🩸 Author's Note: About This Chapter — "The Somnic Compendium"

Before diving deeper into the story, I wanted to give you this chapter — The Somnic Compendium — as a guide through the world of Somnic.

This isn't just lore. It's the foundation of the nightmare itself — the terms, technologies, cults, and dream laws that shape everything Aiden sees and fights. Think of it as a classified field manual left behind by those who entered the dream before you and never woke up.

It'll help you understand how the Somnic Plane works, what the Dreammarks mean, who the Vigil really are, and what lies beyond REM Sleep. You don't need to read it to enjoy the story — but if you do, the world will start making terrifying sense.

"The Compendium isn't written for the living. It's written for those who dream too deep."

1. The Collapse of Dawn

That day, the world stopped waking, and no one seems to remember the exact spark, but only the silence that accompanied it. Rumors have it that it began when sleepless scientists tried to seek a cure for insomnia by syncing the human subconsciousness. Instead, they harmonized fear. The veil between thought and dream tore open, and the nightmares bled through.

But from that ruin was born a new frontier — a place known as the Somnic Plane.

2. The Somnic Plane

This is a shared dream realm that was derived from humanity's collective psyche. It is a place of fluid gravity, emotional light, and memories that breathe. Every sleeper walks its endless corridors each night, whether they wish to or not, and it obeys no physics, only mood.

From the deepest, darkest moods within it, something began to take form — the Wraiths.

3. Wraiths

These are shadows of human emotion that are guilt sculpted into claws, and regret wearing a familiar face. They don't always kill, but sometimes they whisper. Sometimes, they weep. To destroy a Wraith is not to physically combat with it, but to forgive the piece of yourself it reflects.

Those who learned to stand against these creatures became known as Dreamwalkers.

4. Dreamwalkers

They are the Vigil's chosen. Warriors trained to stand and fight inside the nightmare and remember what most forget by dawn. They deploy dream logic like soldiers wielding sanity. Each carries scars on the soul, some silver eyes from REM burns, trembling hands from lives lived and lost across a thousand sleeps.

Their motto echoes in every restless night: "We fight where others sleep."

But the organization that made them was far from pure — The Vigil.

5. The Vigil

Part military, part religion, part asylum. It watches humanity's sleep and is constantly claiming to protect it. Its lucid pods cradle millions, keeping their dreams "controlled." Yet the more they regulate sleep, the less human the world becomes.

Some called them saviors. Others called them tyrants. And from those who refused to obey, another faction arose — the Somnauts.

6. The Somnauts

These are dream zealots who abandoned reality entirely, and they live within the Somnic Plane, adulating it as the truest world. In their eyes, the waking world is the illusion — a cruel prison built of hunger, fear, and deadlines.

They whisper a creed that terrifies The Vigil: "Only in dreams are we real."

But not all dreamers crave divinity; some crave evolution. Thus emerged the Ascendants.

7. The Ascendants

Scholars and philosophers who view dreams as a crucial step in human evolution. They believe the Somnic Plane can be stabilized and merged with reality — that humanity can transcend fear by fusing both worlds.

Their slogan is a promise wrapped in a threat: "Transcend the nightmare. Become the dream."

Yet those who tried to transcend too far often lost something vital — and became the Nulls.

8. The Nulls

These are people who can no longer dream. Pale, empty, unpredictable — walking reminders of what happens when the soul runs out of imagination. They feed on borrowed emotions, entering others' dreams to feel something, anything.

A Null is humanity's mirror when empathy perishes. And beyond their hollow minds lies the true heart of terror — the Abyss.

9. The Abyss (Deep Dream)

This is the final layer. The birthplace of every Wraith and the graveyard of every mind. Here, the subconscious of all sleepers merges into one chaotic sea. It's said that in the Abyss, even God would forget His name.

Legends speak of a root buried within it — the Dream Root, the first nightmare that triggered The Collapse of Dawn.

Sometimes, fragments of this depth spill upward, creating a phenomenon known as Dream Bleed.

10. Dream Bleed / Somnic Bleed

When the wall between dreaming and waking cracks. Reflections twitch before their owners move. Shadows whisper names they shouldn't know. Reality flickers, as if doubting itself. Victims lose the ability to tell whether they're asleep — or if they ever woke at all.

To contain this chaos, The Vigil created their machines — Lucid Pods.

11. Lucid Pods

Metal coffins for controlled dreaming. They stabilize brainwaves and slow time — one hour awake equals days within the Somnic Plane. But with every descent, the mind frays a little more. Dreamwalkers age in thought faster than in flesh.

Many who emerged from the pods began questioning The Vigil's control, sparking a new resistance — the Dream Rebellion.

12. Dream Rebellion

A gathering of ex-Vigil soldiers and broken dreamers who reject both The Vigil and the Somnauts. They believe dreams belong to the soul, not the system.

Their creed is simple yet defiant:

"Sleep should belong to the soul, not the system."

And somewhere, beneath the veil of dawn, they still fight — between fear and freedom, between waking and dreaming — to remember which world is truly real.

Happy reading!
