, her presence commanded attention. Accompanied by her eight handmaidens, carefully chosen by Majesty himself, she exuded an air of regal elegance and authority.

Inside the chambers, the assembled commanders and members of the Imperial Royal Circle, who had been standing in line on either side, immediately knelt and bowed before her, a sign of respect and reverence for her newfound position of power and influence.

"Greetings, Her Majesty!" Came the unified voice of the assembled crowd, their words echoing through the grand chamber. It was a formal acknowledgment of her authority and status, a recognition of her importance within the imperial court and bridging of Dai Dynasty and her Shibeibu Empire.

With her head held high and her expression poised and dignified, she returned the greeting with a gracious nod, acknowledging the homage paid to her by those in attendance. As she took her place upon the throne, surrounded by the symbols of imperial majesty, she embodied the grace and dignity befitting her new role as Empress Dowager.

Starting with beingadorned with a new crown, a symbol of her elevated status and the union between Dai Dynasty and the Shibeibu Empire. The crown, a wedding gift from Dai Majesty to her as his new wife, was a masterpiece of elegance and intricacy. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, it dazzled with its elaborate design and exquisite craftsmanship. Adorned with shimmering gemstones and delicate filigree, casting a regal aura around her head as she took her place beside Emperor Dai Zhong in both thrones.

"Firstly, I like to apologize for not being able to fetch you personally from Shibeibu borders." Dai Zhong faced her and expressed sincerely as they were both seated.

"I appreciate your hospitality, Your Majesty. As ruler, your time is consumed by the demands of governing, yet you still made the effort to greet me personally at Hangar Bay and now here. Your thoughtfulness is truly appreciated." Demeika replied with a graceful smile, her light purple-colored lips curving upward in a subtle and enigmatic gesture.

Then, turning to Premier Hu, Dai Zhong addressed him formally: "Grand Chancellor!"

Premier Hu nodded in acknowledgment of the Majesty's silent command, stepping up to the central position on the blue carpet walkway to present a golden tray adorned with a white envelope bearing the Dai Dynasty unicorn insignia.

Eunuch Lin stepped forth to receive the tray before presenting it to Empress Demeika, who looked at it with curiosity.

"May I ask what it contains?" She inquired; her interest piqued.

With a warm smile, Dai Zhong explained, "Inside contains the Imperial seal, platinum ring, and token key of the highest authority. As the newly crowned Empress, you now have the authority to handle all matters within Dai Dynasty."

Finally, he addressed the assembled crowd, granting them permission to relax the formalities. "You may now dispense with the formalities and rise to your feet."

"Thank you, your Majesty and Her Majesty," They responded respectfully, rising to their feet and returning to their original positions on either flank.

"While I am happy and honoured to have you as my wife and most importantly made peace with your father and Shibeibu Empire," Dai Zhong continued as he addressed her and everyone this time. "it is a pity that my older brother met with a tragic end on his way back and is unable to join us in this memorable event. This is due to my subordinates' negligence and mine as well in failing to protect him."

"Your Majesty, you did the best you could." Demeika responded. "But now that you made peace with my father and kingdom, I am sure your brother will appreciate everything you did in afterlife. Now with me assisting you, let me share your burden and made our kingdoms even stronger in unity."

"Grand Chancellor!" Dai Zhong again called out to him.

"Yes, your Majesty?" Premier Hu again stepped up and asked him.

"How has the arrangements been with my older brother's tomb at Dai Ming Cemetery?" He asked.

"It has been proceeding smoothly as you instructed, your Majesty." The Grand Chancellor answered.

"Get it done by next week. I want everyone to accompany me to pay my respects to him the same way we did at Pagoda Temple Shrine but this time I want the event to be on a grander scale." Dai Zhong demanded.

"Rest assured, I will, your Majesty," The Grand Chancellor obliged as he returned to his flank position.

"Please summon Hu Qi!" Dai Zhong ordered.

Upon his command, the eunuchs echoed the same words.

Shortly after, a tall, elegant young man with brown wavy hair and dressed in white clothing with a magenta tunic and boots entered the chambers. Getting down on his knees and taking a bow before both Majesties, he expressed his greetings: "I, Hu Qi, pay my respects to your and Her Majesties."

"Hu Qi, I am grateful for you escorting the Empress Dowager here." Dai Zhong said. "As a token of my appreciation, I reward you with 600,000 platinum or 300,000 gold bars as well as the position of West District major and law enforcement commander."

"Thank you, your Majesty," Hu Qi expressed his gratitude.

"You may rise now."

"Thank you, your Majesty," Hu Qi repeated as he got to his feet.

Upon doing so, he looked at his uncle - the Grand Chancellor Premier Hu - who in turn nodded in acknowledgment of his nephew's capability and worth for his reward and new position.

The conference meeting room within Grand Chancellor Premier Hu's residence was typically a space of formality and importance, often bustling with activity and discussions of state affairs.

However, on this day, the atmosphere was notably different. The room was adorned with just one sturdy wooden table and two chairs, positioned precisely at the center. The simplicity of the furnishings belied the weight of the decisions often made within those walls. Today, however, it served as a backdrop for a much more personal and intimate meeting.

Outside the room, four Dai guards stood vigilantly, ensuring the security and privacy of the meeting. Inside, two eunuchs and two handmaidens stood quietly, their presence a reminder of the ceremonial nature of the setting. They were poised to assist as needed, yet their demeanour conveyed a sense of respect for the solemnity of the occasion.

Today's meeting held special significance, as it marked a rare reunion between Grand Chancellor Premier Hu and his nephew, Hu Qi. They had not seen each other for quite some time, their paths diverging amidst the grand ceremonies that accompanied the coronation of former Shibeibu Princess Demeika as Dai Empress Dowager and the wife of Majesty Dai Zhong.

The absence of additional attendees underscored the intimacy of the gathering. It was an opportunity for uncle and nephew to reconnect and discuss matters close to their hearts, away from the formalities of court life and state affairs. As they prepared to commence their meeting, there was a sense of anticipation in the air. Both understood the significance of their reunion and the importance of the discussions that would ensue. It was a moment to reflect on family ties and to chart the course of their shared future.

Overall, the conference meeting room served as a quiet sanctuary amidst the grandeur of the palace, providing a serene backdrop for the heartfelt conversations that were about to take place.

Truth being said, Hu Qi's parents used to be politicians and members of the Old Imperial Royal Circle under the late Emperor Dai Ci. During the First Dai Capital Invasion, they sacrificed their lives to protect the Majesty. But not before entrusting their only son Hu Qi to his uncle Premier Hu and his auntie Madam Tang.

Under normal circumstances, Hu Qi should have been with his uncle and auntie from a child to adult. But under Shibeibu General Tetsuban's mercy as well as that of his surrounding battalion, one of the deals his uncle made was to give him away to be adopted and brought up by General Tetsuban and King Monarch Zengis.

As Dai native, Hu Qi could have turned the offer down. But after being conditioned by his uncle to look at the bigger picture, he agreed to offer himself as new-born Shibeibu native instead though his name remained the same after his uncle's hard yet well-planned negotiation deal with Tetsuban.

So instead of being trained in the Dai Academy as a student and soldier, he spent much of his years in Shibeibu's Education And Combat Institute instead, learning to think and fight like any other Shibeibu soldier. However occasionally his uncle and auntie would visit him as a cadet when they were off from their duties and showered him with love as any parent would. That was why he grew close to them despite now being trained as a ruthless warrior in the ways of Shibeibu Empire rather than Dai Dynasty.

"Uncle, I'm still puzzled as to why King Monarch Zengis agrees to marry his eldest daughter to our Majesty as Empress." Hu Qi mused as they sat together at the table.

"Very simple. Because despite being older, she is not the king's biological daughter." His uncle replied with a knowing smile. "Truth is she was a Dai native of Ya Nan industrial region before being adopted following his armies' invasion. In other words, she is to be used as a pawn to check upon and manipulate our Majesty to carry out her current father's instructions. That is what General Tetsuban told me."

"So you are suggesting that this term of the peace treaty holds more weight than the others?" Hu Qi inquired, seeking clarification.

His uncle nodded in agreement before elaborating: "There is another reason why I want her to be here instead of his older brother. It is also my new agreement with General Tetsuban and King Monarch Zengis."

"What is that?" Hu Qi pressed for further details.

"To deflate the Highness's ego and hopefully put her out of position within Dynasty hierarchy." His uncle replied with a hint of calculation.

"Are you referring to Princess Dai Yu? How has she been?" Hu Qi inquired further.

"She has been depressed over the deaths of her and Majesty's older brother as well as someone who was supposed to be Prince Consort and her husband but perished in an attack as well." Premier Hu explained.

"I have not seen her for a long time since childhood." Hu Qi reminisced over the time when they were kids.

"Due to her rebellious nature recently, she has been opposing me and the Majesty time and again. But we have been very tolerant of her since she is the Highness and woman. So to deal with her, I decided to bring in another woman of equal statue and status. And Empress Demeika happens to be that woman."

"Uncle, regardless of what you think of her, I want to see the Highness again." Hu Qi asserted.

"You will, my nephew. With Demeika now as Empress Dowager over everyone else, including the Highness and even Majesty, it will be much easier for us to carry out our plans without much scrutiny."

Having said those words, he and his nephew laughed. After the tension subsided, Premier Hu took the opportunity to address his nephew.

"About you silencing my Commanders Fu and Kuang within Shibeibu territory, isn't that too far?" He inquired, his concern evident.

With a confident smile, his nephew responded, seeking to assuage his uncle's worries. "Their demise was essential. For they knew too much about our plans, and even murdered the Majesty's brother. However, rest assured, uncle, I have arranged two replacements who are not only suitable but even more capable in serving you."

With a gesture reminiscent of Shibeibu military culture, Hu Qi clapped his hands. Upon his command, two armoured men entered the room.

The first had a slightly longer and light-blue mane, while the second person's hair was a vibrant orange. Both were dressed in armor that matched their respective hair colors, but they shared a common theme in black that adorned their attire, representing the overall color scheme of Shibeibu Empire. Adorning their left arms were shields bearing the character Shi and the Empire's insignia of red ring and dragon.

"Allow me to introduce Shibeibu twin brothers Na and Ne," Hu Qi introduced them proudly. "They are elite lieutenants of General Tetsuban and among the finest warriors within Shibeibu military ranks. They are now under your command, gifted to you by General Tetsuban to replace Imperial Commanders Fu and Kuang."

"But they are currently attired in Shibeibu armor, with the Empire's insignia." Premier Hu hesitated slightly, noticing their attire.

"Uncle, isn't that obvious? In front of us, they are. But before the Majesty and others, they will don the uniformed armor of Dai Imperial Commanders," Hu Qi reassured him, addressing his uncle's concerns.

Upon hearing this, Premier Hu smiled on reassurance in his nephew's words.

On learning that her other brother and Majesty had taken a new wife, who was also crowned as Empress Dowager, Princess Dai Yu and her two handmaidens - Er Fen and Yin Er - entered the newly constructed Empress Dowager's Tower and Chambers.

Despite feeling unsettled by this unexpected turn of events, she knelt and paid her respects to the newly appointed Empress along with her handmaidens.

"Greetings, Her Majesty and Empress," They said in unison, acknowledging the presence of the royal figures.

"I am sorry for not attending your coronation ceremony as I have not been feeling well." Dai Yu also offered her apology.

"You need not adhere to formalities, Your Highness." Empress Demeika reassured and gestured her to rise with her warm smile. "I understand."

"Thank you for your understanding, Her Majesty," Dai Yu expressed her gratitude, albeit feeling somewhat awkward addressing a stranger slightly taller than her upon standing up.

"As you are the Highness, I like you to sit beside me so that I can have a better look at you." Empress Demeika suggested, guiding Dai Yu to one of the thrones set up within the chamber.

The chamber exuded an air of regal elegance, adorned with lavish tapestry and ornate furnishings fit for royalty. The chamber was spacious, with tall arched windows allowing streams of sunlight to illuminate the room, casting a warm glow over the opulent surroundings.

In the center of the chamber, two majestic thrones were placed side by side, one slightly larger than the other to accommodate both Her Majesty and Highness. These thrones were intricately carved from rich mahogany and upholstered with sumptuous velvet cushions, symbolizing their authority and status within the palace.

Standing beside each throne were the respective handmaidens of both Empress Dowager and the Highness, their presence adding to the solemnity of the scene. Clad in elegant attire befitting their positions, the handmaidens stood with poise and grace, ready to attend to the needs of their royal mistresses at a moment's notice.

Once seated, Empress Demeika turned to Princess Dai Yu with her still warm smile and said: "Though I am not your natural mother nor sister, we are now family within the same dynasty. You can consider me as such, and looking at you, you are even more beautiful than I imagined."

Graciously, Dai Yu accepted the compliment, though she was still feeling uncomfortable. "Thank you for your kind words, Her Majesty. The last time I had a mother was before the First Capital invasion. I am grateful to have another woman as my companion now."

Demeika's smile remained reassuring as she offered her support. "Please feel free to confide in me if you have any problems. Despite my position as Empress, I am here for you." Then turning to her attendants, she addressed them formally. "You may all leave now."

"Yes, Her Majesty." With respectful nod, all the handmaidens, including those of the Highness, Er Fen and Yin Er, exited the chamber, leaving only the two of them.

With a more serious demeanour, Demeika broached the subject. "Have you heard any rumours recently?"

Dai Yu nodded; her unease evident. "Yes, there have been many rumours, but I choose not to believe them."

Demeika nodded thoughtfully. "Rumours often stem from some truth. What have you heard so far?"

Dai Yu hesitated, feeling uncomfortable about the topic. "Most of them revolve around my older brother and the late General Xue Lei."

"I'm not interested in those. What I want to know is if there are any rumours about me?" Demeika's curiosity was evident in her gaze.

Dai Yu hesitated before responding, her gaze lowered. "Yes, but I am hesitant to mention them before you."

With a reassuring smile, Demeika encouraged her to speak freely. "It's alright, Your Highness. Please tell me. I hold no judgment."

Inhaling deeply, Dai Yu related. "The rumours imply that you are not from Dai Dynasty but Shibeibu Empire. They claim that your marriage to my brother, the Majesty, is merely a political strategy to secure peace between our kingdoms."

Demeika's expression shifted, betraying a hint of displeasure. "Yes, it is true that I am from Shibeibu Empire. But so what? Why will anyone spread such malicious rumours, especially now that your brother and his Imperial Royal Circle have officially accepted and appointed me as Empress Dowager?"

Apologizing once more, Dai Yu expressed her regret. "I am sorry if my words offended you, Her Majesty."

Demeika's smile returned, tinged with determination. "It's okay. Who I am is not entirely within my control. We both faced circumstances beyond our choosing even if our backgrounds differ. Now that peace has been secured between our kingdoms, isn't it the most prudent course of action to end the conflict and war?"

Agreeing with resolve, Dai Yu affirmed her support. "Yes, Her Majesty, I agree. That is why I choose not to believe them but trust in your intentions."

With a determined gleam in her eyes, Demeika vowed, "Now that I hold full authority in Dai Dynasty, I will not allow these rumours to tarnish my reputation. I am going to end them once and for all."

"Pardon me for asking, Her Majesty." Dai Yu felt her turn to ask this time. "Is my and Majesty's older brother really killed?"

"That is what your other brother and the Majesty announced during the ceremony." Demeika affirmed.

"Then why is his body not found?" Dai Yu pressed further; her curiosity piqued.

"That l am also not sure." Demeika admitted, her expression mirroring Dai Yu's puzzlement.

Following that and consultation from Kai Seven thereafter, Princess Dai Yu and her handmaidens headed to Dai Garden Hall.

Standing on the Dai Garden Hall balcony, flanked by her faithful handmaidens, Er Fen and Yin Er, she gazed out at the tranquil scene before her. Memories of her past encounters with Li Neng Yuan flooded her mind. Despite the serene surroundings, a sense of uncertainty lingered within her heart, overshadowing her thoughts.

With Er Fen and Yin Er by her side, she found solace in their presence, their unwavering support providing her with strength during these uncertain times. She reminisced about the homecoming banquet her brother held for her and the enchanting dance she shared with the man supposed to be her husband and Prince Consort, their voices filled with nostalgia as they recalled the magic of that evening.

However, beneath the surface of their reminiscences laid a veil of worry and apprehension. The events that had transpired since that fateful night weighed heavily on her mind, casting a shadow over her memories. The ambush on him and his family in the forest and the uncertainty surrounding his fate. These remained on her mind as she stood on the balcony, overlooking the beauty of the garden especially the pine trees.

Despite her uncertainty, she remained resolute, her determination unwavering in the face of adversity. With Er Fen and Yin Er by her side, she found strength in their solidarity, knowing that together, they would weather whatever challenges lay ahead. As she looked out at the peaceful scene before her, she held onto hope, praying for Neng Yuan's safety and for the day when they would meet again.

"Greetings, your Highness!" A new male voice suddenly emerged into the atmosphere, taking Dai Yu and her handmaidens by surprise.

Turning around, they saw a tall and elegant brown-haired man - in white clothing with magenta tunic and boots - approaching and getting down on his knees before them.

"Who are you and how did you get in here?" Dai Yu asked him, feeling suspicious and annoyed at his sudden intrusion into what was supposed to be a private sanctuary for her and her handmaidens.

"It is me Hu Qi." The man introduced with a smile as he got up. "I'm the nephew of Grand Chancellor Premier Hu. I just returned from Shibeibu Empire having escorted the Empress here. It is my honour and pleasure to see you again, your Highness."

"How did you get in here?" Dai Yu repeated her second question.

"My uncle told me, and I came here with his permission." Hu Qi answered.

"Since you just returned from Shibeibu Empire, there are guidelines you are not familiar with here." Dai Yu said with her resolute gaze remaining upon knowing his identity. "Your uncle may be the Grand Chancellor, but I am the Highness. Even with his permission, you are still trespassing in private Dai Garden Hall withoutmy permission."

"I am sorry for alarming you with my sudden presence." Hu Qi apologized while still smiling. "But I badly want to see you again after all these years in the other side. For the last time we met, we were kids playing before the First Dai Capital invasion."

"That was so long ago. I don't remember much, and I do not want to remember again." Dai Yu retained her cold expression as she now recalled the times when she and Hu Qi were kids. But even so, he did something unforgivable which made her lost respect for him the same she had for his uncle.

"It has been a long time since. How have you been, your Highness?" Hu Qi enquired.

Despite his concerned look, she was well-aware of his ulterior motives the same she was well-aware of his uncle's. Still she answered: "I am fine. But you should not come here without first informing me or my maids in advance."

"I already said I am sorry." Hu Qi looked a little irritated but still maintained his smile. "After all these years, you are looking more beautiful and taller than before. So Your Highness, can I now ask for your permission to spend some time with you?"

"That won't be necessary." Dai Yu turned him down. "In fact I am about to leave. By trespassing here without my permission, you have already overstepped my personal boundaries. Let this be my first and last warning to you, Hu Qi."

"But I come here specially to see you out of goodwill. Aren't you going to give me some face?" Hu Qi asked, now looking disappointed.

Knowing full well his intentions behind his seemingly concerned look especially after what he tried to do to her even as kids that still pained her mentally now that he reminded her, she retained her cold composure and said: "No. Also if I see you coming here again without my permission, I will not hesitate to punish you and inform your uncle."

Having said that, she and her handmaidens departed.

Feeling a mix of frustration and determination after his encounter with the Highness, Hu Qi redirected his steps towards the Empress Dowager's Chambers instead of his uncle's residence.

Armed with newfound knowledge about Demeika's true background provided by his uncle, he saw her as a potential leverage to further his ambitions, particularly in gaining proximity to Dai Yu, as her status stood just above the Highness and below the Majesty.

Mindful of the repercussions of his previous indiscretion, Hu Qi approached his audience with the Empress Dowager with caution. He navigated through the proper channels by seeking permission from the sentry security, handmaidens, and eunuchs before gaining access to the Empress. His journey led him to the recently completed Empress Dowager Tower, where he awaited her arrival with a sense of anticipation.

As Empress Demeika entered the chamber accompanied by her retinue of handmaidens, Hu Qi immediately knelt before her, bowing respectfully as she took her place on the throne podium.

"Greetings, Her Majesty, I, Hu Qi, paid my respects to you." He said.

"You may dispense with the formalities, Hu Qi." Empress Demeika responded. "What do you like to see me about?"

Getting up to his feet, Hu Qi smiled and replied: "Her Majesty, I need a favor from you and only you can help me."

The Empress, her demeanour composed yet guarded, pressed for clarity. "Which is?"

"To date and marry the Highness - Princess Dai Yu as my wife and taking over as Prince Consort." Hu Qi stated plainly, his gaze unwavering.

Demeika's suspicion deepened, prompting her to probe further. "On what basis should I help you?"

Hu Qi's response held a veiled threat, his smile never faltering. "On the basis that I, my uncle, and even your former subordinate - General Tetsuban - know about your real background."

As Demeika processed his words, a tension hung in the air. "And if I refuse?"

"Then please do not blame me and my uncle for revealing who you really are to the Majesty." Hu Qi countered, his tone carrying a subtle warning. "For despite being the eldest daughter and First Highness of Shibeibu Empire, you are not King Monarch Zengis's real daughter."

Her indignation flared at his audacity. "Hu Qi! Are you threatening me? Do you have any idea who you are talking to?"

"Of course, I do, Her Majesty. You are the Empress Dowager but let me also inform you that my uncle - the Grand Chancellor - holds the final say here in Dai Dynasty. Even over the Majesty and Highness due to the fact he was an emergency ruler and legal guardian looking after them as children. So if even the Majesty and Highness can't do anything to control him, neither can you, Her Majesty!"

"Hu Qi, how dare you speak to me in that tone!" Demeika stood up to confront him directly. Standing up, she commanded: "Guards! Get this man out of my sight!"

Problem was nobody responded and she, Hu Qi and her equally shocked handmaidens were the only ones within the chamber.

His laughter cut through the tension; his confidence unwavering. "It's no use. The guards here tend to listen to my uncle and Majesty more. They are here to protect you simply out of respect for you as Her Majesty on their account. But if you are willing to help me, I can help you in return."

Stunned by the audacity of Hu Qi's proposal, Demeika found herself momentarily speechless, her mind racing with the implications of his words. Regaining her composure, she settled back into her throne, her expression a mask of contemplation.

After a moment of silence, she posed a question born of curiosity and cautious consideration. "Help me on what?"

Hu Qi's response was swift and calculated, his words carrying a hint of persuasion. "On being the true Empress Dowager you should be instead of being manipulated by your adopted father and even the Majesty as your husband. I know you want complete control of Dai Dynasty and armies to use them against your foster father and Shibeibu armies as vengeance for your real parents while I want the Highness to be my wife. With my help, you can achieve your goals much faster. Provided you help me first. What do you say?"

Empress Demeika mulled over his proposition, weighing the potential risks and rewards.

The allure of reclaiming control over her destiny and exacting vengeance against her enemies tugged at her ambitions, yet the implications of aligning herself with Hu Qi and his ambitions gave her pause.

As she deliberated, the weight of her decision hung heavy in the air, each passing moment laden with significance.

"But the Highness already has someone else in mind. How do I convince her otherwise?" Demeika found herself grappling with a dilemma as the news, relayed by her handmaidens and confirmed by both the Highness and the Majesty himself, stirred a sense of uncertainty within her.

"Who may that person be?" Hu Qi's voice was laced with seriousness as he wondered about the identity of the individual in question.

"That I'm not sure at this moment," She admitted, her tone reflecting her uncertainty. "My best advice for you is to forget her."

"Her Majesty, if you can't help me, neither can I," Hu Qi threatened in annoyed tone. "For me and my uncle to expose you is very easy. We can crown you. We can also dethrone you. In a matter of days. Without alarming everybody."

Feeling the weight of his ultimatum, she grappled with the implications of her next move. "How do you want me to help you get close to the Highness and win her over?" she inquired, her voice tinged with a mixture of perplexity and trepidation.

"That depends entirely on you and your ability as Empress Dowager." He replied, his words laden with unspoken implications and smile.

The second-floor dining area of Dai En brothel, reserved for executive and elite clientele, exuded an air of opulence and exclusivity.

As patrons ascend the staircase adorned with intricate carvings and rich tapestries, they entered a lavish space characterized by polished marble floors, plush velvet curtains, and ornate chandeliers casting a warm glow over the room.

The dining area itself boasted finely crafted wooden tables adorned with crisp white linens and gleaming silverware, set against a backdrop of intricately painted murals depicting scenes of indulgence and luxury. Plush velvet chairs provided comfortable seating, while discreet alcoves offered privacy for intimate conversations.

Hu Qi, seeking solace and distraction from his recent setbacks, returned to the familiar comforts of Dai En brothel's elite dining area. Despite being rejected by Princess Dai Yu, he found solace in the power he wields through his association with Empress Demeika.

Seated at a private table, he indulged in the finest delicacies and vintage wines, surrounded by the subtle murmurs of other patrons engaged in their own discreet conversations. Here, amidst the sumptuous surroundings of the brothel, he plotted his next moves, leveraging his newfound alliances to further his personal ambitions.

As he lounged in the luxurious confines of the Dai En brothel's elite dining area, his attention was drawn to a figure approaching him, unmistakably one of Princess Dai Yu's handmaidens with her distinctive green hair. Intrigued by her unexpected presence in such surroundings, he could not help but wonder about her purpose there.

Yet, any curiosity quickly dissipated as his focus returned to his own desires and ambitions. Determined to seize what he wanted, he rose from his seat and intercepted the handmaiden, blocking her path with an air of entitlement.

"Hey! Aren't you one of the Highness's maids?" He asked, his tone laced with arrogance. "If so, what're you doing here? Since the Highness rejected me as you saw, why don't you take her place and spend the night with me?"

With a sense of entitlement, he seized her wrist, his grip firm as he attempted to pull her closer, oblivious to any resistance she might offer.

"Let me go!You are hurting me!I said, let me go!"

Her pleas fell on deaf ears as the young brown-haired man persisted, his grip tightening despite her struggles. She felt the sting of his grasp as he forcibly restrained her, his strength overpowering her attempts to break free. Memories of their previous encounter on the Dai Garden Hall balcony flashed through her mind, fuelling her resistance against him.

Desperate to escape, Er Fen attempted to flee, but her efforts were futile as he swiftly subdued her, pulling her back into his grasp with a forceful embrace. In her hand, the woodcutting knife trembled with her determination to defend herself, but against his superior strength, it proved ineffective as he disarmed her easily.

As she fought against him, her thoughts turned to Chi Feng, her trusted friend and trusted ally. She longed for his presence, knowing he would come to her aid in a heartbeat. Yet, the realization dawned that he was absent, perhaps heading to City Plaza on an errand, leaving her vulnerable in this perilous situation.

In her moment of desperation, a glimmer of hope emerged as another woman approached them, clad in an orange and dark blue tunic.

Seeing her nephew taking advantage of whom she recognized as one of Highness's handmaidens, Madam Tang took control by asking in her commanding tone.

"Hu Qi! What are you doing here with her?"

"Let me go!" Obviously taking advantage of her sudden presence and nephew's shock, the handmaiden freed herself by breaking away and running towards the stairs.

Just as her nephew was about to give chase, she held up her hand to restrain him before saying: "Let her go. For she is one of the Highness's handmaidens. Before that she used to be one of the girls here with a year contract still to run. Given her present circumstances, it will be unwise of you to touch her."

Looking frustrated, her nephew asked: "Why not?"

"She is very resistant to men due to her unhappy past and under protection from Highness, she won't listen to you." Madam Tang explained. "So why did you make things difficult for her?"

Her nephew turned away and sat back in his seat before slamming his hand on the table, causing the dishes to rattle.

"You need not be discouraged. For there are other girls here. You just pick one or few randomly." Madam Tang advised him.

"I am not interested in any of the girls here!" Hu Qi objected like a pampered child. "Unless…"

"Unless what?" She enquired.

"Unless Princess Dai Yu agrees to marry me." He answered, while making eye-contact with her.

"Is this some joke?" She could not believe what she just heard.

"Auntie, I am serious." Hu Qi maintained his stand. "Please trust me."

"Problem is the Highness already has someone in mind before you come here. It will be very hard to convince her otherwise." Madam Tang revealed the reality of the situation at hand.

"That is exactly why I want her more than anybody else!" Hu Qi said. "If I marry her, I will be the new Prince Consort and with you and my uncle, it will strengthen our positions in both Imperial Royal Circle and palace."

"There is something else you haven't told me, but I can sense from your expression." On hearing those words, Madam Tang immediately knew his intentions by intuition as former military law enforcer and woman herself.

"What do you mean?" Hu Qi inquired.

"You want to have sex and sleep with her, don't you?" She asked. "Then when she gets pregnant, she has no choice but to concede to your wishes. If that is what you think, my nephew, you have underestimated her. For things have changed tremendously since when you parted as kids. But back then, I and my uncle already knew your personality."

"But can you help me as my auntie since you are also woman?" Hu Qi pleaded with her more out of desperation.

Shaking her head, Madam Tang answered: "I'm sorry I can't help you on this. Anyway, I am here for another reason. Your uncle wants to see you right now and I am here to bring you back. We can talk about this another time."

Looking reluctant, her nephew decided to comply.

Heading downstairs, Er Fen decided to head outside for fresh air despite realizing her actions would certainly offend Madam Huang who was now in charge due to Lady Li Shi's absence.

For days, she had not seen Chi Feng nor Lady Li Shi ever since delivering her cooked meals to him the last time she saw him in swordplay practice and Lady Li Shi offered to help her in comforting and convincing Chi Feng to eat. So much so that she wondered if they were okay, together or if something had happened.

Just as she was about to head back into the brothel after a short break, she smiled upon seeing them heading towards her.

"Chi Feng!" She called out cheerfully despite what happened to her earlier.

Chi Feng turned and reciprocated with his smile as well while Lady Li Shi headed back into the brothel as usual.

Though she did not know what Lady Li Shi told him or how she convinced him, Er Fen was glad that the disciple was now back to his usual normal self though he could not speak verbally.

"How have you been? It has been days since I last saw you." Er Fen asked. "Seeing you smile, I am really happy."

The Lakeside Pavilion stood as a serene refuge just outside the grandeur of Dai Pavilion Hall within the expansive grounds of the Dai palace.

Nestled amidst lush greenery and overlooking a tranquil lake, it exuded an aura of calm and tranquillity. An architectural marvel, with intricately carved wooden pillars and a gracefully curved roof that mirrors the gentle contours of the surrounding landscape. Its open design enabled the natural beauty of the surroundings to flow seamlessly into the structure, creating a harmonious blend of man-made elegance and natural splendour.

At the center, a raised platform offered a commanding view of the lake, the still waters reflecting the azure sky above. Here, one could sit and contemplate in solitude, lulled by the soft rustle of leaves and the distant murmur of water.

Surrounding the Pavilion, meticulously tended gardens burst with vibrant colors, adding to the sense of serenity and enchantment. Flowering bushes and ancient trees provided shade and shelter, while winding pathways invited leisurely strolls along the water's edge.

Whether used for quiet reflection, intimate gatherings, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, the Lakeside Pavilion was a cherished sanctuary within the bustling heart of the Dai palace, offering a haven of peace and tranquillity amidst the chaos of courtly life.

But today it served as an exquisite setting for the second meeting of Her Majesty and Highness.

As Empress Demeika awaited the arrival of Princess Dai Yu, she stood at the center of the Pavilion, clad in flowing black robes adorned with a regal purple tunic.

This time, her choice of attire and colors reflected her dual identity, embodying both her status and her ties to Shibeibu Empire. Flanked by her six handmaidens, each veiled in equally dark robes with red tunics and veiled masks, they all stood out as striking figures against the natural beauty of the Pavilion.

Their presence added an aura of intrigue and solemnity to the proceedings, catching even the Highness and her handmaidens off guard as they approached.

Princess Dai Yu, accompanied by her trusted handmaidens Er Fen and Yin Er, entered the Pavilion with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.

The unexpected sight of Empress Dowager and her entourage in completely different attire gave pause to her who hesitated momentarily before proceeding with grace and poise.

As they came face to face again, the atmosphere crackled with tension and anticipation. The serene surroundings of the Lakeside Pavilion provided a stark contrast to the underlying currents of power and politics that simmered beneath the surface. It was within this elegant yet charged environment that the fate of Dai Dynasty might be shaped by the delicate dance between two formidable women of influence.

As both took their seats before the stone table overlooking the beautiful and peaceful lake, their handmaidens took a few steps backwards while still standing behind.

"I've something to discuss with you." Demeika stated her purpose. while one of the maids poured tea for them.

"Whatever is on your mind, feel free to tell me, Her Majesty." Dai Yu responded.

Still smiling, she asked: "About your Prince Consort whom you selected as your husband in recent competition to win your hand, are there any news of him?"

"May I ask why you suddenly bring this up?" Dai Yu inquired, feeling unsettled by Empress's unexpected involvement in what she perceived as her personal matter.

"I noticed that you have been looking sad since I came here. If you carry on like this, your health will be affected and as Empress, I am concerned for your well-being." Demeika answered while holding the cup and taking a sip of tea.

"Please do not worry, Her Majesty. I am fine." Dai Yu assured, despite knowing deep down that she was not telling the truth.

"You can't put it that way. As to whether your Prince Consort is still alive or not, it remains uncertain and most importantly, your marriage cannot be delayed further." Demeika clarified.

Upon hearing those words, Dai Yu felt even more uneasy. While she had no intention to marry anyone, her feelings for Li Neng Yuan remained true to her heart. While what the Empress said was true, she felt as though she was being rushed into marriage, possibly to someone else.

"If you don't mind, I have someone better for you." Demeika suddenly suggested while she was still pondering.

"Her Majesty, I have no intention to marry anyone else." Dai Yu stated her stand.

However, Demeika dismissed Dai Yu's response with a casual gesture and continued to advocate for her proposal: "Before you turn me down, I hope you can hear me out first. For this person is no ordinary guy. He is handsome, highly skilled in combat and most importantly have prominent ties with our kingdoms."

"Who is he?" Dai Yu asked, feeling puzzled by what she heard.

Still smiling, Demeika answered: "Grand Chancellor Premier Hu's nephew, Hu Qi. I am sure you knew him before and even played together as kids."

Now looking away from the Empress and gazing upon the lake, Dai Yu asked: "May I ask if this is your suggestion or his suggestion?"

"Whether the suggestion is mine or his, does it make any difference?" Demeika placed her hand over Dai Yu's hand while saying.

Pulling her hand away and now standing up, Dai Yu decided to make her stand clear by saying: "Her Majesty, forgave me for being blunt. But I do no intend to marry anyone else other than Prince Consort."

Also standing up as well, Demeika said: "Though you selected your Prince Consort, both of you have not gone through any wedding ceremony. Why do you have to be so serious?"

"Yes, it is true that we have not gone through any ceremony. That is because of his family issues causing delay, and he needs to attend to them. Therefore, Her Majesty, I hope you can respect my decision considering that marriage is a lifelong commitment. While my brother wants to marry you as Majesty, I am not in the hurry to follow suit." Dai Yu said.

Upon hearing these, Empress Demeika became upset.

Based on the feedback she gathered from her followers, she now saw for herself how headstrong the Highness proved to be. But considering this was only their second meeting, she decided to keep her thoughts and feelings to herself for now.

Returning to her chambers, accompanied by her handmaidens, she found Hu Qi waiting.

"Any good news for me, Her Majesty?" Hu Qi inquired eagerly; his hopes evident in his expression.

Before responding, Demeika turned to her handmaidens and ordered: "You may all leave now."

"As you wish, Her Majesty." They replied with a bow before departing.

With her true feelings of disappointment now evident, Demeika addressed Hu Qi's inquiry. "As I anticipated and learned from my sources, the Highness remains steadfast in her decision. Despite my efforts to recommend you, she remains resolute in her decision to be with her chosen Prince Consort."

"Prince Consort?" Hu Qi echoed; his curiosity piqued. "Who might that be?"

"Li Neng Yuan, son of the late Chief Advisor Li Téng Yuan, and the former West District Commander the Majesty assigned you to take over." Demeika revealed, disclosing the identity of Dai Yu's chosen partner.

At the mention of the name, Hu Qi's memory stirred, his mind racing to place it.

"Li Neng Yuan?" He repeated. "That name sounds familiar."

"Really?" Demeika responded, sharing in his perplexity.

After a moment of contemplation, Hu Qi recalled. "Ah, now I remember! Before leaving Shibeibu, your younger sister, Second Highness Princess Sumeijian, tasked me with delivering a letter to someone called Li Neng Yuan. It seems he may still be alive."

"If he is indeed alive, it will be harder for you in win her affection." Demeika remarked as she settled into her throne.

Unfazed, Hu Qi met her gaze with confidence. "Her Majesty, if that is your concern, you clearly underestimated me. Should he prove to be alive, I will take the necessary measures to put him out of commission. Moreover, if I cannot claim the title of Prince Consort, I fear your reign as Empress Dowager may be short-lived as well."

Stunned by his audacity, Demeika rose from her seat, her voice tinged with indignation. "Are you suggesting I should force the Highness?"

Hu Qi shook his head, his tone measured. "No, Your Majesty, not force. But subtle maneuver."

Though deeply unsettled by his proposition, Demeika could do little but grapple with the implications of Hu Qi's unfulfilled ambitions.

After concluding his meetings with his uncle and Empress Demeika, Hu Qi found himself summoned to his auntie Madam Tang's study room, where she awaited him with purpose in her eyes.

"Hu Qi," she called out, her tone serious as she dismissed her man sent to fetch and bring him here.

"What is it, Aunt?" Hu Qi inquired; his curiosity piqued by her urgency.

"Let me remind you, Hu Qi," She began, cutting straight to the point. "Your upcoming plan cannot afford any mistakes for the consequences of offending the Highness are severe, and even your uncle and I cannot help you."

Though her warning caught him off guard, Hu Qi maintained his confidence. "Rest assured, Aunt. I already planned everything."

Despite her lingering doubts, she nodded in acknowledgment of his assurance.

"Where is the item I need for my plan, Auntie?" Hu Qi queried, his curiosity getting the better of him.

"This is a mixture of Man Rou flowers and other potent herbs and spices." Madam Tang replied, reaching into her robes and producing a small vial containing a red potion. "Simply dissolve the pills in wine, and the effects will be swift."

Grateful, Hu Qi accepted the potion with eager anticipation.

"Thank you, Auntie. But can I be certain of their effectiveness?" he inquired, seeking reassurance.

"Rest assured, Hu Qi," Madam Tang affirmed. "These pills are potent enough to render even the strongest-willed individuals unconscious, be they men, women or beasts."

Upon receiving what he needed for his scheme, Hu Qi headed back to Empress Dowager's Chambers.

Even before being told by his aunt, he knew that Demeika was the only one who could help him having learnt her identity and background from his uncle right after their first meeting in years since his return from Shibeibu Empire. Prior to his last meeting with Demeika, he shared his same intentions with his uncle - Grand Chancellor Premier Hu - who cautioned him the same way his auntie did.

That the Highness - Princess Dai Yu was no ordinary woman and well-trained in martial arts though she had a long way to improve as compared to her brother as Majesty besides her height and strong will.

Problem was when Hu Qi wanted something, he made sure he got it through any means. Having spent years being trained by General Tetsuban and King Monarch Zengis along with other instructors in Shibeibu Institute Of Education And Combat, he was also aware that everything came at a price.

In this case, not just making the Highness his wife but making it difficult for her to turn him down. He had already made a mistake by trespassing Dai Garden Hall without her permission to see her and he was determined not to make another mistake again.

So the way he perceived, Empress Demeika was to be his leverage and bargaining chip to get exactly what he wanted considering her equal statue but slightly higher status.

"Her Majesty, you just need to crush and dissolve those pills in the wine prepared for the Highness." Hu Qi conveyed his aunt's instructions to her even though he added the word crush to ensure Demeika understood exactly what he meant. For he realized - by common sense - that simply dissolving them was not enough for the full effects to take place.

Taking and examining the potion in her hands while being seated before her private chamber table, she turned and asked him with a worried look: "Will this endanger the Highness's life?"

"Don't worry, Her Majesty. Upon drinking the wine, the Highness will fall into deep sleep and by the time she woke up, she had no idea what happened or why." Hu Qi assured her confidently.

"But aren't you deceiving the Highness? And if we are being found out by her and her brother also my husband and our Majesty, what shall we do?"

Hu Qi sat down with her and explained slowly: "Rest assured that we are not deceiving her. If anything happens, I bear full responsibility and so will the Highness. Even if the Majesty found out and blamed us, so what? Eventually, he must agree to our marriage."

"Why do you have to resort to such tactics?"

"Because as my uncle pointed out, the Highness has high ego and been opposing him, my aunt and even her brother as Majesty time and again. But I still like her, and they told me you are the best person to help me."

Empress Demeika kept silent this time despite still feeling uneasy.

"Her Majesty, I am also doing this for you." He added. "We are running out of time. The Highness will arrive any moment. I look forward to your good news."

After he departed, Demeika reluctantly emptied the potion of pills into the wine jug and shook it vigorously to ensure they dissolved completely.

At that moment, she heard Eunuch Lin announcing: "The Highness has arrived!"

Led by Eunuch Lin, Princess Dai Yu and her handmaidens, Er Fen and Yin Er, entered the Empress Dowager's Chambers.

On seeing Empress Demeika and her maids, clad in sombre dark robes, the trio immediately knelt and bowed before her, a show of reverence befitting the occasion.

"Greetings, Your Majesty," they chorused respectfully.

Demeika, acknowledging their homage, motioned for them to rise, signalling an end to the formalities. The princess and her handmaidens complied, standing upright as they awaited further instruction.

In place of the Empress's usual throne, an altar adorned with burning incense and joss sticks now stood prominently before them. This subtle alteration set a solemn tone for the meeting.

Approaching Dai Yu, Demeika asked: "Your Highness, do you know what day is it today?"

Dai Yu nodded solemnly in acknowledgment. "Yes, today marks the anniversary of my parents' passing and First Capital invasion."

"Though our paths differed in the past, I understand the weight of this day." Demeika expressed empathy and sought to bridge the gap between their kingdoms. "Now, with our kingdoms at peace, let us set aside our differences and honour your parents."

They knelt before the altar, offering incense and prayers, a poignant moment of unity amidst the complex tapestry of their shared history. After paying their respects, Demeika and Dai Yu rose to their feet.

With a solemn yet determined expression, Demeika turned to Dai Yu and proposed, "To demonstrate our sincerity, let us join them for a few drinks, ensuring their spirits find peace even in afterlife."

The entourage then made their way to opulent elevator, flanked by their attendants and Eunuch Lin. They descended to an exclusive dining hall and bedroom, typically reserved for Empress Demeika but repurposed on this occasion for Princess Dai Yu. On the grand dining table, an array of sumptuous dishes awaited, including steamed fish, assorted vegetables, bowls of rice with chopsticks and an ornate golden jug alongside two golden cups, poised for the pouring of wine.

Addressing her attendants, Empress Demeika declared, "You may all leave now."

Dai Yu however thought differently by instructing her trusted handmaiden, Yin Er: "You may stay with us."

In apparent displeasure, Demeika added, "Yin Er, you may serve us wine. After that, you leave too. For I have important matters to discuss with your Highness preferably in private."

Acknowledging her orders, Yin Er approached and poured wine into the golden cups before departing as well.

"Come, your Highness. Let us sit." Demeika beckoned Dai Yu to her seat.

As they settled in, Demeika proposed, "For your parents' sake, let us propose a toast and drink."

"Pardon me, Her Majesty," Dai Yu responded. "I have not been feeling well lately due to what happened to my older brother. So instead of wine, can you substitute with tea?"

Demeika respectfully declined the request by stating, "Today is your parents' death anniversary. To replace wine with tea may not be appropriate."

Persisting in her preference, Dai Yu apologized and explained, "I am sorry, Her Majesty. Due to my depression and mourning over my older brother, my body might not be used to consuming alcohol. I still prefer tea as a substitute."

Though maintaining her warm smile, Demeika insisted while offering the cup: "Just drink this cup, and I won't persuade you further."

Despite her initial hesitance, Dai Yu eventually acquiesced, recognizing the hierarchical significance of being in the chambers and dining hall of the Empress Dowager, a figure of higher rank than herself, although still below her other brother as current Majesty.

As the Highness consumed her drink, Demeika tactfully took a small sip, discreetly covering her face with the folds of her long black robes to maintain the appearance of drinking in equal measure, all the while ensuring she appeared to be imbibing as much as the Highness without being noticed.

"Let us eat." She suggested and gracefully served portions of vegetables and delicately sliced fish onto the Highness's rice bowl with chopsticks.

"Thank you, Her Majesty." Dai Yu expressed her gratitude before helping herself.

As Princess Dai Yu prepared to take her first bite, she felt an overwhelming fatigue sweeping over her.

Despite her best efforts, her head and eyelids grew increasingly heavy, and her vision blurred as if veiled by a thick fog.

Setting aside the bowl and chopsticks, she found it increasingly difficult to even maintain an upright sitting posture as the weight of exhaustion pressed down upon her, her longing for sleep intensifying.

"What's wrong, your Highness?" Empress Demeika inquired, her voice laced with worry:

"I... don't... know. I feel... tired." Dai Yu managed to articulate through her growing exhaustion.

Then, everything blacked out.
